Near Death Experiences. Post yours!

If you have any near death or extremely close calls, be them from supercruise (like mine), combat, trading, interdiction... post stories of your endeavors and those close calls that could have bankrupt you or otherwise!

I have mine in video clip form, but for those that don't want to look at it... I came out of supercruise to an ocellus station and it dropped me at the BOTTOM of the station so I whizzed by the station parts, completely not in control. The game nearly killed me.

I was looking for a Pirate Lord, searching USSs, when I dropped into one to be greeted, head on, with a Lakon 9 filling my entire screen! Needless to say I had a bit of a shock followed by a nasty crash which knocked my widescreen out and left my hull at 35%. Thankfully I had a decent shield and Military plating. The cheeky NPC then decided to offer me a transaction that I could not refuse (i legged it, fearing he would ram me again).

Closest I've come was when I was interdicted by a player in a Python...didn't threaten me or anything, just started shooting...luckily I got back into supercruise with a few % hull left and all systems still functioning. That was the most exciting couple of minutes I've had in this game, it would have been nice if the other guy had rp'd a bit and maybe gloated or something but it was good gamepplay.

I was fighting an sp for a 40k bounty and he was at about 40% hull then out of nowhere one of his buddies rams me, brings me down to 35% hull, a broken canopy on 7 minutes of oxygen, and the Asp and his 2 viper buddies are still firing at me. That was not a fun day because it was my first canopy breach AND I don't like fighting more than 1 or 2 enemies at a time.

Having a capture device for things like this is why I love gaming. I have the clip of that too but it isn't as interesting. This game is full of times it just wants you dead...

Back when I was a young and naive Bounty hunting lass zipping around in my Eagle I thought 'Oh I'll take one of those kill target missions! I've been killing things so easily at the Nav beacon I'm sure I can take this on alone!'

I find my target, and wouldn't you know it...he's in an Anaconda. Silly silly Bounty Hunting newb version of me thought 'well I helped take down one of those before I just have to use my speed and agility to stay out of range' little did I know then that my floundering set of skills (I was still Ranked as Harmless back then) that I wasn't going to be able to pull that off as easily all by my lonesome. So I engaged the Anaconda...start blasting his shields down, doing my best to stay away from his guns...but it was all for naught. I got caught a few too many times for too long in range of my target's guns...and pop goes my canopy. That was the first time I've had that happen and I was freaking the heck out. I hadn't upgraded my life support...newbie little me had thought 'PSHAW Life support? When will I ever have to use that?'

So there I was, poor little me, freaking out with a timer counting down from 5 minutes, with an angry Anaconda still breathing down my neck, and to top it off I was in a system that had not a single station. So boosting the heck away from what I was now seeing as the Grim Reaper himself I was also frantically selecting the closest inhabited system I knew with a station close to the drop in point. I powered up my hyperdrive and managed to jump the heck away before the citadel of death I had angered caught back up with me. But I was still watching that timer count down, and the lower it got the more and more I thought 'this is it...this is how my first death will occur...' I drop in system and pushed my throttle as far forward it could go to get to that station. I had thought SC speeds near targets could be agonizingly slow before, but with a timer counting down to your death it becomes painfully so. I was practically screaming at my ship to move faster (and might have used some very un-lady like language there as well). Lucky for me I reached the station and just punched the booster as I was requesting docking. I didn't even try to slow down as I approached the letterbox...I blew through that thing at full speed. And made it into the air seal with 10 seconds left on my life support. That was the day that I learned A: Don't take on an Anaconda alone, B: Life support is actually pretty useful, C:It was probably time to get a bigger ship.

I had one just now. There was a loud bang and then i got sort of tunnel vision. After this i saw a rapidly approaching light. I couldn't help but go towards it. It was so beautiful. Then i realized it was just the frame shift drive.

Normally near death = death for me :D

However two days ago I was coming into land at an outpost, and got distracted by real life. When I turned back I was going in WAY too quickly, and tried to slow down, realising that this just was not going to happen, I looked for the longest over shoot region at the platform, and noticed a dark, twisted , area just behind the landing pad...after a little bit of millennium falcon piloting to get through pipes and stuff, I managed to fly out the other side unharmed....lesson learned? stuff real life and focus on the damn game! :D

Heading to station after boost and docking request, still pretty far out, 2 pips in systems 4 in engines, cargo full of rares. My dog is bored and wants to play so I start to tug on a toy with him and throw it around my desk but playing with him.

