Newcomer / Intro My first Eagle

So i'm wondering about this eagle i get with the pre-order, if i take off and crash straight into the nearest pylon will have enough starters cash to keep the bonus ship or will I be looking at a brand new sidewinder?

Also is there any cheap basic equipment i should fit before my first flight, or things i should aim to get with my first couple of credits (assuming i plan to nub around shooting at NPCs and exploring the local area)

will the eagle be a good ship to try out a bit of smuggling, or should I aim for a transport/multirole ship for that kinda thing

This is totally a personal opinion, but you could sell your Freagle and get 40K cash. Trick out your sidewinder for a bit of trading or bulletin board missions, and before you know it you'll be in a Hauler, Viper and eventually a Cobra. :)

Selling it is probably a better option then crashing on take off and losing it, though hopefully starting cash will cover that.

During one of the test phases, we only got 100 CR to start with. A station fine would wipe that out and put you in debt. :)

Now you should start with 1000 CR. Spend some time in the Sidey, it's not a bad ship, cheap to upgrade, and you basically have nothing to lose. Do bulletin board missions, that's the best starting point. A little bit of haulage, a little bit of shooting stuff, very little risk with that ship.

If you feel confident, keep the Eagle, go bounty hunting, make money, upgrade Eagle, make money faster, upgrade, repeat.

That's what I did :)

Hi
Go out and explore the other system around you to find valuable info and or good profit item to trade from station to station.

It seems like so many people are talking about selling off their Eagle. Is the ship really that bad?

It's a decent light fighter if upgraded, however you will have a stock ship with 1000 CR in the bank. Stock ships suck, they really do. The recommendation to sell it is because you get 40K for it, so you can upgrade your Sidey and go shoot stuff/haul with little risk. Buy the Eagle later if you wish when you have the money to upgrade it and/or lose it.

It's actually quite a nice ship. The 40k you get from selling it can give you a decent boost up, but if you can make money with your Sidewinder as-is, you might hang on to it to enjoy later.

For Eagle upgrades, I'd put in a D-class power plant (cheap and much lighter than the stock E-class, plus it gives you a little power boost), the best power distribution system you can get (IIRC, it takes a size 2, so an A2 will run you about 56k), and swap out one of the pulse lasers for a pair of gimballed multicannons. You're probably looking at 80-90k for the upgrades, but it makes the Eagle into a vicious little knife fighter. And realistically, once you get an income coming in with your Sidewinder, it won't take you long to make that.

Are ship sales automatic and instant, and prices fixed? As in Select ship > click Sell > fixed amount of credits in account and available to use.
Or is there any sort of supply and demand market forces at play? Will the resale value of the Eagle plummet within minutes of the game going live because thousands of us newcomers are flooding the market with our redundant Eagles?

I am thinking of holding onto the eagle, it looks pretty cool, and going off the stats on the wiki it looks like a slightly better ship, having more shields and apparently more agility over the ship i trained in (demo's sidewinder) i'm rather enthusiastic about it.

Pricing for ships and equipment is fixed.

It is a good starting ship if you are more interested in combat.
The Eagle the same cargo capacity as the Sidewinder, but i.i.r.c. you start with 2 tonnes and need to upgrade if you want the 4 like the Sidewinder.
So if you're more interested in trading and transporting selling is the best option.
This also makes piracy a lesser option.

For bounty hunting it is a great starting ship.
I used it for a long time and enjoyed it manoeuvrability.

(Keep the Pulse Lasers as long as you can, as they are decent weapons.)

Others have answered the question about the ship, but in terms of equipment, I'd suggest investing in a fuel scoop when you can. The most basic (slowest) ones are fairly cheap but can save your life on occasion. It will also save you time and money refuelling - especially if you're doing something like exploring that doesn't necessarily take you near stations. Also, if you scoop in an uninhabited system you've much less chance of being interdicted than when approaching a station.

They do take up an interior compartment, so if you're trading to begin with you may not want to fit one to your sidey, but once you get a bit more adventurous, or get a bigger ship, I'd definitely recommend for explorers, rare goods traders and maybe miners and bounty hunters too.

Sell Eagle, buy superconductors, fly into station.
cry.
Pray for wipe before release.
cry.

Pick yourself up and pimp your sidey. I didn't want an eagle anyway :)

Get used to flying around and using the side thrusters in the starting Sidewinder before taking on the Eagle. It's much more responsive and there's a whole thread (https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=75094&highlight=freagle) from the beta testers about how they found it surprisingly good at dog fighting (some good optimisations in that thread too - gist of which is laser on top, twin multi cannons under and managing power priorities/upgrading powerplant/distributor).
And just to recap on how to find the Mercenary Free Eagle...
The Galaxy Map has an icon of a sidewinder (ie a ship) at star systems where you have stored ships.
Also when in station and looking at ships to buy, it will show up as one of your stored ships (easier to see the star system name).
The system map for the star system will also have a ship icon next to the station with your stored ship.
Enjoy whichever way you go with the Merc Eagle!

I've kept the eagle so far, upgraded a bunch of the subsystems on it, got rid of the basic scanner and cargo bay, now i've got a kill warrent scanner and interdictor, been having a blast bounty hunting and dodging the cops, haven't spotted a player with a bounty yet, but i'm sure plenty have spotted me :D
