I did a post earlier in the thread about why it would make sense to have more than one region classification and how this could be used to provide more gameplay and richness to the universe, here.I disagree, it is exactly the historicity ("this used to be a hard to traverse area", etc) and player-driven lore of the region naming that makes the Galaxy more alive and interesting. The names are mostly tied to the qualities of the region and nearly half of the names for the in-game regions of the galaxy are actual RL galaxy names that have been decided on by actual professional astronomers. Purely numbering them doesn't really do anything in terms of entertainment, immersion and education. However, I'm a proponent of the hybrid naming scheme (names + numbers), because it would subdivide otherwise large regions (mostly the "arm" ones) to make it easier to share info on more specific regions.
The more I think about it, the more it makes sense that there would be multiple classifications.
In the game universe we’ve just come out of an approx 150 dark age in space travel and exploration for humanity. The renaissance in independent exploration which followed is what’s lead to the what out-of-game are the community names.
Other classifications would already have existed from the previous golden age (not official terminology, just using it for convenience) of development, expansion and exploration.
Hence, I would expect the official system in-universe to be different to the community generated one, but for the community one to be something that is new and growing in unofficial use.
