Need to clarify something

Hello all ^^

Regarding "exploring the galaxy" when you guys talk of exploring and discovering new stuff - basically you're talking about FS'ing from sys to sys and scanning "unknowns" and just going were your directions take you and grabbing cartog data along the way yes?

And you refuel in new discovered stations etc or/and use the fuel scoop?

That's "exploring" yes? and there isnt like some sort of "thing" you have to do first like reach a certain rank or talk to a certain contact to say "I'm going exploring" etc?

correct, as kirk said when asked which direction : "That away"

goals help, like sag A* or the annihilator or a nebula or a galactic arm or farming to rank up in the neutron fields

There are no stations outisde of habitable space, so after you leave the habitation bubble you will need your fuel scoop.

Dangit, Whiterose, I was going to say I'd only found a couple of undiscovered stations, so better take a fuel scoop!

No, you just make sure you have a fuel scoop - there are no stations once you get far enough away - and take some advice on other equipment [I purposely didn't head out until I could get a ship with Advanced Discovery scanner, fuel scoop, and detailed surface scanner] and then just pick a direction and go.
Once you are out far enough you are completely on your own, I haven't seen another player or NPC in ages, except if I come back to sell data. This means some people, myself included, dispense with all non-essential equipment to gain jump range. Once you spend a lot of time outside colonised space and are on your own, this can include shields - but you will have to make up your own mind on that one.

You'll need a fuel scoop (the best you can afford) as there is nowhere to buy fuel from. I'd strongly recommend Advanced Discovery scanner (so you can see the whole system with a single scan, even if its 500k ls across) and a Detailed Surface Scanner so you can get extra explorer income and "first discovered by" markers when you are first to sell data for that body.

Even really basic ships can be effective explorers. A lot of the talk is on maximising jump range. This isn't essential and only really makes a difference if you are trying to reach the extremities of the galaxy or trying to get somewhere specific as quickly as possible.

I wouldn't worry too much about ship, I made millions exploring in a flaming orange Eagle, the only thing you have to fuel scoop more often other ships but it really isn't that big of a deal...unless you hit a large patch of Brown Dwarves or T Tauris.

Some are born explorers

Some achieve great exploration goals

Some have exploration thrust upon them. This of course would be dognosh and that whole mistaken identity / goathypnol incident.
