After searching space for two days, it finally happened - a Threat Level 4 Distress Call and a showdown with a few waves of pirate ships and a Farragut class capital ship.
The fight was good, a bit more intense than I expected, but good. The music was definitely top-notch, and seeing that monster limp out with its tail between its legs was satisfying. Payout could be a little better, but it is what it is.
Then I noticed something - the other Farragut there, the defender in this situation, has a whole lot more subsystems than the aggressor. Drives, reactors, all kind of things beyond just the guns and heat relays. And this makes me think, we should be able to do a whole lot more with these "enemy" capital ships than just pop their heat relays like popcorn and watch them run.
Perhaps take out their drives first, then their weapons, heat relays, reactors and shut them down completely, so they can't simply jump out, and allow them to be "reclaimed" for bigger bonuses, perhaps major navy rank gains... something to make them really worth tracking down and taking on. But that's sort of an Elite: Thing - a nice framework to build on, sometime Soon™.
