Back when I was a young and naive Bounty hunting lass zipping around in my Eagle I thought 'Oh I'll take one of those kill target missions! I've been killing things so easily at the Nav beacon I'm sure I can take this on alone!'
I find my target, and wouldn't you know it...he's in an Anaconda. Silly silly Bounty Hunting newb version of me thought 'well I helped take down one of those before I just have to use my speed and agility to stay out of range' little did I know then that my floundering set of skills (I was still Ranked as Harmless back then) that I wasn't going to be able to pull that off as easily all by my lonesome. So I engaged the Anaconda...start blasting his shields down, doing my best to stay away from his guns...but it was all for naught. I got caught a few too many times for too long in range of my target's guns...and pop goes my canopy. That was the first time I've had that happen and I was freaking the heck out. I hadn't upgraded my life support...newbie little me had thought 'PSHAW Life support? When will I ever have to use that?'
So there I was, poor little me, freaking out with a timer counting down from 5 minutes, with an angry Anaconda still breathing down my neck, and to top it off I was in a system that had not a single station. So boosting the heck away from what I was now seeing as the Grim Reaper himself I was also frantically selecting the closest inhabited system I knew with a station close to the drop in point. I powered up my hyperdrive and managed to jump the heck away before the citadel of death I had angered caught back up with me. But I was still watching that timer count down, and the lower it got the more and more I thought 'this is it...this is how my first death will occur...' I drop in system and pushed my throttle as far forward it could go to get to that station. I had thought SC speeds near targets could be agonizingly slow before, but with a timer counting down to your death it becomes painfully so. I was practically screaming at my ship to move faster (and might have used some very un-lady like language there as well). Lucky for me I reached the station and just punched the booster as I was requesting docking. I didn't even try to slow down as I approached the letterbox...I blew through that thing at full speed. And made it into the air seal with 10 seconds left on my life support. That was the day that I learned A: Don't take on an Anaconda alone, B: Life support is actually pretty useful, C:It was probably time to get a bigger ship.
