New Planet Tech is KILLER of Exploration (all terrain is tiling/repeating/not procedural/random)

Dr Kay Ross made some interesting general points on twitter recently re releases

The short of it is that time scales, dates and targets will not be announced until 1/?

things are certain internally. What generally wants to be avoided is saying "We think things will be sorted by X date" when the results of certain investigations and work is not known yet. It could end up being double that, and then people get angry and rile up worse sentiment2/?

over perceived broken promises. This is why an answer to this question isn't given on forums or during streams. It doesn't matter who is asking or for how long, news on release dates will only come forth when comfortable and arranged by the managers and CMs. 3/?

I understand and sympathise that it can be frustrating, left in a state of uncertainty over something you're interested in, but to do otherwise invites more trouble. 4/4

More interesting that after at least 6 years of experience (and including whatever experience they had prior to working on ED) they still aren't able to even remotely quantify their workload. It's like they're a government institution.
There's a difference between quantifying workload and reporting it publicly though.

pay attention to the screenshots of what was in the game Elite Dangerous Odyssey, and how it looked right now, I bought an odyssey for the sake of beautiful planets, and I don't need to tell me that my computer is weak, because I had such a high quality on ultra settings and at high settings, I saw how one person played at ultra settings, he has a 3080 rtix video card, and he also has low quality planets, as if he is playing horizons and not an odyssey, when I tested the game, I did not notice any changes in the number frames between beautiful planets in orbit, and those planets that have now become soap, then the question is why the quality of textures of planets in orbit was spoiled? I want a refund and revoke the odyssey dlc license. I do not want and will not play next horizons, that's exactly what the developers do, they turned the odyssey into horizons.

this is what we were promised

The pre-alpha planets that were shown in dev diaries seemed to have a different version of terrain generation, and especially looked a lot better from space than (most) planets do now. Right now it's also worse than it was in earlier updates because the Ultraforcapture option was replaced with the much worse Ultra+. It's a whole lot less sharp. I get why it was changed, but for the people who could run it (and switched to it for screenshots) it's sad to see it gone.

one of the costumes does not have some details, and after installing the icons on the costume, they are not displayed in the game itself.

the three elite icon on the ship is displayed incorrectly, it should be golden silver, but in the odyssey it is simple white yellow. I didn’t play so much for that so that the three elite icon became white yellow.

if I knew that they would ruin everything even before the third patch came out, which spoiled the quality of the planets, I did return this dls, I don’t live to play with planets of low resolution, I bought dls for the sake of beautiful planets, I thought I would take beautiful screenshots, but these the developers messed it up, how to play it now? I could just as well play horizons and not waste money on an odyssey

Oh well, for those there is an alternative:
Yea, it is great for planet exploration (with tons of stuff to do) but completely sucky for space exploration.

NMS Pro's: Flying ships (with no loading screens) from orbit to surface, then out again, exploration above and on the surface, mining, story vignettes, oceans, clouds, caves and overhangs but - everything in space :(...
SC: Gorgeous ships, in system micro jumps, fantastic planet re-entry, nice vegetation and water (only played free weekends) but paying for bitmaps and will it ever be release ready.
X4: Great spaceflight mechanics, ship traffic, station building / exploration, awesome trading engine, dangers out there in the black to discover and survive but no VR, no planetary landings, painful saving / loading.
ED: Orbital mechanics, huge scale, flight and fight mechanics, awesome in VR but too slow development and too fond of P2W grind mechanics without even the chance to actually pay to bypass it.

Special shoutout to Evochron Legacy (can't get past the dated graphics) and Space Engine (no spaceship game attached to it).

Happy 2022 everyone :alien:

You can do that in Elite Dangerous if you want, but since ED uses real size simulation planets and not toy size planets it will take a very long time, those aren't loading screens when you fly down to a planet, that's already loaded with the system.
Yeah kinda surprised he gave that point to NMS. I mean, you can do this in both games but Elite has way better scale.

I'm probably one of the most critical of Odyssey on these forums, but even my Odyssey never looked that bad. I'm wondering if your shader cache needs to be flushed or your settings folder rebuilt.

There's no doubt there are still issues with the planet tech, sometimes you do get some odd effects, blocky areas viewed from orbit, pop-ins sometimes, and flickeringa s you fly over the surface, but I really think it has improved hugely as the patches have progressed, I took these two of an icy planet today, just a randomly selected one;

And really I can't see much to complain about in these two images. Certainly if they all looked like the pictures posted then there would be good reason to complain, but I can't help thinking hardware and settings can make a huge different to the experience individuals have with the graphics.

FPS was quite low for the second picture because I was playing around with some video capture, it's normally at least 60fps in those situations.

The issue here is that people who have considerably better hardware than I do are posting much uglier screenshots than I've ever seen in my own game.

Yeah I have noticed that as well, there's certainly something going on that affects how it displays for each player, maybe presets somewhere, I did go through a major reset of all my graphic settings and stuff when Odyssey came out, still playing around with shadow settings to see what effect various settings have, played with AMD FSR but found no improvement in frame rate and a substantial drop in text quality on the HUD, not good enough for me I am afraid, my eyes aren't the best as it is and blurry text is just a none starter.

Played a bit with the AA to try and get the flickering down a bit, and playing around did help with that a bit, but it is a matter of trial and error. But I can still get some real good screenshots and sometimes I do see poorly rendered planets, but I find icy planets seem to actually be the best rendering bodies, specially at the right time of day.
