No new ships conspiracy thread

Balance is a big reason.

Ship attributes are arbitrary. There is no coherent system behind it and no internal consistency, never really has been. It's not like reality, or Space Engineers, etc, where the constraints of the underlying systems enforce a balance of their own, so they have to be individually balanced against everything else...which hasn't been going well with only the ships they've got.

The game also has many other areas in need of attention and selling broken ships for a broken game may well not bring in enough revenue to justify the effort.

170 ships??? Wow, I definitely need to give SC a go during the next free fly. Hey, I have a question, and believe it or not it is on topic to this thread (see my last post). Does SC have NPCs flying around in those 170 ships? Like I said about Elite, I don't personally need to own even seven ships, let alone 170, but being a universe where I can encounter 170 ships (flown by NPCs) really tickles my fancy.

And when I say "flying around", I mean general air traffic like Elite models around stations.

The state of the AI for the NPCs in SC is to say it lightly... a bit lacking... supposedly all those issues will be fixed after they improve their networking code (the infamous server meshing tech). However, flying all those ships in SC really feels much more satisfying than in ED.

First of all, every ship has really a different character and they all fly different (different mass ratios, no silly yaw speed limitation, true inertia, atmospheric flight, etc.), and also, since there's not a lot of customization for the ships (in the way of ED modules), each ship really feels like it's been truly made for the job (you know, like irl you won't use a truck to go on a hike).

And another cool thing is that since you can rent them for a very low amount (compared to what you can make doing missions), you can basically test them all and then, decide the one you like more and purchase that one (to all the people saying SC only sells ships and jpgs, that's a lie, 90% of the (obviously implemented) ships can be acquired in game with the in game currency).

Cobra MK4 for me

In other news - i joined Elite at the end of November 2018... No ships is normal state for me
Cant say i need more ships, but i do know that i want a CM4

PS> if the new ships are Crusader / Asp Scout level, they will get a lot of flak, even tho people would get "new ships" 😂
Simply because people dont want new ships, they want better ships - power creep at its best.

Not everyone (I purposefully fly 'worse' ships). I like the idea of different ships, so I agree that new ships that are just slight tweaks of existing ships (like those Alliance ships) don't interest me at all.

I'd love to see the Boa, Gecko, and some of the other old-timers realized in the modern schema of Elite Dangerous. And as I said above, I don't even need to be able to fly them - just to encounter them in space would be really cool IMO.

I fully support you on the Cobra IV.
Also, while the Crusader and AspS are terrible ships, the Mamba, Krait II and Krait Phantom are great ships, so much so that I almost can't believe the same company made both the two turds and those three gems. Yet did neither the Mamba invalidate the FdL, nor did the two Kraits invalidate the Python or each other. They are variants, appealing to a different audience and with slightly different weight on the actiities they are suited for best.

I will not go there by saying they're terrible ship.

My XB account got Elite in combat flying a Crusader built for Scouts.
Solid, stable and nice to fly - it had an ax mc turret and 3 gausses, it was my rail trainer :)

Edit: And it was named: Rarity (a pun for it's state in the game, but also a reference to the MLP character)

They sell 170 ships. Many are not in game though and cannot be flown by you or AI. It's where the "selling JPGs" meme came from as in many cases you basically just have a concept picture. Some have been sold years ago and are not in game yet...

You're forgetting to mention that anything NOT bought with real life cash gets periodically wiped, including ships purchased in game.

There's actually only about 90 and most are a rip off (sales description doesn't match actual specs = blatant lie).
Ive had an SC account since before computers were invented, well it seems that long ago.
SC will really make you appreciate ED, good luck not dying by getting out of bed, walking, or my favorite the tram track not rendering!

Then add in the scum that camp surface mining spots, oh and forget one ship being able to multi task as that would mean less ship sales ;)

So why does Drew Wagar think SC is far more fun than Elite these days?

Only one star though.... oof...

Variety, the spice of life. A little perspective: I keep 31 ships, some repeating models, but always a different build, a different idea behind it. One for speed, VR sightseeing, combat, reverski, mining, cargo, pax, exploration, an SRV warehouse ship (for Pomeche canyon racing), pirate ship, axi ship, squad drop ship. Some people like a constant work in progress and swap parts. Not me, I try to complete a ship to it’s best and optimal to never touch it with the wrench again, so I can grab it and go when the bell tolls.

So, I’ve gone through most of the stock, looked at ships from different angles, and there are only a very small number of ships that belong in the scrapyard, usually by virtue of the environment they were ‘born’ in. Also, I am sure it’s all subjective. There’s someone, somewhere who thinks I am an idiot for branding hauler a trash ship. I am sure it brings visual pleasure and just works flawlessly for someone out there. So, I wouldn’t burden with arbitrary balance considerations and just make a lot more ships, in parallel with other important works Fd is currently doing.

Some ships are very good at what they do. FdL, Anaconda, Kraits, Viper. That’s fine too. Don’t strip them. Let them be role models for future ships. I don’t mind having stuff left on the cutting floor as long as the work goes on.

Didn't I say the naysayers would show up shortly ? :)

Variety, flavor, something new to engineer and pimp with ARX that looks and feels slightly differently while doing the same old task. 1-3 new ships per year would be plenty already and would still take years until we even get to 50 total.
That argument doesn't hold water. There are already virtually an infinite number of variations you can make in the ships. Once youve done the task a couple of times in your new ship, you'll be asking for more.
