Newcomer / Intro Much fun, So space, Such beginner, Wow

Played Elite 2 like a junkie in my youth and haven't strayed into pc games in over ten years. So i went and bought a new computer, then a headset, then the oculus and just started playing this yesterday.... All i can say is wow!

I've boosted my unshielded fully laden sidewider into a station by mistake, i've travelled to the wrong stars, clattered around the station letterbox, forgot to buy items for trade bulletins, jumped into dead ends, burnt my eyebrows off forgetting to shift out of the sun, traded at a loss, and i absolutely love it.

After playing dumbed down console games i've totally forgotten how brutal a learning curve PC games have, Learning the hard way is far more rewarding. Quite astonished with how many negative, whiny posts there are about difficulty and basic things. People seem more inclined to stomp there feet on a forum than just go play the game.

Only trouble i seem to be having is finding a good way to use the galaxy map with the oculus. I understand this is new tech and things still need ironed out. Is there a workaround for swapping to monitor quickly? Tried searching a few threads but not found one yet.

Also, is there any beginners guide to what to trade where? I seem to be having trouble finding coffee for instance, even in agricultural planets. Does size of the system matter? I've tried using the trade routes in the map but this isnt foolproof.

Cheers

Freddie

Hi,

Yes a friend of mine usues an occulus and says he has to take it off to use the map. Never used it myself.

Finding a required product can be a bit tricky but usually stuff like coffee is pretty close. Use the galaxy map and deselect everthing but coffee and see where most of it is coming from. Sometimes this can be misleading becaiuse I think it goes on what is actually moving and people may be stopping off on their way somewhere. Look for a system with a couple of coloured lines coming out and try there. If there are multiple stations in the system be aware that not all will be exporting your coffee. You're on the right track looking for what they generally export... combine this with the trading routes on the galaxy map and you'll find it.

A point about the trade routes map is that not every station in the system sells everything that is exported from that system. If you see that Coffee is exported from a particular system, but find the first station you go to does not sell coffee, then undock and go to another station in that same system.

(And that is known in the trade as being Ninja'd :D)

i had a sneaking suspicion that some might sell items while others dont, a bit like some stations having commodities and some not.. I've also noticed the coloured trade routes arnt originating from that system and didnt click that there just moving through there. Good stuff.

Is your friend on here i can PM? looking to set up my monitors so i can change quickly, or even have both running with the game so i can just take the rift off and look that way.

Sorry, he's a friend from work, noticed he had an Elite mug the other day and we had a chat but don't even know his name on here. I've seen others talking about occulus on the forums so you should find someone who can help.

Awesome, I agree you learn and laugh at your mistakes, well most do that want a challenge and not to be spoon fed. That's the most rewarding part when you're stuck and then figure it out.

Have fun CMDR.

Right on Commander! That's what we need more of round here!

Reminds me of the first thing I ever did in beta - which was lose half my starting funds paying a trespassing fine. You see, in the beta you started off outside a station. So naturally the first thing I did was go inside the station looking for goodies to buy. Never occurred to me to ask permission. :) It was about that time that I took a long hard look at the key bindings menu, to figure out what all the buttons were and what they did.

Can't help you with the coffee I'm afraid. If anywhere is going to sell it it'll be an agricultural station, but after that it's just a case of try it and see. The galaxy map should help though - it's not foolproof as you noticed, but it should be a good indicator of where to buy stuff, if not always entirely reliable about where you sell it.

Quick tip in case you hadn't already figured it out - unlike Elite 2, in E: D stations are economy specific. So if you're flying to a mixed economy system, it's worth checking the system map when you get there to make sure you're heading to the correct station.

So glad you are enjoying ED. You make a good point about people who have been weaned on console games... and yeah, even some of the modern PC games come to think of it. Now, I'm not trying to be rude to any of those people if you happen to be reading this but it is an interesting thing to watch. First of all they all 'where's the xxxxx?', 'it should have xxxxx', 'this game will fail because xxxxx'. After a while though, these same people suddenly 'get' it. Understanding of what ED is about and what the devs are trying to do dawns like a golden sunrise. It really is a pleasure to watch. Of course, there are always those who just won't ever 'get' it and they fall by the wayside and go back to CoD or WoW or some other chewing gum for the brain... which is kinda sad.

Oy - watch it Commander. I spent many good years playing WoW. :)

It's an interesting comparison though. Over the years WoW has focused more and more on speeding players through to end game content as quickly as possible. Given that six million plus players are still forking over a monthly subscription, I guess that was a good plan. However it does mean that when the endgame lost its lustre for me, I was left with a rather hollow shell of a game. Result - one cancelled subscription.

Not bitter - I had a lot of fun playing and made some good real-life friends in the process. But sometimes it really is the journey that counts and not the destination. Which might be why I'm enjoying E: D quite as much.

There are two things ive noticed about the way games have gone in the last few years that bother me.

I think its defiantly a trend within games now to dumb it down for the bigger audience. Like films, if you make it more accessible (whens the last time you saw an 18 rated film?) you'll get more bums on seats, Profit. The problem being is you cant get by on babys milk when you've gotten used to having steak.
Secondly, it doesnt matter if said game isnt even finished and gimped on release day. The hype surrounding it is enough to sell it. Elite by next gen standards works straight off the bat with very little drop outs, Same cant be said for any major console release ive played last year.

Winge aside, it's great to see this kickstarter model working and evolving. Hopefully see more being made (Tie fighter remake please!).

On another note ive just upgraded to a Cobra and now baffled by the mass effect on upgrading my jump drives and where to higher grade ones. Another learning side mission unlocked.
