No imagination from FD on new ship design!

I think FD felt like they had to deliver the primised 30 ships by the end of season 1, so they had to rush things and cut corners to meet the deadline, resulting in the new ships mainly being close to pre existing ones. I have nothing against iterative versions of existing ships, but I do hope FD still have plans for original designs in the future. The ship tier below the Asp is quite full, with many ships sporting 2 c1 and 2 c2 hardpoints or something close to that. the Anaconda tier is now covered with Corvette and Cutter, I feel we now need more competitors in the Vulture/Clipper/FAS tier...

I think the new ships are fine in term of design. Sure the cutter would have been a bit cooler if it looked a bit more sharpish.

On the other hand, I hope FD uses the opportunity of using the Alliance to introduce a new "brand" of designs. I would love
to see asymmetrical ships, or ships with triangle (order-3) symmetry, instead of the flat designs.
Or pointy fighters like the Veygr fighters in homeworld 2.

Yes the only thing that was fresh imho was the Corvette, pity because at the moment ships are the only reward the game has. Hopefully missions will get the love that was hinted at for 1.5, so perhaps playing to support your faction will be a little more rewarding.

The Corvette looks nothing like the Anaconda. Farragut sure but the Anaconda? No way.

Are you being honest here? When I saw the Fed corvette I though I was looking at the Anaconda for a moment before realizing its a different ship. Saying it looks NOTHING like it, is abit over exaggerated isn't it?

But for the OP, yeah the keelback looks like the asp with that same canopy.
and the other ships are just "improvements and/or adjustments" to current ships. I'm glad they did finally finish up the ships, but I sure do hope they will have much more ships in the future.

If you look at past Elite games having variants is pretty common nothing unoriginal about it. I would also like to point out that at the minimum the reason they released all the ships they did for this particular patch was to fill the gaps all along the spectrum. We are getting passenger ships in Horizons as well as larger trading ships. Both sets of those ships still need a bit more ground work before properly adding them to the game makes sense. They need to refine the mission system for the passenger ships and then add in the launch bay stuff for fighters for the larger trade ships. Why add more ships that will collect dust like the Orca when they can add in several ships all over the spectrum that are going to see immediate use. FD has access to all the info about the player base. Adding all the lower tier ships is an indicator that there is probably a need or want for more ships at that end of the spectrum and the addition of Corvette/Cutter is bulking up the other end. The middle class of ships is pretty well rounded with a lot of specialty ships and several multirole ships.

Well coming from some one who said the Keelback looks like an Asp instead of a Type-6 I have to wonder.

I mean, they are all based on existing ships already. They could really just be named viper1, 2... Conda 1,2... T6 1, 2... Anaconda 1.2 (Corvette)...

Can we name this thread generic moan thread you just moan about the samething? moan thead1, 2... yawn!

Seriously sorry for the sarcasm but I don't really understand where you are coming from? There's a lot of variation in the ships when your actually flying them sound, looks and handling wise.

The only true original ship of 1.5 is the Corvette. The rest are modified models of older ships. The Cutter I don't like the front nose much.

I think you hit the nail on the head here. So long as FD do still keep giving us the odd ship going forward I am OK with this but I can't lie, I am disappointed ships like imp eagle count and do wish the cobra 4 etc were a little more imaginative

In a more serious vein - I love we are getting versions/similar feel. I am looking forward to the cockpit of the Asp Scout, the cobra 4 seems a little beast and the imperial cutter best of all (I love the quirks of the imperial ships!!).

FD - doing a great job!

edit - I love the Imp eagle and fly it regularly in stealth mode.

Not sure what to say about the Keelback looking like an Asp

I like how the Cutter is a step in between the Clipper in the front the the Majestic sternwards

Okay, let's do a round of ships that look like Banana's, or fruit in general.
You'd still be mad though, right?

Look at it regarding car design, they all kinda look like each other even if estate, saloon or sports. Kinda how the ships in ED work.

I still want an Asp with big spoilers suited for a recon role, kinda like the DBX regards heat...only dreams though.

Ships will always look similar to those that came before. True originality only comes if from something new, like Alien ships...or a new ship designer.

I also get the feeling that to meet the 30 ship promise, lets just modify the existing ships a little and.. there 30 ships.

And also, super disappointed that there still are not Alliance ships / Ranks

I agree, that's exactly what I'm thinking

Having variants is important. in combat knowing the identity of the ship you face is a key element. Adding variants and similar silhouettes adds uncertainty to combat. Combine this with materials and synthesis and combat has a few more variables.

For me the disappointing thing is that instead of reworked models of existing designs, we could (should?) have had other ships like the Krait, Panther Clipper, Puma, Moray, Tiger Trader, Lion and Constrictor for example, that could have been used to fill much the same roles as the smaller ships coming. The Corvette and Cutter are ok, but the others should really have been from these alternative ships I think.
