New Trading Tool - Cmdr's Log v1.1!

Thread Closed: Not open for further replies.
I just downloaded the 1.2 version, I haven't put in any data yet though. If I start putting in data is it easy to just copy the files in the Cmdr's Log folder and put them in the similar folder any new version?

Thank you for trying to make it fit on my little monitor, it's a little touch screen that I once used to launch apps but now just sits basically doing nothing and this seems an ideal use for it.

Yeah the new version doesn't have a save file, so even if you chose to overwrite in the folder you wouldn't lose anything. But yes, uses the same system_data.txt file you already have :)

This is a really nice little tool, I've been using the older version and it makes a world of difference (frankly it should be built into ED and auto fill the data when you visit stations but I digress).

A few feature requests if you feel like it.

Add a blackmarket checkbox and a quick search for black markets button

Add a faction drop down Empire, Federation, Alliance

Tag based grouping, Basically a tag box so I can add any number of searchable tags. Primarily so I can group stations by proximity or preferred trade routes but there could be many uses. Add a tag filter to the search results for the various searches.

Make the stations list an expandable tree structure with systems as the parent and stations as the children

Add an automatic timestamp when the commodity demands are updated.

That's all for now ;) All nice things to have but fine if you don't want to bother of course. :p

I do see all this stuff as evolution of the tool. I think extra station information is important. I also thought perhaps to AT LEAST be able to do a substring search on the NOTES for a station. That way you could use the notes field as your own tagging system. That might be a good quicker solution than a much bigger addition of specific functionality to stations.

At this point I need to retire from features for awhile so I can play :) Here it is another Saturday nearly gone and I haven't logged into Elite to play in over week (didn't even know the 2.0 update was out!) hehe.

I'll definitely be keeping new features in mind, especially as I play and realize the need for them on a direct personal level.

Oh yeah one other idea I had, not too sure on the practicality. If you can capture input events without the app having focus you could set it up so in game you select the first entry on the commodity screen and start the update process then the app captures your step down key and steps its commodity prices list also, then have a couple of hot keys setup for the various demand levels and another for step down in the app only (because stations do not list all commodities). I think once you got used to this it could really speed up the input process because you wouldn't have to keep switching back and forth you could just keep your eye on both lists and run through it quickly using just the keyboard.

Heh, yeah that can happen. Just thought I would mention things that had occurred to me whilst playing :)

I have considered hooking up some keyboard shortcuts for setting commodity status. Now, having it work whole the app doesn't have focus is a whole other ballgame I think. Not a bad idea, but it would probably be a real task to get it working.

Works great, but I can not seem to find "Atmospheric Processors" in the commodities listing. Though I could be blind, getting old :p

A neat idea, but I'm not sure how this would work as very few stations stock all commodities, so things would get out of step quickly, if not immediately, as very few stock explosives?

This is a great tool. The ability to import the spreadsheet made by the EliteOCR program would be epic. I don't feel this is cheating as you have to be at the station to take a screen shot or 4 of the commodity market for it to work.

Also info for mining types for the system would be good. Also their grade so you can search for pristine metalic etc.

Great work - I'm loving V1.2 - esp. the data-entry form - great work, thanks for sharing!

Could you add a station called 'Mining site A', and note what you find in the metals/minerals commodities list? Would that give you what you need?

After D/L this, I gave this a thorough test last night and it is ALMOST exactly what I wanted. My only wish would have been for price entry as sometimes there is no obvious trade using the h/m/l system, especially with the market appearing to have a lot less hi/lo routes/commodities. So at the moment I am still falling back to my OCR sheet to look for less lucrative but acceptable trades.
(note I am NOT looking for this to have OCR capability)

Just downloaded it and its awesome! Sorry to say but I have been using the online tools a bit. This however, makes me want to do it by hand; It just feels better and I think it will make my credits feel better in hand too.

Thanks for setting me right!

I've only just downloaded the tool to try it out today, and the first thing I thought of was NO PRICES on the tool, not even optional - Yesterday I did some trading and according to the in game tools I should have made some profit, but for some reason I made a loss on the items. I double checked the prices / demands etc and they looked a bit wrong. Oh well.

OP - Great looking tool at first glance, will try today. one thing that could be added if possible is a GENERAL NOTES sections as well - e.g. I have post it notes with system names I would like to "visit". On the stations & systems list on the left, you have a 3rd column, seems blank, but can we put a "*" or NB in there if there is a note on that system?

Great idea, I personally prefer this "own information" use, rather than a global online pricing system like some of the others.

I just opened the commodity_data.txt and added them.

I also moved the drugs category to below Industrial mats as that is the order you scroll down.

All seems to work fine, this is how mine looks now ArchV1... please tell me if this is wrong, I am a bit of a "fiddler" when it comes to things like this and have in the past "broken" stuff. :D

Brilliant thank you, I have really been trying to get my head around Elite, was too busy as a young married man when the first version came out on my Speccy, used the online trading tools and it made things too easy IMO also now not so reliable. Tried paper, but I have had a paperless office for many years now, this is perfect, ability to update commodity lists yourself is excellent.

Now go play the game and tweak it as and when you feel like it otherwise this will get too big.

I am going to get my small group to use this and when we meet up in a system in game we can exchange data, I think that would be in the spirit of Elite and add a bit more to the Coop multiplay/team play aspect.

@ArchV1 I've been using the tool a little today and have some suggestions for you (and questions).

Questions.
1. What does the "Mark Current" button do? All I can see is the age is set to NEW - is this what I can use for #4 suggestion below?

Suggestions
1. When adding stations, it would be nice to have a few more station options. (station type, blackmarket available?)
2. If blackmarket flag, make stations searchable to display the ones with a blackmarket.
3. The Data Entry Mode - Can this save the last position? I have two monitors and have to always move this to my elite monitor to quickly compare.
4. Age - button to update all age of station to current time. I used the data entry mode to quickly compare the differences, would like to update age to current when done.
5. On the Goods from / to screen - display the age of the two settings so we can judge which to use.
6. Add a general notes section, not station specific.

Some errors in the Commodity Data file:
1. "Personal Armour" was spelt without the U.
2. Under technology: "Advanced Catalysers" was missing
3. Under technology: the "Land Enrich sys" is not sorted. Needs to be after HE Suits.
4. Section "SLAVES" missing with options of:
4a. Imperial Slaves
4b. Slaves
5. Missing - BATTLE WEAPONS from the weapons section

Note, anyone renaming values in commodity data will have to do a find and replace in the system data file as well!

BUGS
1. When you add a new system/station the list of commodities is empty.

Even through I've only been to about 4 systems using it, I'm liking the look so far! Good Job!

Great job, I've looked at other tools, but this one matches what I most want out of Elite.

One suggestion, as some one pointed out that there is no way to record prices, I don't want to type amounts in, but I'd like to know if they sell above or below the average price. Demand does not indicate profit.

Something like the check box for demand high, med, low, and above average, below average, average.

This would make this perfect.

Thanks again. Please ignore me if you don't wish to add this.

Fly well.
