Newcomer / Intro My 'wheel' doesn't work....

My INSIGHT HUB WHEEL is ok .... press and hold the designated key and it opens and stays open.
It's the other one I'm having problems with ... the ITEM WHEEL.. I find I have to hold down the designated key to keep it open AND I can't select anything anyway
Any suggestions...?

Hold down the Item Wheel key and while keeping it held use whatever your left/right/up/down keys are to move to the options.

... also, I think you need to let go of the Item Wheel button before the direction button for it to activate the selection. I found it very 'clunky' to start with but it quickly became second nature.

EDIT: at least for the energy cell / health options to left and right. Getting the corners requires some finger gymnastics :)

Yes, letting go is the problem... when I let go, the wheel disappears!
Think I'll try some clever keybindings and see if that solves it...

I think you can also set it so you hold the button, then use the mouse movement to select an option. That may be worth a try.

Nice try... but the mouse doesn't work if I hold down a key
(mebbe because I have the mouse bound to 'look around' control.)
Think I'll just bind individual keys to these functions and just remember them
Thanks for taking the time to help!

The way you said it... you ARE on foot, right. Just making sure. :)
Also, did it work before and stopped working? Or did it never work?
Check your bindings. In the main "On Foot" section, aside from the "Item wheel horizontal" and "Item wheel vertical" which are supposed to be bound to an joystick axis and don't work properly if you bind them to a button or a key, there are separate bindings for "Item wheel up" "Item wheel down" "Item wheel left" and "Item wheel right"

Hi Chris
First, thanks for taking the time to reply to this frustrating matter!
Yes, I am on foot!
I've fiddled with the 'on foot' settings
The problem is that the wheel DOESN'T STAY OPEN when I press the assigned key - it just disappears if I let go
I've sort of addressed the problem - I noticed an option in the settings to allow the mouse to operate while I held the assigned key (as suggested by FrogsFriend) and now this works, but it is cumbersome and requires both hands. Unless I can resolve this, I'm just resigned to assigning individual keys to each function.
Thanks again for your help
JJ

Yes. That's how it works, unfortunately. You have to hold the key, choose the required item (highlight it either with directional keys or the mouse) and then release. Releasing the key "confirms" your choice.
But yes, I agree it's really clumsy and I would actually call it "stupid and a slap in the face of PC players", because it's clearly designed for a console controller. Station menus being designed for controllers I don't have a problem with - after all, using the controller to fly the ship is a valid option plus they are fine even when you run through them with HOTAS or mouse. But the controller is the worst of all possible ways to control FPS gameplay, so on foot I'm not willing to forgive them.
Fortunately there are action keys, yes.

Thanks Chris
I'm looting a settlement at the moment, so I had to find a place to lie low so I could ALT-TAB out to reply :)
(never know when those wretched commandos might start rappellling down...l)
Well, if that's the design, then I suppose I'll just have to put up with it
(it seems silly though, since the INSIGHT hub works ok, with PC players in mind)
Thanks again for your response

That's what I did. That item wheel is fiddly as heck, nearly unusable.

Yep, useless IMHO
(what, if you're a PC user you need 2 hands just to toggle your shields on/off? They have to be kidding....)

Maybe we misunderstood the devs' intent.
What if the item wheel's purpose is to infuriate and frustrate the player? (like many other things in Elite) In that case I'd say it works flawlessly.

Thanks Chris
Well, there's nothing in the evidence to suggest you're wrong...
Take the SRV controls for example - a classic case of someone fixing something that wasn't broken!
