New Planet Tech is KILLER of Exploration (all terrain is tiling/repeating/not procedural/random)

Right - so then from that rational it seems an easy fix; just a problem with the algorthm.

hardly worth 63 pages of nerdrage circlejerking

Thank you!

At last, someone else says it. I am not alone.

I have been called all sorts, and put on ignore simply for calling out their irrationality.

I avoided this thread like the plague after the first 3-4 pages of people circling stuff until the thread looked like Charlie going nuts in the mailroom

Oi! As of now I haven't seen you bringing any rationality in. Nothing wrong with disagreeing but if you accuse someone of irrationality maybe at least attempt to construct a counter argument that I can work with? Or are you with the Popular Front of Judea!

Having caught up with 40+ pages... why do so many seemingly sane people feel the need to reply to obvious trolls?
Pro tip: You don't need to feed them. You can use the ignore function.

I notice that, while the majority of planets look the same, there was one planet I found in my travels that was actually different and interesting, huge mountains that barely even looked real, pretty sure that planet might be bugged or something but its very beautiful

The silence from Frontier on the planet tech...

And the increasing number of pages on planet tech threads...

it just feels like this

Why don't they at least acknowledge the faulty tech? Considering this is a beta, is it that hard to reassure us simply with words?

The truth is that I can't understand it either. It would be so easy to reassure so many players who are concerned about the same thing. Their silence only leads to more speculation and suspicion.

Is this the new planetary technology?

"I'm glad you like it"

200 developers were working on oddysey ? Think more like 2,00. I have seen one man could do better job on planet terrain generation.

No. I listen to a stream explaining this. From what I understood - there were no hand made textures to randomize. It was algorithm (math) based generation and you cannot predict how your next planet will look like.

Now you have a collection of textures (..and maybe a collection of terrain forms?) Being reorganized randomly...this does not fair well with a galaxy hosting billions of stars.
That depends on how many handcrafted textures they have to randomize.

40, 400, 4000, 400,000

Oversimplification on my part, but you get the point.

Yes, there's no issue with handcrafted textures if you're rarely noticing them repeating. Hand-crafted textures will, after all, look nicer. But I don't know enough about how it all works to make grand statements about how it could be improved. There are trade-offs with every decision. The different between having 10 or 100 or a 1000 rock textures might have a vast impact on frame rate or the speed they can update them (I'm already getting weird updates).

The thing I don't quite get is that most of the repeating textures we're seeing don't feel like things that really need to be textures. The most egregious one I've seen is basically a wavy splodge.

We have to remember that with something like RDR2 (the gold standard for landscapes as far as I've seen) it's taken hundreds of artists several years to design the landscapes, whereas with ED it's taken one algorithm 1/60 second. Lanscapes created by artists are always going to look nicer than landscapes created by programmers.

In the picture below (which I love -- it just makes me want to head off and explore) I wish the pixelly pattern that indicates where the craggy bits are in the foreground was blended more seamlessly (and I assume these things will be tweaked) but at the moment I'm too busy loving everything else about it to care that much. It feels like seeing a beautiful picture of Angelina Jolie and complaining her elbows could be smaller.
