Proposal Discussion Multi Monitors/Galaxy & System Map? Custom resolution

Wondered if anyone had thoughts on enabling a second monitor for Galaxy & System map? Now the maps have been updated I’ve been looking at a bit in super cruise to kill a bit of time, but over shot a few destinations in the process, lol

Would this be possible? I use it for Xplane sometimes as have a second smaller monitor i used for gauges etc before getting track IR. The ED pops up screens are great, but may be good for module damage in Dog fighting situ’s too?

Just a thought... Loving Beta 2!

P.S XPlane 10 also allows completely custom resolution set up to stretch view over two monitors for those of us without space or budget for 3, again an option worth including?

Personally, I'd advocate for an in-cockpit display for galaxy and system maps, rather than taking you out of the flying screen altogether, like the two side-panels currently are.

It could work pretty well with a multi-monitor display with the second monitor actually displaying the side of your cockpit with the galaxy map, rather than a free-floating window, and it would also make it a little more congruous for us Oculus users ^^

I think the majority of players that play Elite with additional monitors are people like me that play with 3, so having this as a feature for a second screen really alienates those players.

Instead (or as well as), this would be better suited as a tablet app (that is also added to the windows store). The galaxy map is precisely the sort of thing you'd want to use touch control for as well.

I almost always have my surface pro 2 sitting on my desk while playing elite, so being able to use it as if it was the tablet sitting on the pilot chair in-game (which presumably is what you're looking it when viewing the map anyway) would be great.

Being able to use it to check on things like where to buy components and ships would also be very useful.

There's a mobile app coming out, isn't there? It seems to be more focussed on giving market data or something, though. Your idea might tie in well to that, and apps that interact with the game seem to be all the rage these days. Personally, I think it would be cool to be able to have a tablet or something be used as the two side panel menus.

If they implement the second Screen Map or a "incockpit" map i would like to have a System Map too b.c. the current System view is not that great (on a side node: 90% of the Menus need alot of overhauling :/ )

There is an app coming, not sure if they've actually said what it is though, but at the very least having the galaxy map on it seems like an obvious thing to do.

If they can then further expand that so that the map syncs with the game server to show your current position, and also has the local system map integrated, would be brilliant.

That'd probably be easier than going down the whole second screen thing, and would probably satisfy more people.

Would be fantastic to have both left and right UI panels as well as system maps running on touchscreen monitors or tablets.
Would allow for great cockpit builder support.

I'd love a separate galaxy map. preferably a networked app for windows that lets you access the map without going through the ship menus and stays available when flying.

I have a 3200 x 1900 15" touchscreen notebook it would look fantastic on, and would make the game so much easier.

Trade routes and galaxy map at my side to play with during supercruise so I can plan things, or check the market and map side by side.

I have a dual monitor setup - I am sure a lot of folks do - I am slightly envious of those folks with 3 screens to get a super wide view.

I would love to have the galaxy / system map / trading screens on the second screen.

I would also love to link to my tablet, which is a Windows 8.1 Tablet, so ideally using a cross platform technology (either Web Technology or something like XBox SmartGlass) so all tablets are covered (Win/iOS/Android)

I understand about the whole immersion thing, but those three screens today are not very immersive to begin with! So, having them bolton on the side breaks nothing. :D

Slim

My vote = Dont be silly, this is a must have, not even a question.

Separate monitor would obviously be nice for those that have them.
It would be nice if the galaxy map came up in a holographic window though, that partially obscured the screen. Maybe you could drag it around and put it somewhere so you can see it with a twist of your head.
I think this would fit better with the game. You often look at a map while driving - you rarely cover the whole windscreen with it!

Great idea. I'd like the same and something similar for the News feed too.

If you look at the pilot chairs in all of the cockpits in Elite there is a tablet sitting just above your knees. I think this is what you're actually looking at when looking at the map, so while some kind of holographic map would be handy I think it would detract from what the devs are trying to portray.

I have 3 screens, and I have to disagree! The additional screens give you peripheral vision, something you don't even get with a VR headset, which (when in a dark room at least) actually makes you feel more like you're in the cockpit than just staring at one screen.

However, as I mention above, I get the impression that when looking at the galaxy and system maps you're actually looking at the tablet bolted to your pilot's chair. So adding that as an app for actual real-world tablets that you can have sitting on your lap (or whatever) will improve immersion even further.

As someone else here said, it especially improves immersion for those going to some length to build their own cockpit setups.

Tablets/app

Thanks for all the posts, like the tablet app idea, however i have a kindle fire (i know! What was i thinking) and doubt that would be complatable for a long time.

I have 2 27" monitors now and will be getting a new graphic card and additional monitor for Christmas (for Elite). More is better. Give me a map I can keep on screen and an app when I dont want it on screen ..
