Newcomer / Intro My Return to ED ......

Yes, "hear" makes so much more sense.
And thanks for the Econ/Fast advice. I knew I'd seen it somewhere. ;)

Wombat1940: Seriously though, I hope somebody does know ........ could be very useful.

Deserted-crib3: No it's not lol.

I don't agree. Just look at these figures:

Look at the Galaxy Map Quain provided in Post #1089. That reference you can just see, 9530 : ??24 : 19790. Where the bloody hell is that ? 😲
I'm at 90 : 40 : 0
SOL is 0 : 0 : 0

All I do know is that you're light years away from me, and that's a gross understatement ! :ROFLMAO:
And I think that's useful to know. In fact, I can pinpoint exactly where we both are .....
(I need to study more spansh.co.uk.)
I am around 22,000ly away from the bubble in the Colonia region. My home base in this area is in the station Colonia Dream in the Ratraii system. Everything is so close together here it does not matter much where you base yourself. I picked Colonia Dream because it is very close to the star so only a short supercruise to get to home base.

If you want to know where he is, just type in the name of the system he is in (or one of the nearby ones on the image he provided).

You really don't need the grid numbers to find someone, just the system name.

Honestly, those grid numbers play no part in the game at all.

Thanks for that. Looked up both in EDDB and found them. I'm trying to plot a course on my Galaxy Map but so far no good. Thought I'd pop over for a beer ....... ;)

To the best of my knowledge, the record for bubble to Colonia using neutron stars for boost as much as possible is 1 hour 29 minutes. It was done in an Anaconda stripped down to the absolute minimum with everything engineered to the maximum plus the essential Guardian FSD booster. I would estimate it had an unladen jump range of over 70ly, possibly a bit over 75ly.
In Elite this is the tipple of choice:
Lave is one of the old worlds from the original 1984/1985 game :)
I'll be back in the bubble at some point in the coming months. I still have more things I want to do here and in the centre of the galaxy that is "only" 11Kly from Colonia.

Do you have Systems Map you can post for Ratraii ? Thanks.
I would recommend coming to Colonia sometime later in your time with ED - I'd advise after you have settled on your exploration ship and put an Engineered FSD V1 and Guardian FSD booster in it. Use EDSM.net to find places to visit on the way. I'll be doing that Colonia back to the bubble at some point.

Hmmm...... now this is where I disagree.
Yes, it may be too soon for a newbie to go to Colonia, but you certainly don't need an engineered fsd or any Guardian tech to get you there.

I have been to Colonia and back in my python and it only has a jump range of 26ly's and it doesn't have any alien tech in it.

If you want to get to Colonia (or anywhere else) fairly quickly, then sure, get these things to boost your jump range, but if like me, you are not in a rush to get everywhere, then you can certainly get to Colonia with a minimal jump range.

How funny ...... just talking to my mate in the UK ( one of his sons married one of my daughters), we go to Bali together. He's only 83, so you can imaging what goes on in Bali when we are together. We were just talking about drinking Vodka. Ha ! And what it is made from. And then we got round to our perennial, Gin and Tonic. Gin is bloody cheap in Bali: about AUD12 (abt 7 pounds to you "poms'). And we used to drink a bit. Well ........ more than a bit ........ arrrr ......... memories ....... memories.

Thanks for the screenshot. I see what you mean by "crowded". No, not in any rush. But one day ....... ;)

If it is an impression of star density in the area you were after, I think this covers most of the area. Colonia to Diggidiggi where there are loads of tourist passengers missions I'm running in the Orca is only 25.72ly apart.

Is COLONIA just another System ?
It's not so much that Ratraii is crowded, it's more that part of the Galaxy ! 😲

As The Pilot on youtube says in his Dolphin review, the galaxy is mostly empty, and kinda boring (which is why he likes longer distance passenger missions to guide him to interesting places). I like to have a list of places of interest from EDSM.net to be way points on my journey to somewhere. That way I know I will see something good, and I like to have a decent jump range to get to each way point in a reasonable time. It does mean my route to somewhere is very indirect and scenic. I'll stop and look at anything interesting I stumble on, on the way. And sure, I will be jumping right over things I might have enjoyed seeing. But with 400 billion star systems, the odds are for finding rocks, ice and some gas giants much like the last 50-100 systems I jumped into.
I am curious as to how people find something satisfying to see often enough without any kind of guidance.

Colonia is a name for a system, and the area often get's referred to as Colonia, or the Colonia region. This part of the galaxy is fairly crowded which means you don't have to jump far to get around. If you want to see really crowded, head to the centre of the galaxy around Sagittarius A* one day. You cannot go more than a couple of light years without tripping over another star. Economy route jumping would be 1 to 2 light year jumps for 1000s of light years. Plotting a route takes a while - so many stars to consider in the calculation.

Nice post. (y)
Except, I don't understand what you mean in the last sentence ? 🤔

Stupid question, but how realistic is all this in our Galaxy, the Milky Way ? Or is it just something "invented" by the people at ED for the sake of making the game interesting. ?

If I just travel without any knowledge of where to find an interesting sight, I'm going to see a lot of star systems that look just like the last 10 - 100 systems I jumped into. I start to lose interest after a while.
EDSM helps me to find places like Tiller Trove:
DhEjVLw.jpg

The picture does not do justice to the bleak but beautiful atmosphere. EDSM has a record of 40 ships ever coming here, and none in the last 7 days. It is somewhere between Sagittarius A* and Colonia way up as high above the galactic plane as you can get in that area. It is not on the route to anywhere and it is impossible to reach without a jump range I am guessing somewhere in excess of 50 to 60 light years. This type of sight is what I go exploring for, and will travel dozens of jumps out of my way to get to if I must.
Each to their own, but wandering without some idea of seeing something good is something I will do, but only for limited periods of time.

The name Colonia was chosen by ED players. The system had a scientific looking name originally, and I believe at least the nebula in this area is real. As always, scientifically accurate as much as is practical with some fiction mixed in to make for good game play.
