Horizons My first day of playing Horizons-WOW!!!!!

Yeah, 'different strokes'. For me and many (many more folks) this game is just what we've always wanted. -The feel of space, the planets/landing and (sorry 'Chippy P', game play), I rate from good to fantastic, in no particular order.

Being as you brought me into it directly -- I'll reply.

Yes, I think the space sim portion of Horizon's is well done. I think the rover physics is well-done. The graphics is well done. But I bought E L I T E: Dangerous and expected some story and eventful missions that doesn't become become repetitive after 15 minutes. Then I bought Elite Dangerous: Horizons hoping that the new missions would have given some more story to the game, come creativity -- instead I hear the drones telling me to use MY imagination >_>, how unique. What we have is a larger, prettier Kerbal game with a mario-kart minigame.

I'm sorry, but my definition of fun isn't repeating the same thing over and over again with no risk and some high reward like I did something amazing. Feeling a sense of achievement when I do something in a game is a must for fun and killing the same players (pirates) over and over and over again for a 200cr and 2,000 cr bounty here and there -- is also repetitive and I refuse to hunt newbies.

Because you are clearly out of touch with reality. FDev doesn't even have enough money to give us a complete expansion after we all paid a AAA price.

Whereas CIG, with its $100 million, had enough money to give us a fully featured AAA game, like, yesterday. :p

You know, I don't think you know how this 'money --> game' relationship works.

That first line was actually pretty funny -- you had me laughing LOL...

The second line -- you guessed, I have an issue with. You see, you're ignoring some key things here. Its not like FD is new at this in fact I invite you to compare the two portfolios:

https://www.cloudimperiumgames.com/ 1 game... Star Citizen

http://frontier.co.uk/games/ 13 games, not including older titles like Elite

Indeed I know how money --> game relationships work -- as in Frontier should have had enough funding and time to deliver a completed 1.x game when it released following with bug fixes and minor updates, and enough funding and TIME to deliver a completed expansion over the course of a year, in tandem with pushing fixes for 1.x.

The fact they did not, the fact they had to get backing (and did not use the traditional investors and loans with the games currently in their portfolio), indicates to me as a small business owner there is something bad going on under the hood at FDev (its like a mechanic hearing your car making a knocking noise when it idles in park). While I hope they work it out and are very successful, it still gives me some pause and concern about the direction of ED and the handling of how Horizons was rolled out, especially being rushed out in its incomplete state to money-grab in the holiday shopping frenzies. I'm just hoping ED isn't being used as a cash-cow for their other titles.

Yes, you can get resources on the ground. You can boost your FSD range, repair the canopy, refill amunition and do other neat things.

Driving around with the SRV generates exploration progress and increases with distance from inhabited space. I am an explorer as well and i returned for the beta - i am now two days out again in my overhauled Asp Explorer.
So far i can tell, that planetary landing add an incredible amount of space feeling to the game. The vistas are mind blowing, ground exploration is just breathtaking and the ability to get something useful back up into the ship made exploration much more rewarding. And believe me, being out there in an SRV is more than just flying over the landscape - if you like exploring, you will love driving in an SRV.
Usually i traveled around 500 lightyears an hour, less when i found nice systems. Now with horizons, i am slowed down a lot... simply cannot withstand to land and take a tour...

I say, heat up your FSD and floor the pedal to get home, refit and head back out. Flying is now only half the exploration.

OK cheers....next question can I land on planets now without getting Horizons?

I agree that this game is a mirror to the personality of a player. If someone is boring or grindy then the game will be boring and grindy.

No. No. No.

Yes Horizons has added a lot to the game. I was fearing another Frontier when we started to be able to land on planets. But it seems FD is combining the best of the previous games in the series into ED. There's a lot of things to be ironed out, but that's because there's a lot under the hood of this game. While I spent the weekend grinding through killing 47 pirates for a rather well-paying mission, I had fun observing the shenanigans of the NPCs, from snooty Deadly/Elite Cobra pirates to big-headed Novice Anaconda pilots, smugglers that just wanted to be left alone and other pirates whose last thoughts were to be unimpressed by my Cobra Mk IV. Next I'll go back to planetary missions, see what I can kit the Cobra out to do for that, as well as spend likely too much time marvelling at the landscapes, the sunrises, the earthlight in some areas, and all those little details added.

I don't recall having this much fun with a game in decades.

:D S

Seriously, I thought playing Elite Dangerous this time last year was a massive buzz-but that was *nothing* compared to trying out planetary landings in Horizons. It was a very steep learning curve, so the first landing I tried was at a Space Port. Then I went to Xi Ursae Major to try a free landing-but didn't realise you needed to have your landing gear down before you'd get the notification that you'd found a safe place to land (also learned that I still haven't figured out how to find PoI's-but I look forward to working it out). The views on parts of the moon still made the trip to the surface worthwhile. The pics don't do it justice, but there was this gorgeous moment where I crested a rise in the terrain, then just over the crest was a really deep chasm, almost pitch dark due to the lack of any ambient light.

So then I nicked off towards Sirius, & did a stop-over on an Icy Moon in Procyon. I learned the hard way just how difficult the SRV is to control when you're on an ice world in less than 0.2G. Later I found out that I had no clue how to find my landing pad in the SRV, so tore off into the wilderness, just so I could call my Vulture to me! Then I next headed over to Lucifer, & the difference in handling between a High Metal Content world-with 0.25G-& the Icy world I just visited previously was *very* noticeable. I left my ship parked there, & plan to go back soon to go looking for PoI's in my SRV!

Seriously, I don't care what the nay-sayers say, this game is utterly *amazing* & *immersive* (even with below average Frame-Rate), & I genuinely think it is only as "shallow" or as "grindy" or as "boring" as you make it.

My only complaint is that I have *definitely* lost Frame Rate in the transition from Elite: Dangerous to Horizons (even in space). It hasn't made the game unplayable by any means, but I sincerely hope that they do further graphics optimization over the next 2-4 weeks!

Glad your enjoying the game...something that might help your frame rate without hurting the looks to bad ...lower your shadows...and reduce lighting effects a bit...should bump your FR a bit...also latest 64 bit drivers if you haven't already done that...the latest from Nvidia did manage a 5 frame boost from what I already had...and I was doing very well to start...I'm not running the gtx980 but rather the gtx960 and the game auto detected ultra settings...been to hazrez sites and other places and haven't bogged down. So if the other options aren't your gig and haven't already try a 64 bit driver update if they have one.
Fly safe!!

Peace and Prosperity by any means!!!:)
