Newcomer / Intro Newbie question - what just happened to me?

I was taking some cargo to Serberov Station, I requested docking permission, it was granted and I was asked to proceed to docking pad 21. I entered the station and saw pad 21 lit up, my compass was also directing me to 21. So I headed over there.

When I got within range of the pad I didn't get the landing radar, I checked this was definitely pad 21, it was. I checked my instructions were still go to pad 21, they were. I check I had hardpoints stowed and landing gear down. I did, but I just couldn't land. I could even place my ship down on the pad and still it wouldn't allow me to land. I decided to cancel my docking request in order to reapply, but when I reapplied my docking request was denied and I was given 10 seconds (or whatever it is) to get out of there. I set off for the exit as fast as I could but was shot down by the station's lasers just before I could escape out of the little slit.

So what did I do wrong?

Sounds like a bug. I have seen the landing hologram disappear, but never what you are explaining. You may want to submit a ticket.

Thanks will do, I just wanted to check I wasn't making some dumb error before doing so as I'm sure they'll be getting bombarded today with tickets from people who were just doing something wrong.

hmm seems all to be nice-docking request granted, pad ok, landing gear down-and no landing Radar? Strange...you were shoot because of blocking the pad, but why....? create a ticket...

Was your ship pointing the right way?

If the ship in the scanner isn't facing forward when you try to land it won't let you.

You have learnt the hard way something that has caught everyone out at one time or another - if you have to cancel a docking request leave the station and do it outside. Never cancel a request inside the station as it is a sure way to be shot at. There was a landing bug back in Beta that did what you describe but I haven't seen it since then. The holo does occasionally disappear but usually flicks back on again.

I reckon every time i have seen this it was because i was facing wrong direction, before cancelling docking exit the station and then repeat, but first if you see it again, rotate ship 180 degrees and try touching down again. It caught me out a few time this orientation with pad situation.

Worth a ticket though so they can take a quick look.

I presume I was facing the right direction... I had the docking pad number in front of me.

If it happens again I'll leave the station, cancel the request then go back in.

Every landing pad pretty much looks the same, though there are different sizes.

The forward position where the nose of the ship on landing should be, is facing towards the 'air traffic control' buildings. The tail end is where the big metal panel thing is (looks like a shield against engine blast). When you take off, the ship will rotate, and launch in the direction where the tail was upon landing.

If unable to land, try turning around 180 degrees with respect to the landing pad. Worst case, exit.. cancel docking, retry.

I have not seen the landing pad facing bug in quite a while (since gamma 1 I believe). However as of gamma 2.0.6 I have seen the pad indicator temporarily disappear and reappear when I get close. But it seems to be rather infrequent.

Right.. yeah i have had the dock glitch like that. However get out of the station again before you cancel the docking, in order to re-apply. Otherwise your inside without authorization.. and you going to have a bad time!

Pretty correct but Im not sure its a glitch or that's the way it works ?
Get out of the station before Re-Requesting Docking.....If your refused its as if you came in anyway ..... so you will have 10 seconds to get out.

Just get out and then request again.....When docking make sure your facing the right way.....Towards the buildings ....Hope that helps

It happened again, it's definitely nothing to do with the way I'm facing. I was facing the buildings in Serebrov, as I have been at every station I've visited so far, but when it happened again in Dalton, just for good measure I tried facing every way. I should point out (someone said earlier 'If the ship in the scanner isn't facing forward when you try to land it won't let you. ') that I'm not actually even getting the landing scanner, the ship just doesn't recognise the pad as a place it can land.

This time I left the station, cancelled the request, requested again (was given the same pad number) went back in and successfully landed. Not sure that I did anything differently the second time, maybe left it till I was a bit closer before deploying my landing gear but that is all. Also the hologram was flicking off and on, it seemed to go off whenever I deployed the landing gear.

For what it's worth, both these incidents were in Orbis stations. Also both times, system security were attacking someone as I was entering the station.

I haven't raised a ticket yet, too busy playing, but I will put both incidents on the ticket when I raise it.

Very weird. In the old days sometimes the landing pad was rotated 180 degrees. But since you said you tried every way, then that must be something else.
Weirdly enough I never had such problems. And no rotated landing pads since the start of gamma.

Could be a bit of server issues.

In beta we had sometimes hilarious behavious from the stations when the server had small hickups :p
But didnt saw them for a long time ^^

You are most likely facing the wrong way. Spin 180 degrees.

This is how to do it. +1 my friend for helping a noob. :)
welcome carlisle.

Were you facing the right direction? when I first started playing, I couldn't land and I found out it was because your ship has to be facing a particular way in order to land. You need to be facing the control tower, not the exhaust shield... or an easier way to tell is that when you lower yourself down and you get the display on your HUD of your ship over the pad, make sure that you are looking at the back end of your ship and not the side or the front. If you are not looking at the back end of your ship, rotate your ship around until you are and then try landing.

I occasionally see the "no dock" phenomenon as described above, and it seems to be in systems where there is a lot of player traffic; I attribute it to network load on the server handling local space. So far the 2nd try to dock after cancelling always has worked for me.

This happened to me once - like you I never got the closeup landing display on my HUD, and could not land even though it was the right pad, was facing the right way, etc. As was already suggested, when the countdown gets low leave the station FIRST, then cancel docking, then re-request docking, then try it again.

The ship traffic controllers at some of these stations are burnout cases with interesting chemicals in their bloodstreams, I'd wager!

That's okay, we were all new once...
I saw that some people forget to drop (or lower) their landing gear before landing, that is why the target radar may not show up.
