New Regions – Why not use the ones already established by the exploration community?

I disagree, it is exactly the historicity ("this used to be a hard to traverse area", etc) and player-driven lore of the region naming that makes the Galaxy more alive and interesting. The names are mostly tied to the qualities of the region and nearly half of the names for the in-game regions of the galaxy are actual RL galaxy names that have been decided on by actual professional astronomers. Purely numbering them doesn't really do anything in terms of entertainment, immersion and education. However, I'm a proponent of the hybrid naming scheme (names + numbers), because it would subdivide otherwise large regions (mostly the "arm" ones) to make it easier to share info on more specific regions.
I did a post earlier in the thread about why it would make sense to have more than one region classification and how this could be used to provide more gameplay and richness to the universe, here.

The more I think about it, the more it makes sense that there would be multiple classifications.

In the game universe we’ve just come out of an approx 150 dark age in space travel and exploration for humanity. The renaissance in independent exploration which followed is what’s lead to the what out-of-game are the community names.

Other classifications would already have existed from the previous golden age (not official terminology, just using it for convenience) of development, expansion and exploration.

Hence, I would expect the official system in-universe to be different to the community generated one, but for the community one to be something that is new and growing in unofficial use.

Hey there, this is a really awesome suggestion!

I know that we won't be able to move the regions. However, the team are aware of the request and will take it into consideration, for sure.

We will let you know when we have more news.

Many thanks!

The fact that this was not the developers first choice shows me that we the payers are not considered enough in this 'community driven' game.

Certainly naming the numbered regions after the bits of galactic arm they're on would make sense "Inner-mid Sag-Carina arm", "Outer Orion Spur", etc - they already follow those around and the boundaries match up ... but I got the impression that it was the community-chosen names that were being requested (they are often the more interesting and evocative ones) rather than just the "name it after the arm" approach.

I think you misunderstood me? I'm just saying the naming scheme used below would be a more specific naming scheme, whether informal or official:

Outer Arm - Region 29
Outer Arm - Region 30
Hyponia - Region 30
Hyponia - Region 31

Note the overlap, resulting in more specificity.

I agree and we can use both to create new subdivisions, resulting in more specificity, as shown above. However, might be a good idea to provide us with a galaxy map overlay or something. I'm sure FDev will at least respond to this thread. The GMP has done so much for the game.

I am the most important Commander in ED.
I approve of the OP's suggestion.

One of the above statements is true....

While it may be unpopular, I do like the new regions they made. There seems to be a hard edge of where each region ends and begins. This makes it easier to know where to search when dealing with the mysteries in each region. While they could have taken the regions already made and add hard divide between them. A way to have done that and keep the regions players have created would be to add a filter to the galactic map. So it would be color coded. Stars in region X would be red, while stars in region y would be blue. While keeping the old regions would have been nice, it seems these new regions will add a hard line to distinguish where any region ends or begins.
I personally did like how the old regions seem to fit better on the map in terms of working with the spiral shape.

Please note that our current proposal (nr 3. in the OP) would mean that you would get both. The numbered regions with clearly defined borders and a game mechanic purpose, and the GMP regions as an optional layer with a narrative purpose.

I feel like one part that people are glossing over is that they intend to use those region numbers to guide us towards certain regions or locations.
Therefore the size and location of the regions is important for more than just immersion.
I took a look and the GMP map and the regions have very different boundaries.

It might be easier for them to consider this then if the names that are offered match up to the regions they had put up on the map (This can be managed once beta starts to see how they overlap exactly)
