New Update Help

Hi

Not played for a while but thought I would get back into the old cockpit and give it a go since the new update.

I see there are loads of new features but I cant see anywhere that explains, clearly, what they do, how to use them ie different modes and the best was to set them up
on a HOTAS x52 pro.

Would be grateful for any help, advice or pointers.

Cheers

I would start by using the X52 default config. You only need to rebind "Enter FSS Mode" under "Full Spectrum Scanner" which is "Ä" as default on a QWERTZ keyboard. Another important bind is "Switch HUD Mode" under "Mode Switches", this allows you to switch between analysis and combat mode (you can only use weapons / scanners in the correct mode). Default binding for that is the left mouse click button on your throttle, but it's possible that your X52 software doesn't allow you to use it unless you configure it first.

Everything else should already work or be accessible under the ship functions tab in the right hand panel.

Using the FSS is self-explanatory once you managed to get in the FSS mode, I believe there even is a short tutorial.

PS
I use "Pinky + Deploy Hardpoints / Fire" to enter the FSS mode.

Analysis mode: basically which things you can shoot (weapons or scan/probes/mining), and an overlay that indicates mapped bodies. This is just a toggle.

FSS, Surface mapping. These are new modes, both of them you enter while throttled down in supercruise, normal flight controls are disabled, so there's very little overlap and you can re-use buttons from other modes. You need a key or button to enter FSS, surface mapping gets entered by using the trigger for a surface mapping probe. I actually use mouse for both, though I've got a joystick, and keyboard for tune up/down in FSS, but joystick will work, Whether you want them to match your normal flight control in terms of inversion is up to you, I tend to find when I'm controlling a turret type view I don't want it inverted, while flight controls I do. For mapping all you need mapped is fire and quit mapping. For FSS you'll want tune up/down (this can work nicely with paddle controls, but also for keys), zoom in/out and step zoom in/out. Step zoom is important because bodies close together can resist the auto-zoom.

There isn't a single game that uses HOTAS + Mouse and Keyboard that isn't VERY complicated and lengthy to setup. Add to that setting up voice attack (properly) and your looking at possible 1 to 3 days of playing and tweaking to get everything right. And I love every minute of it.
