Need advice on GPU.

Hey everyone!!

I have a dk2 and at the moment i can only manage to play it on low settings. My bottleneck seems to be my GPU. I currently have a MSI r9 280 overclocked. If i run everything on low settings i can get a reasonable frame rate (around 60-65 in statsions/asteroid fields. 75 anywhere else)but i want to be able to up the graphics. Reading around has made me unsure whether i can add a 2nd 280 and OC it to get that higher graphics. Anyone had any experience with this?

Thanks for any advice.

China - I'm running on an R9 280 at the moment. The issues for me are where FPS drops and the tracking goes pear shaped. Often, this seems to happen when the GPU and CPU are not taxed - but when ships appear in the system (players or NPC) whilst in super cruise etc.

But - my gut feeling is that I don't think the R9 280 will be enough even after Liquid VR / DX 12 and in game optimisations happen. But I'm going to wait until these things have come a bit closer before I splash the cash on a new GPU. Best of luck with your purchase though.

Was hoping some 1 had tried it before. Not sure if I feel comfortable rolling the dice without real knowledge of if it's going to work or not. Hopefully more people see this thread and have tried it before!

Nvidia is the clear leader for now
A gtx 970 can be had for cheap, sub 300 used
There are a ton for sale still within warranty
Or a 980 of course for 400 or so used or 550 new.

Id say nvidia for quite some timeuntil amd brings out next gen

A 2nd 280 would probably do it. I had one, and it struggled at minimum settings in things like supercruise (approaching the planets) and in big, busy stations. I wound up switching to two GTX 970s, and that seems to do the trick for the most part (it would on minimum settings anyway, I'm trying to be a little more ambitious, but as time progresses I am still finding situations where there are problems, but they are really restricted to RES zones with tons of ships in and might actually be CPU bound, not to mention I found my four year old SSD was flagging and having switched to something a little faster some of the hangs/jerks on loading assets seem to have gone, game loads faster too). This is with 2x supersampling on the 970's though. I haven't tested lower supersampling properly but will give 1.5x a try to see if that eliminates the rest. Tentatively, quickly switching to that seemed enough on its own to reduce GPU load by some 20-30% if Afterburner isn't lying to me.

tl;dr: I'm not finding that the GPUs are the only factor here. I had/have other problems with my system it seems. Beware that you may end up dropping a lot of time/cash chasing the experience you want so just be certain that you are happy to do that for reasons other than just ED (or that ED is that important to you that you're happy to do it).
