Multiple Accounts

Dear Frontier

Please can yo find a way to set up multiple accounts and be able to access them from one of the main menus as it would be nice to have another commander without the need to install more than one user profile on my machine and more than one profile on steam
If anybody else thinks this is a good idea please bump.
with thanks

Someone will find an objection, but not me. I think one complaint you might see about this is that some people have already paid for one or more additional copies, and giving everyone however many free CMDR slots would somehow invalidate their purchase. Not unlike the whines we're seeing from the Horizons fold-down right now.

I dont feel this as some totaly intented gameplay. Maybe not forbidden , but not integrated either.

Imo it's not a bad idea , but there's just a list of 30948198 better things to do/fix in the game before.

No my friends I am just looking for a way to save loading multiple copies of the game and instead just purchasing the game keys to fill extra paid slots rather than to download ELITE more than once onto my poor overworked bedraggled hard drive.

You can use a "Hard link" in windows to circumvent having to have two installations.
Then you can just have two launcher installs (much smaller than.. the entire game!), which run off the same files.

Just put a "hard link" to your "products" folder into the second launcher installation.

There's likely an even more streamlined way of making it so you don't even need two launcher installs.

I don't think OP is talking about free extra commander slots, just an easier way to access the the extra ones already purchased.

No need to install multiple user accounts on your machine or download multiple copies of ED. Sure, that works, and is the easiest option to keep the accounts separate, but it's not the only option.

In Steam, you can set up multiple Steam accounts and switch between them, but (AFAIK) only need to install one physical copy of the game on your PC. Haven't tried this myself, as I don't have multiple Steam copies.
If you bought the game from FD directly, you will need multiple email-addresses (or aliases for your address), one for each account, but that's it. If you want to avoid having to log out and into the Launcher every time you want to switch accounts, you can set up multiple copies of the Launcher (one per CMDR) and just use the Lancher copy (or, in my case, the corresponding desktop shortcuts) for the CMDR you want to play at the time. All Launcher copies on one Windows user account will use the same copy of the game (and, at least as important, the same bindings file...).

What on earth are you talking about? I have three accounts. One launcher, one copy of the game installed on one machine. When i login, all i have to do is have a separate email address and password for each account, off i go. This way, i can go exploring by using one account, if i want to go after Thargoids, i load up my second account with a unique email and password, my third account is my trading account, again accessed by a separate email and password. You don't need to download a stand alone version of the game for each account you want to use

There are four ED accounts on my PC. Two of them (my main, and my son's account) share the same install, we just have different launchers. So when I upgrade my account, his is upgraded too.

The other two are my alts, with separate installs. But I only did that so that I can run them simultaneously (both of my "assistants" were with me on the bridge of my Beluga at Sag A* and Beagle Point, via multicrew).

If you don't need to run accounts simultaneously, one install and multiple launchers should work fine, if you're using Frontier-bought accounts, or old Steam accounts (I gather newer ones are more problematic).

I'm confused, I have two accounts... I just press logout on one at the launcher, then log in with the other username and password...couldn't be simpler...1 steam account, 1 game install.

If you buy more than one copy through steam you need a steam account for each copy of elite dangerous. This is really annoying. I can log into each account I bought through steam years back but recently they have changed things, you now need a seperate steam account for each commander you have. Thee cannot now be registered on the stand laone launcher, they have to be logged in through each seperate steam account. Thats quite irritating. Put on top of that I also have oculus, a .NET problem whereby I have to log in as admin, the right hand column of the start page missing.....Elite Dangerous is the only game I have that has these multiple problems. Its nonetheless still what I play mostly! #
A standard launcher for all Elite Dangerous accounts would be superb, type in your commanders log in, verify if necessary and off you go.

FD could introduce multiple characters without upsetting those of us already bought Alt Accounts - we would obviously have multiple characters times two!

I already have four accounts and one is a lifetime pass. If Frontier was to suddently allow multiple accounts on one account, you would (1) have to be able to play one multiple at once and (2) for me they would all have to be upgraded to lifetime pass. I highly doubt Frontier will every open this can of worms!
