General / Off-Topic New movie based FD game in development... guess the franchise!

I'd be surprised if it is space themed, they already have elite.

But I also can't be bothered with the drip feed of information, or in this case just plain guessing as the statement says that they well release more information later in the year.

So will forget this until they come out and tell us.

Not pinning your hopes on a Withnail & I game?

It won't be any of the DC stuff (Superman etc) as WB own those and they have their own game studio. I don't think it'll be Marvel because that is owned by someone else. EA has Star Wars. Star Trek is owned by Paramount (I think) and already have games under development.

That leaves only 3 choices.

1. Die Hard.
2. The Terminator.
3. The Human Centipede.

It can't be anything else.

Video games adapted into movies are always terrible. Always.

Untrue!

An underrated classic. With such fine performances it makes me weep every time, an intricate and mature plot, and a powerful message on why, when females fight, they must do so in mud. It really should have had a clean sweep at the oscars.

Its safe to say that it won't be Jupiter Ascending. The franchise that never was. There are rumours that the sequel Jupiter Descending may be in the works. Having said that in 30 years time it might be hailed as a cult classic.

Watching this movie made me cry..

Joking tho I was earlier about complainers saying Frontier might be spreading themselves too thin with this, what do people actually feel? Attempting to do a big movie franchise has damn near ruined other games developers in the past (sorry, I've no evidence to back this up at the moment but I feel like there are examples out there). I almost hope it's not something too big (like Bond or Bladerunner).

Would a lego game version of Elite Dangerous work?

We need to be scientific about this....

The movie need to have:

RNG
Distant Worlds
Aliens
Nerfed rewards
Jumping
A very limited number of ship types
No real way of customizing your internals

Wonder what movie fits all those points.

The only positive spin I can think to put on this - regarding Elite's future development - is if the new Hollywood franchise game is something very similar to Elite in scope and tech required to develop.
There's plenty of positive spin to be had. Frontier are currently trading on a portfolio of two products, with a relatively large staff (and therefore a relatively high burn rate). To sustain the level of growth that they've undergone in the last couple of years, they need to diversify their portfolio, so it would make sense to aim for something a little more mainstream than Elite and Planet Coaster. By doing so, the aim would be to stabilise their position so that they can continue to invest in the Elite franchise during those times when revenue is low (like now, in the middle of a long season, and when sales of PC have dropped off).

While some staff may move from Elite to this new project, there's also a large headcount who are available from the Planet Coaster side, which I'm sure will have downsized since it released at the end of last year. There are no ongoing seasons like with Elite, and while they'll continue development, it won't be at the same rate. They're also still recruiting, and AFAIK they want to grow further. They've done a great job of moving from being wholly a consultancy to being wholly self-published, so I don't think they'll take on a new project at the expense of others. [Also bear in mind that Elite is David Braben's pet project, and he will *really* want it to grow rather than shrink]

As to the franchise that they're licencing? Dunno, but I don't think it'll be Bourne as the game rights are either with the Ludlum estate or EA, not the film studio. If we're thinking about The Outsider technology then Bond would be a good fit, but it might be a little *too* big. Same goes for Star Trek, and that's sufficiently similar to Elite that I doubt they'll go there.

If that's what it is, FD could put together something pretty quick just using the ED ship and dogfighting model.

For everyone predicting this will be the doom of ED, this could be the exact opposite, if FD work on a proper MMO, rather than P2P.
What do you mean, if FD work on a proper MMO?

(not meant in a challenging way, just curious.)

They'll hire more. That means new staff, new programs and artists, and fresh blood in the company. Some of that might filter through to their other products.

This is good news.

Actually, come to think about it....

.. making a movie called Elite and making it into a dogfight space thingy could actually work quite well! Throw in some explores trapped on the other side of the galaxy and lots of aliens and stuff happening.. Good publicity to the Elite saga!

Elite Episode IV....

I guess from my point of view, when I see the state of Elite’s development today being behind schedule but still full of so much potential with lots of possible features and improvements, and couple that with the strong desire in the gaming community for great space games (look at NMS), to me it just seems like if Frontier would only increase development efforts on the Elite franchise (instead of diversifying the team onto other projects) then they could easily sell many more copies of it, not to mention ship kits, paint jobs, and other store merchandise. Frontier could easily corner the space game genre right now and strongly take the crown (and market) if they could only get their game under control, but spreading resources out onto new projects runs counter to that on top of adding a whole lot of risk.

I’ve seen studios in the past try to grow too fast and diversify too quickly when they still had projects which needed too much work or were having issues, and the result is almost always TWO franchises which fail due to strained resources and feature slip (stagnant development). I’d really hate to see Elite die a slow death, especially with the potential is has, simply due to Frontier trying to grab greener pasture just over the next hill when all they had to do was water the grass on the hill they were already standing on.

If Frontier are getting paid lots of £££ for creating a tie-in game... they're going to do what every other game developer has ever done, and make a mediocre game to get the cash, and say in their next advertising for Elite and/or Planet Coaster - 'From the creators of "The Predator (2018 release)"'.....

There's been some really good tie in games though, rare as they may be. The King Kong game based on Peter Jackson's film was great. Spider Man 2 on the PS2 became one of the all time greatest superhero and freeroaming games ever made.

- Predator Concrete Jungle on PS2 was great.
- Batman Arkham Asylum was all kinds of OMG! And the Arkham games that followed it were great.
- Goldeneye on the N64... need I say more.
- A bunch of Star Wars games were fantastic like Dark Forces, Jedi Outcast, Knights of the Old Republic, X-wing, Tie Fighter, X-wing Alliance, Bounty Hunter, Galactic Battlegrounds, Empire at War and others

Not every game developer/studio drops their pride and quality like a wet pair of pants at the mete sight of some moolah. And besides Frontier are already a multi-million dollar generating company from ED alone.
