My understanding is that the old trd files is same as journal? Is this true? If so Is it possible to convert them to journals?

TRD files? The only useful output from ED before journals was the netlogs. found in the elite-dangerous-64\logs folder. This had star visited information. the first versions just used to give the star name, later we got star name and position (X/Y/Z).

So not, they are not the same, do not contain the same data.