Only away from the screen for 15 secs or so but I thought I'd put my ship to half throttle. I didnt, still going full and the huge station was right in front of me as I immediately hit full reverse thrusters (seriously think the -100 thruster key saved me). Still bounced off the station and lost full shields and was critically damaged down to 6% life.

Huge repair bill (for a cobra at least) and I vowed never to pay attention to another living creature in my house - until I'm safely docked! ;)

Not had a near death experience yet. Didn't think it was possible.
Had a couple of close calls with an insurance claim.
Coming out of Hyperspace near one of those white hot stars I had the input focus on another window so my HOTAS was not responding. Warning! Taking Heat Damage! Arrrgh *furiously pulls back on stick and reduces throttle to no effect*
It was close.

Smacking an Anaconda with my face though a busted canopy is one. The other bounty-hunting in an asteroid belt and I forgot to dodge the asteroids- 100% down to 4% hull....

Great story, well written! +1

Thanks. Most exciting story I have from this game...but it was also the moment that sold me on it too.

Sadly I haven't had the chance to build up more stories of 'bounty hunter dys' since I've been trading. But I'm so close to getting enough to combat fit an Asp that I might just turn back to it soon...or I might just hold out for a clipper.

I had been killing pirates at an extraction site around jupiter for an hour or two, and wanted to head back to cash in bounties. During the time I had been there the sun had become obscured by jupiter so the asteroids were rather difficult to see (and I was probably tired). Trying to get away from the mass-lock I boost straight into an asteroid.. systems down, 7 minutes of air left... Managed to get into station with 34 secs of air remaining... :p

Most of my near death experiences have resulted in actual death. The only real close call that didn't was getting the canopy shot out of my Freagle with bog standard life support fitted. Managed to dock at an outpost (actually got immediate clearance to land for once, which was nice) with about 15 seconds to spare. Had to change my tight black toe hugging trousers after that one.

I did have another incident when I was returning from a bounty hunting session in an RES with no ammo left in the cannons, my Cobras canopy cracked all to hell, 34% hull (don't ask, an Anaconda was involved) and got interdicted. Tried to evade it which failed and lost me another 10% hull, and still managed to take out the pirate scum in another Cobra. Not really near death, but lots of fun.

I launched from an outpost and immediately turned to the left navigation screen to plot a jump while simultaneously raising the landing gear and speeding away on full throttle, then noticed a huge tower on the station rapidly passing my side window about 3 feet away.....

Great stories, thanks for sharing.

I got interdicted by an NPC Cobra the other day while I was fuel scooping. Shot it to pieces, but before it could explode, it smashed my canopy. 5:00 minutes left in a non populated system. Checked the galaxy map really quick for a station that provided repairs and found one quite nearby. Made it to the station with some 30 seconds left. Aligning, requesting docking and rushing in took me most of that. When I touched the pad there were only 3 seconds left. I thought I'd die right on the pad, but it seems the stations are filled with air.

Today I died to an Imperial Clipper NPC. I returned from a combat zone with just about 50% hull left, out of missiles and with a cargo hold full of rares. (I thought it is a brilliant idea to go for a few fights to spice up the rares trading - next time I'll do that when I have sold my hold.) I just wanted to cash in the combat bonds and was heading to the nearest station. Got interdicted and decided to fight. It went pretty well at first, but once the NPC Lady had stripped my shields, my thrusters died and right after that me.

I used to do a lot of nav beacon bounty hunting in my fully specced viper. Got pretty cocky as nothing was a problem. On the way home once I got interdicted, "another customer" I thought. It was a viper, "no worries". I start my pass, engage kws and we're set to joust, but I never expected him to ram me...

I didn't get a bounty for destroying him but he exploded on impact, which was.... interesting. My shields went instantly, and my hull went straight down to 2%. Lesson learnt, it's not just big ships that ram you.

I've got away with single figure Hull % 3 times, once today in a conflict zone I jumped out with 6% Hull, another time I got knocked down to 6% and my cockpit smashed by an anaconda in a RES, then got interdicted on the way to the station and knocked down to 3% before I got away, only to find the nearest station didn't do repairs so I had to jump to another system with 3% hull and no cockpit

and most embarrassingly I got stuck on the toast rack thing at the station entrance as was down to 1% when I got away :D
