"No plans to port Elite Dangerous to PS5"

In theory it should be more straightforward. As you are focused on one fixed specification although we actually have a few variations now in both Xbox and PlayStation models.

The current generation of consoles make it more time consuming although as this thread is all about we are still potentially going to be stuck in BC mode on the PS5 which hamstrings the hardware.

Ultimately it should still be less work doing consoles than doing PC optimisation which has such a wide variation in hardware.

My worry is the Jaguar CPU of the last gen consoles which to be honest was past its sell by date when the consoles launched will struggle.
You’re not quite right: Microsoft implemented easy backwards compatibility for Xbox One X / Xbox Series X which is why you can play ED on Xbox in 4K HDR but only 1080P on PS4/PS5. In order to upgrade the PS5 it’s more a major rewrite, but it certainly should be done.

... XBox already had a 4K mode on their “equivalent” of the previous-gen “pro” model ... that’s why the current-gen models get 4K in backwards-compatibility mode ...

So, has frontier answered any of the questions that were being asked about console somewhere and I missed it, or did they just say they were aware of their poor communication with us as a way of telling us its intentional?

We have heard nothing on console apart from what's in the roadmap.

I don't even think the poor communication comment was aimed at consoles specifically. Just general I believe.

So no. 😟

Our community have always been the beating heart of Elite Dangerous and we take the feedback very seriously. We are going to be working on new plans and initiatives that we can do to bring you even more in touch with our development progress. Starting with a monthly community update, we will highlight and share the progress that the development team have been making over that month. We will be sharing more details around this, and other initiatives, over the coming weeks.

What can we glean from this statement, that is specific to the topic of this thread?

  • Do we think that this monthly community update will contain any information that is specific to consoles? (I don't)
  • Is there any evidence that they have taken the 80 pages of feedback about this topic seriously up until now? (no)
  • Do we think any of the communication plans Frontier have will address the lack of information and list of unanswered questions about the forthcoming console release of Odyssey? (no)
  • Will they address the concerns PS5 players have about the lack of a current-gen version of Odyssey, with the PS5 version being hobbled far more than the XBox version, due to previous limitations around the PS4 Pro? (no)

Simple PR and damage control.

Right, so them saying they know they don't communicate, then continuing to do so is kind of like a snide insult, the type of thing that might start fights in a pub.

"Hey, sorry I keep stepping on you foot."
maintains eye contact, steps on foot again

Personally, with all this issues going on, I don't believe that Odyssey will be released on consoles, especially ps4.

More like CP2077, they wanted to release it on ps4, but can't make it work on it, seems only for ps4 pro will be released.

No big deal(for me), but it raises questions about Elite Horizons for ps4/xbox.
If they will not manage to make Odyssey work on older gen consoles, will they still keep Horizons for us?! That sounds like running 2 separate games, and that's not something that sounds viable... 🙄

The thing that kills me about all of that is that graphically, from what I've seen in people's youtubes, it looks much less demanding than gta5 did on ps3! I can't wrap my head around this and it frustrates me because it makes me think they're just inept, which I don't want to belive

Have you realised the timings that are being alluded to?

  • Update 3 – Thursday 10th June
    • Many improvements and fixes, including
    • Loadout UI flow changes
    • Adding earned ARX for on-foot gameplay
  • Update 4 – Thursday 17th June
    • Many improvements and fixes, including
    • Suit Livery UI flow changes
    • Codex CMDR stats
  • Update 5 – Thursday 24th June
    • Many improvements and fixes, including
    • Shared missions
    • Galaxy & system map UI updates
    • Outfitting UI updates
then:
'... We are going to be working on new plans and initiatives that we can do to bring you even more in touch with our development progress. Starting with a monthly community update....'

so likely:
1) Monthly update 1 - End of July (not too close to the previous Update 5 communications) - will probably be an summary of updates 3, 4 & 5. Wont mention anything that is still broken.
2) Monthly update 2 - End of August (could well align with whatever they were already planning on doing for the Annual 'present something at Gamesconn - Germany' session) - PR console launch video.
3) Monthly update 3 - End of September (As this is now into Autumn 2021, I would expect this to be pretty much the launch scope - will probably be a couple of talking heads from lead developers saying that they are delighted that they will be able to bring Odyssey to consoles - wont actually reveal anything about console specific features, wont mention things that have been ruled out from being ready for launch.
4) Monthly update 4 - End of October (post go-live pat of back - will ignore defects)

The 'roadmap' as listed aint up to much.

FD's track record on optimising code isn't really in question,I ran ED on a potato for a few years. Up to this point I haven't seen anything that shouldn't be able to run on a PS4,it's still early days and we're In reality still in beta.

<sigh> i'm so weary of it all, which makes me sad, as i used to love this game. I still care enough to observe and comment (re: why dont you just leave then).

This is kinda the heart of the matter. If they instead said they were going to implement a cultural change around communication, implementing x, y, and z, it would be encouraging.
I took they acknowledge we think they think they dont communicate enough so will operate as before, but be more frequent in their messages out.

As for the actual statement:
Our community have always been the beating heart of Elite Dangerous
= Customers pay monies for game and ARX.

and we take the feedback very seriously.
= we can ignore the forums / reddit, but negative reviews on Steam / mainstream media which tank share prices are bad.

We are going to be working on new plans and initiatives that we can do
= we are going to hold meetings to talk about damage control.

to bring you even more in touch with our development progress.
= probably reboot "dev diaries"

Starting with a monthly community update, we will highlight and share the progress that the development team have been making over that month.
= aka a "dev diary" with just community managers bullet-pointing what the devs just did in updates and patches

We will be sharing more details around this, and other initiatives, over the coming weeks.
= plus talking about things we may / not do, no dates no promises
