Newcomer / Intro My Return to ED ......

@Wombat....

From what I have read, you seem to just want to explore the galaxy to see what's out there.

You can actually explore in any ship, even the starter Sidewinder. That's what I did to earn money at first.
You don't even need to really do anything to the ship, just fly it as it is.

There is lots of good advice on this thread but the main thing to remember when exploring is to take a fuel scoop and AFMU with you.

One of the best places to explore in a ship with limited jump range is the core because all the stars are so densely packed. You can get to the core in a Sidewinder but it may be quicker to get a lift in a Fleet Carrier.

However, my point is regarding the time taken in making jumps.
ie. using your new figures and my previous arrangements: I'm sitting at my computer for 1 hour making sixty 34ly jumps (incl. scoops) to complete a 1700ly journey.
Is that correct?
How long something like this takes depends on if you want to 'stop to smell the roses' along the way.
Yes, you can cover a long distance in a short time by jumping, scooping, jumping, scooping.......... but if you want to explore each system you find, then it will obviously take longer.

Maybe instead of getting bogged down in technical stuff, just take your ship out for a spin. Select a system on the galaxy map that you like the look of, plot a course and have fun exploring. It's not difficult at all.

I'm not sure if you know this yet - the number 1 most important thing to do playing Elite. Always have at least 5% the value of the ship including it's modules you are flying in the bank. If the ship is destroyed, you pay that 5% and get the ship back in the nearest space station or fleet carrier. If you don't have that 5% in the bank, you lose the ship and you're back in a sidewinder. Potentially heartbreaking.
I used to keep about 20% value of my most expensive ship cost held in reserve.

I know someone taking a fleet carrier to near the core early October. It will be there for about 6 months before returning to the bubble. The high star density certainly does mean more interesting things to see for less distance travelled. An off the shelf unengineered DBX, ASP X or Phantom would be ideal to dock on the carrier, get off when it reaches the core, explore and return 6 months later. Big jump ranges not important for this - fuel scoop essential.
The trip is to hunt for Earth Like World's which are worth around a million credits each when you sell the map data, which you can do on the carrier although you lose 25% paying commission compared to selling at a space station.
If it's of interest I'll share the forum post link about it. I will fly out from Colonia to join the hunt for at least a few weeks.
The Fleet Carrier will take a while to reach the core as they jump once every 20 minutes and jump a maximum of 500ly - so they are not very fast. But they can take lots of ships with them plus all the repair, refuel, restock services you need. This carrier also has a shipyard where you can buy new ships and modules. So you could even upgrade from DBX, to ASPX to Phantom while out there using the map data sales money.

I just wish they would slow down! Be more economical with the words they use. Focus better on what they are trying to show and say.
But that comes with my two years teacher training and 15 - 20 years teaching experience. ;)
They are skills you have to develop, practice, and refine.
Just wish I could see more of it here in the video clips.

Yes, I understand that. But I'd rather have a better ship, and to obtain that, I will need to earn credit so as to buy it. All that requires me to gain other basic skills and at the moment all I can do is safely take off and land .......... full stop!. ;)

(y) Duly noted.

I would hope to get there in my Hauler, Fleet Carrier assisted, or otherwise.

Well, I hope to explore each location thoroughly. I'll be in no hurry and more than happy to stop and 'smell the roses' :D

That sounds very attractive and should suit my preferred mode of play perfectly.
Thanks for the advice. (y)

What about using an off-the-shelf Hauler?

Thanks, but can this be done in Solo Mode, one of my personal gaming conditions, previously mentioned?

Sounds attractive, although I had not planned on exploring Sol so early in my piloting experiences.

Yes you can do this in an off the shelf Hauler. Pop back to the carrier everyone once in a while, sell the data, buy the next ship up the ladder and on you go. On this trip you would fly to the next star in your area that will be within 1 to 3 light years jump away and explore and scan again - economy mode jumping. The amount of fuel needed to make a jump rises exponentially up to the max jump range. So these short jumps use a tiny amount of fuel meaning you don't need to fuel scoop very often - so overheating Hauler while it scoops is not even an issue. Just make sure you don't miss the ride home after 6 months.
The guy running the trip has earned an incredible 63 billion in exploration data sales, and chooses to use a DBX for exploration.
I'll post the link later.
Yes you can do this on solo mode, but on this trip you will not meet anyone probably at all, and not aggressive if you do. Explorers don't shoot each other and don't have guns on there ship as a rule.

You know, put the detailed surface scanner costing 250,000 credits and a fuel scoop onto a sidewinder, and you could start the ELW hunt with that.
But I'd get into a Hauler with a 2A FSD and a 2C fuel scoop plus the detailed surface scanner as a better starting point.

And lastly, the idea of flying to the core in a Hauler that gets hot scooping.... 🥺
It does not take very long to get the credits for a good specification DBX doing road to riches at approx 1 million per stop. About 16 million for a DBX with the right outfitting.

The galactic core Earth Like World hunt thread:

Departure estimated for first week October for 6 months.
Departs from here:

USS Saratoga is in orbit around Skardee 1 (if anyone wants to start loading anything or do final fitting out for heat resistance) Right now I'm looking at a departure date during the first week of October....

Just so I've got this right: you are talking about Deserted-crib3 suggestion I presume? ie. the one using the carrier to get there. However, I'll be piloting a Hauler, not a DBX.
I'll post the link later.
Sorry? What's this link you are going to post?

So ......again ...... just to get this right: you're suggesting Open Mode rather than Solo Mode?
Maybe that means you can come and visit me? 😮

Just to the rest of you who maybe still following this thread: Para, Gully, Chris, Sheronimo, mic, Dragsham, Krieger, Achtung, Faded, Rabbit, Codger, etc.
I haven't forgotten you or given up on you!
It's just that I now have a plan of action; something to focus on. ie. a ship or ships to buy, and a place to visit.
Somebody I can yell and scream at if it, and it will, go wrong. ;)
I still want input from others. I'm unlikely to change direction, but you never know.
........... just thought I had to say this ........ this is a public thread (deliberately so) and although currently dominated by a minimum number of major contributors, I have no wish for it to remain so.
And if I'm going to continue to make a fool of myself, I'm quite happy to do it publically. :D

As crib3 suggested I am saying this is an opportunity to ride on a Fleet Carrier to the to center of the galaxy so you do not have to fly there yourself. If you want to do this in a Hauler - go for it. You can swap between Solo mode and Open mode whenever you like. In an open mode play session I can come and visit you. You can show me something(s) you've discovered. I was planning on flying 12,000ly from Colonia to join this expedition anyway, but meeting up with you would be an added incentive 😉
The tricky bit is my online play sessions tend to be unplanned and random, but I managed to get online without someone else once who was helping me to figure out core mining.

The link I am talking about is posted earlier to the forum thread about "Expedition with a twist" and I shared the Fleet Carrier name and location above.
Someone else quite new was planning to go in a Cobra.

Also if your Hauler got destroyed while out in the galactic centre, I'm fairly sure you pay the "insurance" re-buy cost and start back at the Fleet Carrier.
I did a re-buy on an Alliance Chieftan when trying to fight too many Thargoid (alien) scout ships at once 😁 and found myself on a nearby Fleet Carrier after re-buy.
