Need some help / direction for X3

Hey everyone, Elite grew stale for me a second time but my space itch is in full frenzy and I am very interested in trying out the X-3 games (Espically before X4 drops which looks great and I am excited for). I am confused some though, there seems to be the Reunion, Terran Conflict, and Albion Prelude? I am not trying to play through the entire series, just settle in with one game and really get deep. What is the best game out of them, I am looking for the game furthest along that can be played vanilla without mods and provides the best sandbox experience (Not looking for a set quest-line / story). Are they all stand alone games, are they expansions, do I get them all and it expands the base game... Kind of flabbergasted. Any help / advice is greatly appreciated!

If your wondering why post about this on Frontiers forums, I have ghosted here for a very long time and respect and enjoy many of your posts and its a great community, one of the few game / developer forums that keeps me coming back constantly even when the game grows stale and I need a break. I value what you all have to say and know this is one of the most passionate and dedicated space game community's, so I give top priority to your insights and advice.

Edit: So I guess Albion prelude being the last DLC for X3 is played on top of the stand-alone game of Terran Conflict, being the latest / most updated version of the game? So I guess I won't need to buy Reunion, and just TC and AP. I would still love the hear anything anyone has to say about jumping into this for the first time and if there is somehow any reason or value for grabbing X-3 Reunion as well.

personally, my favourite was TC, its more of a sandbox, whereas AP I felt injects too much storyline into the game and influences what you want to do.

You can work through the campaign, which isnt too long and then go off and build your empire!

Its a great game.

I would take a look at some mods though, there are some good ones out there, including complete overhauls.

You guess right. :) (and I have to amend a statement of mine in another X-related thread around here, were I wrongly remembered AP as a full stand alone title in the same way as TC)

If you get the "Terran War Pack" (TC+AP combined) you're pretty much set, no need to play Reunion unless you really are interested in the plot and lore (the re-connection to the Earth system, as the title implies). As a sandbox experience, you'd feel severely limited in options and features (and ships, and systems...) compared to the TC+AP combo.

Great posts guys definitely the type of feed back I was looking for. I only get a few hours a week to play games lately and I tend to play one game and get into it and really only play that for my duration so I don't jump into things lightly anymore. Starting with TC sounds good to me, will pick up the Terrain Conflict bundle so I have AP to add into the experience if I get sucked in.

As someone just starting out, what would you guys recommend for mandatory mods that a first timer would want to have installed as far as quality of life and fixing broken behavior etc? I don't want to get into any mods that expand the game as far as content etc goes but from reading around on stuff it seems like there's things that address inherent issues the game has and I don't want to learn the vanilla game to figure out whats broke and what makes things easier if I can just start off with them and learn it from there. I would love to hear your recommendations and reasoning behind them so I can set myself up nice. Thank you all for taking the time to share your advice and perspectives with me I appreciate it.

These are mods that became official addons, pretty much all I use for X3TC. Basically an energy cell powered afterburner (fast cap ships !!!!! and fighters) and programmable independent traders so you can automate factory raw mat buying and product selling. These make it possible to do the hub quest fetch missions (worst grind in gaming history) automatically.

All in one bonus package.

A strategy I use in X3TC is go to the bottom right star system and set up a self supplying factory complex flogging weapons and topping my cap ships up with free nukes. There are some nice asteroids, you'll need to grid your complex to fit it in.

Once you have independent traders (bonus package) you can train them to use jumpdrives, so they land at your factory fill up on power and weapons and then jump round various equipment docks selling it. Huge profits.

EDIT : as mossfoot said use rougeys site, it also has how to guides for the trade software as well.

So that link to the bonus package would be all the starting out mods you would recommend? And rougey's just for guides on how to use the mods?

The Bonus Pack is not even a collection of mods as much as its practically an additional features pack for the game, as Stigbob said it's officially supported, integrated into the game and made available by Egosoft themselves. Pointless not to have it :). As for "real" mods, I've never really used them with X2/X3, always preferred the game as it was, so I'm not in the position to give any meaningful suggestion.

Yep, it's all I bother with same as Akenbosch. I also grab a mod called lowpoly complexes if my gridded factories get too big and tank performance. (might not be an issue with modern PC's, but all the connections of massive complexes used to be an issue).

Sweet, I appreciate the shared wisdom. Looking forward to grabbing this up on my next day off.

They released an update within the last year, it now supports gamepads.

Always have a backup save before you start a campaign mission, they can go gamebreakingly wrong sometimes. I have a before I accept it backup and a during the mission save.

Good advice, sounds like the strategies I had to use in any Bethesda game 😄

Edited for the rush of nostalgia your comment brought me: Daggerfall was the first such game I learned to employ such tactics. But man what a game for a 13 year old to get sucked into. The fear and anxiety as I would get lost in endless procedural dungeons and the 3d map would make my primitive comp lag so... But I digress...

Found this topic just today...

I am a player of the X-Games up from the first one (X:BtF).
Still starting X-BtF from time to time on my Windows 10 PC, just to enjoy the music and to see the huge progress in graphics nowadays in compare to the past.

Because X2 and X3 own a script language and so is programmable I developed some scripts for X2 and X3:Reunion and X3:Terran Conflict automation in the past.

I provide you the links here below, just take a look. Many players found them very useful.

English Versions of scripts (X3):
