New Horizons (the probe that gave such great images of Pluto last year) is due to make has survived a flyby of Ultima Thule [aka Kuyper Belt Object (486958) 2014 MU69] on New Year's Day - the resulting images will take 20 months to be completely transmitted back to Earth.

When the mission sweeps past the 30km wide object on New Year's Day, it will be making the most distant ever visit to a Solar System body - at some 6.5 billion km from Earth.

Last week I did a tour of the ancient probes including New Horizons to basically show how much easier it was to locate them using the new FSS system.

The overflight of Ultima, will have his anthem, composed for the occasion by the guitarist of Queen group, Brian May, who also holds a doctorate in astrophysics.

Plus info that Sky At Night is to do a "special" about it:

The BBC's Sky At Night programme will broadcast a special episode on the flyby on Sunday 13 January on BBC Four at 22:30 GMT. Presenter Chris Lintott will review the event and discuss some of the new science to emerge from the encounter with the New Horizons team.

An exciting mission, no doubt.

However, there are many obstacles until total success.

Hope very good results until the end of 2020.

The US space agency's New Horizons probe has made contact with Earth to confirm its successful flyby of the icy world known as Ultima Thule.

This first radio message contained only engineering information on the status of the spacecraft, but it also confirmed that New Horizons executed its autonomous flyby observations correctly and that the probe's onboard memory was full of data.

A later downlink on Tuesday will see some choice images returned to give scientists and the public a taster of what New Horizons saw through its cameras
