Newcomer / Intro Need advice on combat ship

I suspect that is the most common source of newbies' first deaths. They just freeze when they get interdicted and wake up staring at a rebuy screen.
When you know what to expect, where to check your shields, how long is an FSD cooldown, where is a boost button, how to read the radar to see your attacker and know which way to run, etc. then even if you're in a ship totally unsuitable for combat, your chance for survival is very close to 100%.

Have fun out there!
That pretty much describes my first experience of being interdicted in my Sidewinder, except by pure luck I survived. Only because security dropped in very quickly ( I think they feel they’ve done their bit for me now as they never seem to drop in quickly anymore) and they took out my attacker.

Amidst the sweaty palms, confusion and random button pushing alongside some furious joystick waggling I actually thought I’d done it somehow for a while, I also thought they were there to attack me as well - thankfully I probably hadn’t even successfully deployed my hardpoints so couldn’t get myself into further bother.

I really do miss the first few hours of playing Elite.

@0threeleven - congratulations on your first bounty, that was a nice haul too.

Ya, I was pretty brave with 5 System Authority ships backing me up, I've been shot at before in my Vulture (interdicted, had no idea what was going on), I kept chinking, bobbing and boosting until my FSD cooled down, that happened in the kiddie pool. I'm ready for more, I found a spot in a ring system of the local gas giant but got interdicted on the way there and lost the lock (I FSS scanned for it).

I can see how it turns you in to an adrenalin junky, I sure felt awkward at first. After I rammed the other ship, I kept a close eye on my pips, I had everything on shields and weapons. You can tell I'm an explorer using my FSS scanner to find pirates.

Pro tip (I am not a pro at combat but heyho) :

If you are going into a combat situation - before even deploying hardpoints, plot a course to a nearby system, check that the destination is not obscured and then go shoot stuff. If things go runny (clipping a cop etc) - retract hardpoints, select "next system in route" - head out (boosting) of the asteroid field (if that is where you are) then engage hyperjump as soon as you come out of the ring's mass-lock. A hyperjump is not delayed by another ship's presence like supercruise is.

* You DO have that binding set don't you? No? Well, do it now (it is not set by default if I remember correctly), it is useful when travelling too if something shiny distracts you or you get interdicted and decide to cream the scum.

Saved my bottom many, many times.

No, didn't know, I'll set that up next time I play (I should buy stock in sticky notes). That's a great tip...... (y)

It amazes me that it isn’t a default binding because it’s actually one of the most useful bindings (for so many situations) in the game.
….and yes, it was Para who tipped me off to that one too…still grateful for that one!

There are so many functions and bindings to memorize and discover when you're starting the game that it probably wouldn't make a difference if it was bound by default.
Just one more button that "does something but you don't know what it is".

I got me 5 or 6 more today (3.1 million credits along with rep increase, ect.) and I'm wondering if I should turn in the vouchers at Mel Brandon's or would it matter if I turn them in at Jaques Station? It's just the way Chris Simon said, the adrenalin is pretty much gone now, I'm becoming a salty dog.......... (y)

Turn in enough to Mel to get the unlock and use the rest however you want, remember they will be lost with your ship if it gets destroyed.

Got it, thanks. I didn't think about that with the ship, I'll turn them in next time I play.

Wait, are you telling me, that as an explorer, you did not experience a major catastrophic event, like plummeting into a planet, resulting in loss of all your exploration data? Oh my... Then you are in for a lot of fun, when that happens to you... :) Please let us know when you pop your cherry... :)

I actually blew up over Farseer's base one time, I have know idea what happened, I was boosting towards the base about 20 kilometers out and poof, rebuy time. That was my first time dying, second time was in an SRV trying to reach my ship that kept landing on an imposable plateau every time I recalled it.

I've turned in all my exploration data, aRJay was talking about bounty vouchers, I just went to Mel Brandon's Brig and "donated" 100,000 Cr worth of vouchers. So I pinned thermal resistant shields up to grade 5.

Yeah, I know he was talking about bounty vouchers, but all of these are lost, when you wreck your ship and die... :) I assumed, that if you have never wrecked your ship, you would not have known you lose everything...

Ha, gotcha, I was paranoid that I had lost all my mats, thank heaven I didn't. I wonder where those are stashed? Maybe in a double secret backpack.

Yeah, those are somehow safe... You only lose data... You can be full of mats, which I assume would be a couple of tons of mats, but magically they appear in your ship after rebuy...

Remlok Industries obtained exclusive licensing rights from Gallifray Inc to use TARDIS™-enhanced pockets in their survival suits - thus providing capacity for thousands of elements, manufactured materials and datacores holding garnered data. Unfortunately as a by-product of lengthy and expensive litigation with the now-defunct GalCop, storage of exploration and bounty data is incompatible with TARDIS™ technology.

So, it's kinda like that girls purse in Harry Potter or that tent they had when they were on the run.

You must have been approaching without an invite. sometimes. you meet the requirements for the invite, but you don't actually get it until you re-log.
Ouch, that explains a lot. I was very perplexed to say the least, I was all proud in my brand new Anaconda, gonna get some engineering done, wham. At first I thought I had lost everything.
