No Single Player offline Mode then?

I think I've paid plenty already, need to save my pounds for a new flight stick, GFX card and an Occulus Rift ;-)

That is assuming the freezing issue gets fixed (which I am sure it will)

I wan't an offline mode for when I travel, connectivity even here in blighty is not 100%

It's not exactly as if you won't find any other benefit from the hardware, is it?

It doesn't matter.
It automatically serves the same purpose as DRM when implemented, since the game won't function without it being validated and connected to a remote server all the time.

If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck.

Not all the time, from time to time. Constant is not correct, yes very often but get your "facts" right please.

No, if it verifies you as a paying consumer before allowing access - then it's DRM. If it just allows anyone to connect without requiring that authentication that it's a paid copy then it's not because it won't be a method of controlling the copyright.

It looks better than this graph at about 11:30 today. Someone getting nervous?

Ahh I see you've opted for the 1 day graph.

If you check the 5 day, you'll see the stock price is higher than it was 5 days ago and against a month ago it's still an upward trend.

Please don't cherry pick for your arguments

There is no extra hassle, no 3rd party DRM site to verify my password with. I just log on, with valid commander credentials, and enjoy the knowledge that freeriders and crackers are having a hard time messing with the game. It means a griefer can be sanctioned, and has to worry about consequences to their account.

Heck, your type of no-DRM MMO sounds like a horrible idea.

I'm just pointing out that always-on requirement does NOT necessarily mean it's DRM...which seems to be a crutch of the argument for the people who keep linking to the DRM wiki page.

Of course it's very simple to tie the two together once you have the always-on part in place but not a necessity. I'm not currently playing E:D until it reaches final release so I can't remember off the top of my head whether it does require that verification at the moment (or if it will do at final release)

EDIT: Double clicked on the icon to check and it does ask for email/pw combination which links it to a paid account which is DRM... for my downloaded copy - whether that requirement is removed on the physical copies in the future would be whether it is still DRM-free or not, imo that wouldn't be a difficult change to implement.

I have resisted posting in this thread as the off-line mode is not a big issue for me. I have good internet connection and no problem with the online game. I won't express an opinion on Frontier's decision or the manner of its announcement which I know have got so many people angry. The anger may be justified (although the content of some of the posts may not be!) but I want to speculate on the nature of an off-line option if one could be created. (Sorry if this has been said, I haven't been through all 400 posts!)

My point is that ED offline would not be the game we expect to be seeing after 16th December.

Even with big hard drives I don't think the 400 billion star galaxy could be held on a local system. We would be playing a subset of the full game, possibly no bigger than the volume of space we have now or even the pill we had in Beta 2. The bulletin board missions would be limited in variety and would begin to get a bit same-y after a while. The economy could not be dynamically active, except in a very limited way and it might be necessary to have random elements generated within it to avoid it becoming entirely predictable. The political situation, similarly, would be fairly static, although the game could contain some pre-generated scenarios which the player could get involved in. The chances of including walk-around-your ship or land-on-planets modules would be slim.

In other words, the game might become stale and predictable which is the last thing any of us would want.

I am 61 years old, I played the original BBC version and I said when I joined the Beta that ED would probably be the last significant computer game purchase I would make. I don't know how many years of playing I have left (I bought the lifetime expansion pass, but I won't ask for a refund if I drop dead tomorrow!) but I want to know that whenever I stop there was more out there which I never saw. If I have to pay a subscription to keep the servers running until then, I will.

I sympathise with those of you who feel you have been cheated out of something you were promised, but it may be that you won't see a true off-line version until our desktop computers are all equipped with quantum processors, programmed with David Braben's personality matrix and superfast ultra-broadband (or whatever they call the next stage) is everywhere.

DRM is virtually a necessity with a independent studio, piracy hurts a lot more when you have to crowd source your game.
It would be insane for people not to use DRM

Really sad this is gonna be my first post on the forum, this truly is a great game, but I am not interested in being tied down by a game always on DRM. I travel alot, and I'm always at sea were I have no internet... So who do I contact to get my refund? Cause if I just wasted $60 on a promised offline mode, and I can't play my game most of the time, I would rather spend my money on a game I actually can play. And I have to go cancel my expensive as fudge flight stick as well....

You were gonna bring your HOTAS on an actual real life ship and pretend fly a space ship?

That was never the case. The intended play experience for the game has always been online. We had hoped to support offline in a cut down version as well, but that hasn't proved possible.

Michael

I mean this with respect and no malice.

It is a real shame that you and FDEV didn't promote and market the offline feature as just a hope or if we can from the get go, this would have if not prevented this uproar at least greatly reduced it. And from a personal perspective I wouldn't need to be agnosing over asking for a refund or not, as I'd not of bought into Premium beta.
