Newcomer / Intro Newcomer, intro and guidance

Just wanted to say Howdy all, just starting to learn the game and figuring out controller mappings etc. I'm playing with Xbox S controller on PC, hate flying with KBM and don't want to invest in HOTAS right now.

I'm usually the good guy/carebear in MMO's, I think I want to explore the pirate life this time...as in not griefing/ganking but actually in it for the credits.

What's the best way to learn to fly solo for now? I'm planning on joining an org or something in a month or two (can't be on comms right now due to odd living situation), but what's a good way to really get the hang of flying? I've done the tutorials several times and I think I have most of the real basic stuff, looking to become an actual decent pilot with a pvp focus.

Thanks!

I see many complaints that piracy doesn't pay very well. I don't know from experience as I couldn't even contemplate role-playing such scum. ;)

There is a thread on this sub-forum for a fight club - they meet up once a week I think for PvP shenanigans - see if that tickles your fancy.

Beyond that, if you really want to test your PvP skills go hang around a community goal system or one of the engineers (Deciat seems most ripe) - but be warned you really do need to be engineered for much PvP. (I don't do any, can't help.)

There are a few (very few) RP pirates around the forums, but what I gather from their comments, PvP crime doesn't pay. Closest you might get to is to hang out in Community Goal (CG) systems and acquire CG cargo from other players. Just be aware that it can be very difficult to obtain cargo from a player who doesn't want you to get it - even if they don't log on you.

PvE piracy is much easier, but also of marginal profitability compared to other occupations. From my own (Horizons only) experience, once you are allied with a local faction (or choose to do business with a less than lawful faction), you may be offered well paying missions of dubious legality - pretty similar to the classic piracy, where pirates would get a letter of marque from one government (or trade orgainsation) in order to harrass the competition.
These may be simply missions to transport a wanted criminal (which means you'll be shot if the station security scans you) or some illegal goods (not quite as bad) or retrieve data from places where you shouldn't be. Also on the menu are hit jobs - from "known pirates" via "terrorists" to "deserters" and "venerable generals".
If you dive deeper into these depths, you will find jobs to "liberate" items from other ships - documents, cargo or people, e.g. diplomats (although the latetr also usually come in the shape of cargo containers). Criminal factions will often cut the sweettalk and ask you to steal specific items.

Whatever you want to do and wherever you want to go - Ethaidan and Para gave some very good advise regarding the engineers. With an unengineered ship (and especially flying with a controller), you may see some success against regular NPCs. Higher level NPCs, especially wings and definitely whatever you match up against in a Combat Zone (CZ) will wipe the floor with you. Go against an experienced player, and you won't even have the time to say "what the f...".

PvP players are usually free with training and advice, though. You also might, for starters, want to check out the Galactic Academy Discord (link at the top of this page).

Oh yes, the controller may not be the best choice. It's kind of ok - but you'll want to use either kb+m or a full grown HOTAS/HOSAS setup wtih extra buttons. The amount of controls you can bind in ED is simply insane. For starters, you get full 6 DOF.

Welcome to the Elite Galaxy commander!

You've probably already found most of the resources listed below. If not, have a look at them and in any case don't hesitate to ask questions here in the forum.

In-game help is available in the form of menu links to the Pilot's Handbook and the Codex (right-hand cockpit panel 1st tab).
For a very good beginner's guide see: An in-depth beginner’s guide to Elite: Dangerous.
Tutorials covering all aspects of the game, many of them in the form of YouTube videos, are available from ED Tutorials.
There is a wealth of useful information available in these forums spread out over hundreds of threads. Thanks to commander @Alec Turner you can access all of that information and more via a single thread: Alec's best of the forum (and elsewhere) [v2].
Here is a good guide on the background simulation (BGS) that simulates the economical and political changes caused by player actions in inhabited systems.
Also check out the inara.cz and eddb.io websites with (almost) realtime info on practically everything in the game.
The coriolis.io and edsy.org websites let you design your ships before buying them.
There are many more Tools and Websites created by fans that make life in the galaxy better.
And last but not least, the Elite Dangerous Wiki contains extensive information on nearly all aspects of the game.
