Next gen consoles

Marrying games to consoles is the quickest way to limit yourself. You have to develop for the lowest common denominator. It isn't simply about "graphics" settings. That is oversimplifying it. There is much more to these consoles than the GPU (which for the original PS4 and XBOX are pathetic by today's standards). I think the other huge limiting feature of both current gen consoles is their CPU. The old AMD architecture running at sub 2Ghz was horrible back when it was release and is infinitely more so by today's standards. This factor could be very limiting when implementing AI features on a massive scale to fill a space station or planet with life in a believable fashion. I think No Man's Sky is a perfect example of this limitation. The creature count is limited at any given time, and their AI is completely unbelievable. I don't think that's because Hello Games are incapable of providing a more immersive experience, I think it's because they are limited by consoles.

FDev should make the release of the next pay for content next gen and PC only and hold nothing back! Go all out, and build an amazing experience. This is for the base that cares enough to put money into gaming. I'd build my marketing plan around those who aren't afraid to spend. Oh, and don't try to say everyone isn't rich enough to buy the next gen console or a new PC. Cut out going to the bar (or pub or strip club) every weekend and watch your spending. You'd be amazed how much extra cash you'll have for a new console or PC in one year. And, if you don't have an income, well, what are you doing playing games!?!?

Do you know the minimum PC requirements for Elite? I believe I've posted them in post 2 of this thread.
Anyway, if atmospheric planets for example are too demanding for the current generation they could still make parts of the update available for PS4/Xbone.

It makes no sense whatsoever for Frontier to leave the original consoles behind

I’m not so sure. Consider that Elite’s PC userbase dwarfs console by even the most conservative estimates. Does anyone know what it costs FDev to maintain console support? Think servers, any royalties to MS and Sony, tech support workers, etc.

FDev’s public financial reports don’t go into that level of detail. So while the company and franchise are performing strongly, it may be that the consoles are underperforming. Maybe FDev thinks the cost isn’t worth the effort. Remember that FDev dropped Apple at one point, so there is precedent.

Either way only FDev knows the answer and they ain’t telling us. :)

I’m fine with the idea that the next DLC should be for next gen consoles only, and I say that freely as an XB1 player. But FYI: Console usage for most people isn’t about money. It’s about convenience.

Most gamers are not tech savvy enough to do their own upgrades on a PC, or can’t be bothered. A console is “plug-and-play.” That is all.

Similarly, FDev is probably going to be very careful about how their DLC effects existing PC specs as well. Imagine the uproar, the literal mountains of madness, if FDev managed to force a hardware upgrade on say... 1 in 10 PC players. Wooo boy.

Made a thread about this in the PS4 section a while back. As even the PS5 will have backwards compatibility next gen, the question becomes will we get another version of ED on the PS5. One would hope that if they went from PS4 to 5 a simple update from the devs would improve the game in all areas for PS5 users.

However, we all know that's not how game development and marketing works these days...

If they did that they would be losing loads of customers to NMS and games like it as they already have walking around on atmospheric planets.

As for not leaving tech behind the specs of ED have crept up over the years and fdev is not below cutting a whole branch of hardware off (can we say Mac) due to tech constraints.

I did say many moons ago that I wouldn't be surprised if they were waiting for next gen and that carriers are to keep people interested in the ED franchise but if they purposely cut old consoles in favour of just released ones it will annoy a huge amount of their customers and cause some severe backlash and bad publicity.

Well, if Frontier don't make a PS5 version, I'll just have to go out and buy a PC.

Addiction sux.....

.....but the kids ain't gonna feel that way.

When the 2018 paid content (widely suspected to be atmospheric planets) was put back to late 2020, when by a curious coincidence the next generation of consoles would be launching, the obvious suspicion was that it was because Frontier couldn't make the tech work on the current generation of consoles. In which case what we'll get in 2020 will not be available on the current generation of consoles, and perhaps some older PCs will also be left in the dust.
The Illuminati and FD are in cahoots.

Yeah mate. Consoles are for losers and PC gamers are champions. You're cool. 🤔

How do I turn off the profanity filter to give the correct response to this?

I can not imagine that Frontier does not provide the backward compatibility with previous versions of PS.
Robert A. Rankin, who was professor of mathematics at Glasgow University when I was studying there, wrote in his famous book (well, famous if you were studying mathematics at Glasgow University almost half a century ago) An Introduction to Mathematical Analysis:

"This is not so much a proof as a confession of lack of imagination."

I had to google him but noticed he lectured number theory. That was the only exam I failed at university - (Edinburgh University Mathematics graduate 2007). Not that you needed to know that lol.

Top tip..

Just buy a PC.

That console will be at least 500USD/£

For that money you can buy most of a good PC and anything extra costs is paid off in the fact you only have to swap parts every few years instead of waiting for 6-10 years for the company to build another console
Sure. let me just migrate my xbox cm......

Oh.

Right.

My guess is the current consoles won't be supported going forward.

After certain hours of space madness, you start to pick up so many compromises frontier have made.. unexpected differences in quality.. which can only be explained by performance issues / targets for consoles. Having first hand experience even seeing the ps4 pro struggle sometimes...

Frontiers my way or the highway approach + only maintaining one version of a game or bust makes me guess this generation of consoles is gone (or left the same) next year.

Though frontier are a growing company. They're trying arx, learning new things in game design with their park builders etc, so maybe this is the first time they'll be going to school on multiple console generations + live service so see what they do.
