The events of "Out Of The Darkness" by T. James _are_ canon, is that correct?
That's one of the unofficial points of contact that have occurred.

It is a digression as I am more interested in what changed from Elite to ED in terms of lore (as in what can we throw out as ED has been rebooted it seems like) but what player faction are you referring to ? TIIQ ? I don't know many large groups so I would be interested to learn more.

Hello Michael,
You may think I overreacted in my earlier post, but honestly when I read this thread, heard the excerpt from the TIIQ stream and read Drew's page, that's how I felt.
Anyhow, your replies to the questions from others are missing the point - there's a big rumour going round that you're throwing the baby out with the bathwater, maybe you could tell us what's really going on? What have we all misunderstood up to this point? What elements of literature/gameplay from previous Elite/Frontier games are you erasing from the history books? What's the new "truth"? Why are a teeny tiny part of the ED community (TIIQ) becoming your outlet for information about the backstory? Why do other people you've previously worked closely with on ED storyline now seem to have become disillusioned with that you're doing?
Remember, we don't want to know plot spoilers, we don't want to know future storylines, we only want to know what the "true" backstory is. Maybe you don't want to share with us, maybe you think it won't come across well, yet I'm sure we'd all appreciate some honesty on this subject and we'll react better than if you just avoid the subject. If you don't want to reply on the forums then maybe a livestream would be a better medium to use.
I hope you agree with me and give us a comprehensive reply.
Oh boy I hope it doesn't come to that! All earlier versions of Elite, copies of the Dark Wheel, etc will be mercilessly hunted down and destroyed! (trying to find one of the original releases of the star wars films is like finding hen's teeth). It kind of feels like when George Lucas started to (coughs) "Remaster" Star Wars. We all know Han shot first...
I investigated this and this alternative ending isn't even available to the player, it only exists as "broken" missions in the EXE file. I used quotes around "broken" because in one of the original releases of FFE some of these missions were actually accessible, but in later bug fixed versions they were not. Since bugs were fixed, and these missions were not made available (in fact were fully removeD), I think it's totally reasonable for us to assume that David Braben decided to remove this storyline. To later decide that bugs in a previous game are now established history is quite incredible, and makes me wonder if in ED v10.0 we'll be told that the super-engineered weapons (e.g. pulse-laser/railgun hybrids) we saw in early 2.1 weren't a bug, they were in fact a plot element. There was another ending where the player is instead given a more potent version of the mycoid virus by INRA and delivers this to the Thargoids instead of a vaccine, meaning no Thargoid ship was gifted to humanity and no exchanges of scientific data occurred. The announcement was that this is the actual history of events for Elite: Dangerous.

If it's what it sounds like - wiping out almost his entire lore section - then that's reaching horrific levels for me.Er, I hope this development isn't also related.
The community never assumed anything, players were unable to access the alternative ending.I think one thing you all need to keep in mind is that as far as I understood it, the assumption about which ending of the old FFE game was the "real" ending that really happened was made by the community. FD had never previously commented on which one of those endings was the true lore one.
Therefore this is not a "change of lore" as mentioned in the thread title - it's an answer to the question of which one really happened.
We (the community) assumed that a different ending was the lore one and then based a lot of other stuff around that.

I'm at risk of posting something sounding really quite angry - but they can consider that level of change the point where a lifetime fan starts sidling over towards the "what the hell is going on in FDev" camp
Be that as it might be. Wont argue about semantics here, because thats pretty useless.
My point still stands. It would be way more interesting to work TOGETHER with the thargoids against an even more alien Invasion than to have the same old thargoids as enemies again.
That's one of the unofficial points of contact that have occurred.
I'd like to think Thargoids may be a bit more complex - with their own factions and powers - some tolerant of us, others not...
Z...
That would work for me, also. Anything but the same old boring "they are aliens, shoot to kill" if you know what i mean.
