'Thank you' letter to FD: Feedback on the region names in beta
Greetings all - and thank you for your continued support to integrate community region names into the game.
After taking a few days to reflect on the implementation of region names in the beta, the mapping team sent the following letter to FD last week:
To the ED Dev Team
First of all – thank you for taking the time to consider our proposal to integrate the established community region names in the 3.3 update. The inclusion of these names helps bridge existing exploration community narrative and shared player history into the greater narrative of the game. Thank you for doing this. We won’t deny that we were surprised to see many new names introduced instead of community names, but also acknowledge that there are probably various technical, legal, and narrative reasons why this had to be.
Looking at the map of regions in 3.3 beta we have a few suggestions that we hope you will have time to consider before the new regions are introduced on the live server:
Sincerely
The Galactic Mapping Team
So that was the letter we sent last week. We wanted to keep it short, since devs are busy people, but we would also like to share our thoughts behind the letter with you who have supported this thread and the GMP.
First of all we consider it a tip of the hat towards the GMP community project that FD includes even some of the player suggested names. Any region name from the GMP that makes it into the live game is an acknowledgement towards all who have contributed POIs, regions, updates, coding, mapping assistance or third-party integration of GMP names in their own maps or videos.
At the same time we were surprised that FD felt the need to introduce so many new names. We never expected all the GMP names to be accepted, but had hoped to see a few more. Thus we decided to make a limited number of suggestions. The Perseus Fade, Abyssal Plain and Orion Spur Shallows were chosen to be featured in the letter due to them being 1) among the first player submitted regions, thus having the longest and richest history, 2) compatible with the english names FD has used for their own naming scheme.
With this letter we feel we have done what we can to represent the best interests of the GMP community project towards FD. Even though we serve as custodians of the GMP, we feel that this is a project that belong to all explorers. Now we can only hope that FD takes these suggestions into consideration.
All the best
The GMP Team

Looking at the map of regions in 3.3 beta we have a few suggestions that we hope you will have time to consider before the new regions are introduced on the live server:
Motivation: The name Outer Orion-Perseus Conflux is a bit cumbersome and doesn´t exactly roll off the tongue. We suggest simplifying this by using the name Orion-Perseus Conflux for this region instead and renaming the current Inner Orion-Perseus Conflux to something else entirely. | Motivation: One of the first regions to be named by players The Perseus Fade has a long history as a region where rim-travellers and circumnavigators have pushed ever further out towards the limits of the galaxy. The name is also evocative and intuitive as it captures the sense of the galactic arms fading away. If there was only a single additional community named region we could hope you would reconsider integrating into the live game The Perseus Fade would be it. |
Motivation: Another case of names that could be changed to work without the “Inner” / “Outer” qualifier. The Orion Spur is an iconic name known by many as the location of Sol, so using this on the map would provide an intuitive meaning for many players, while Orion Spur Shallows is another of the earliest player named regions. The name aptly describes how star density in this part of the spur is more shallow than in the Orion Spur proper. | Motivation: The name Abyssal Plain is derived from the fact that this is a region bordering The Abyss. It was named such by some of the first visitors scouting the distant stretches of the Scutum-Centaturus Arm and the name has caught on since then. A name that invokes the perils of exploration, the dangers of going into the utter blackness alone and ill prepared… |
Sincerely
The Galactic Mapping Team
