New Faction Colonization.

I have my own faction that consists of just myself. I am wanting to colonize my own system and have located several systems that are far away from all others. The issue i am having is for some reason it has been made so that you must already control a system to enjoy the colonization capabilities released. That really cuts out a large spanse of players who dont have members or want to join other peoples factions in order to enjoy the aspects of a game i have pumped money into. If my systems i have discovered are far from the dangers of others faction controlled areas, why then couldn't i claim them outright for my faction to control from the start? I just want a place to call my own that i can invest my time into while i play solo.
My only other option would be to have a faction turn over a controlled area to me since i could never defeat a faction controlled area by my lonesome. This just seem designed to cut out the solo player who may not have the capabilities of large friend groups or comfortability playing in large factions. I have had several bad experiences with large factions which is why i play solo. Im still a player and i have still pumped my hard earned money in this game from xbox to pc so should be able to enjoy all aspects offered regardless of playstyle or faction size. Noone should have to control a system in order to claim a new one. Especially one that is unhabitated and nowhere near the bubble or active systems.

?

You initiate colonisation from an already populated system within 15 LY, not one you necessarily control.

As a solo player I have colonized about half a dozen systems with no issues myself, so I am unclear what you are expecting to be able to do or not. Please clarify.

Then I apologize. I was unclear about the distance I needed to be to the system I want. I will take down my thread. Thanks you for the clarification.

No need to apologise. At my age I get confused as well.

If you have found a nice system more than 15LY away (and current thinking is that this is unlikely to change), then there are a couple of things that you can do. Monitor expansion towards the area of your system of choice and when it is eligible for claiming, claim it. Be aware that it is a really nice system, then someone may have their eyes on it. Otherwise you could build your own bridge of systems (outposts only) to get to it.

Thank you so much for this advice!! I have been dying to experience this part of elite since I began playing on Xbox. New to odyssey so beennitching for this possibility since I heard it was going to be a thing. Thank you for your help!! 07 sir

To go into more detail about this:
- set your squadron to align to the faction you want to colonise with
- colonise the system you want using any station within 15 LY (this picks the station owner as the sponsor faction)
- you'll get the following faction set up in the new system

Sponsor faction: 60%
Random nearby faction: 20%
Your squadron faction: 13%
Random nearby anarchy faction: 7%

You can then put your squadron faction in charge of the system using normal BGS methods (can be fairly quick once you have your first station's mission boards running, which will happen the Thursday after you finish building it, usually) and go from there, either to colonise new systems or just build them up further in that one.

There's no range limit on how far the system you're colonising is from wherever your squadron faction currently is (I dragged mine over 20,000 LY as a test) - the 15 LY limit only applies to the sponsor faction setting the system up initially.

Are you confusing Squadron and Faction?

Squadrons are like Guilds or Clans - you can create a Squadron and be a member of it, and you can invite other members.
Faction are NPC political entities in the game. Years ago players could insert a custom-named faction into the game, but that's no longer possible. But these player factions behave exactly like all of the other ones, we don't have direct control over them.

Now, you can alingn your Squadron with a Faction - any faction, be it one that other players named or whatever. You then get some more information about that faction in your Squadron UI.

That's it, not much more to it.

When it comes to colonisation, you can purchase a System Claim from a colonisation contact in any station. The claim will be for the faction that controls the station you purchase the claim from. You can colonise within 15 LY from there.

Yes but can't a guild also have a faction too? I've seen others who have both player guild and factions that operate within the BGS

The squadron can be optionally aligned to a faction (any faction the squadron leader is personally allied with, changeable any time they feel like it).

There used to be a scheme (which was older than the squadron feature) where player groups could request new factions be created for them, so a lot of the more established groups aligned their squadrons to that faction. That ended back in 2023, so you'll have to pick one of the existing factions: provided you can get allied with them this can be any of the 70,000+ factions in the game.
