No Single Player offline Mode then?

You could also leave your house tomorrow and be hit by a bus and no longer be able to play Elite. If you bought the game and get to play it for a few years or more (with no monthly subscription ) before the game is shut down, then I would say you got your moneys worth. There are plenty of single player games that cost the same or more then Elite that are over after 40-50 hours.

Nailed it.

Diablo 3 - no OFFLINE mode -more than 10 mln sold. Possible? Of course it is

It would appear Diablo 3 appeals to peeps in the developed world with modern internet ISP's whereas, going by this thread, Elite Dangerous appeals to those in North Korea.

SimCity is a perfect example....Force all to Online....first offline it is not possible....Finally they did. Also for the "We want depth&Content Group" SimCity have there also FAil, because they annoce a Perfect Simulation, but we know what we get..... That why I never buy an EA Game from EA anymore....but who cares what I buy.....

Oh, really?
I just want to put this out there. The FCC produced a map of broadband availability in the USA.

All places shown in red are populated areas without at least 3Mbps down. Most of them have much less than even that.

I, fortunately, live in a very green area with 100Mbps and soon with options to go up to a gig. However, my neighbors across the river are struggling with DSL.

Hello everyone,

Just a quick one to remind everyone to be good to each other on these forums. I'm all for intelligent debate, but I'm not happy with people insulting each other.

Please understand that the moderators don't have access to this information before it is released, so they can't be held accountable for any decisions that have or haven't been made by Frontier. Any abusive messages aimed their way will be dealt with accordingly.

Cheers,

Ed

you tell em Ed ...
by the way please feel free to ignore this very vocal, very small and also very short sighted minority.

I'm sure when they pause to take a breath they will realize there is no way Frontier could release a game that doesn't at the very least log on and verify it's user's identity when they play.
no one want's this game to be pirated all over the net and a fully offline game would enable this in a heart beat.

They'd be doing us a service. Many of places have far better internet than any country in western europe.

Imagine for a moment you had not only to deal with whatever local internet issues you found troubling, but those of over half a dozen international submarine cables and around the pacific and atlantic as well. Brrr! That sounds scary. I'm glad nobody has to put up with that.

Trying to sort the wheat from the chaff

The problem is that the galaxy mechanics all sit on the online servers. The data set and processes are huge and not something that would translate offline without considerable compromise to the vision. Trust me we didn't sit down and think what would annoy people the most! It's a choice we've had to make and so we've taken it.

Michael

I have spent the last hr or so reading posts on this subject in a number of threads so my apologies if i have missed recent posts.

I have tried not to post anything negative regarding this testing process, yes i have had issues but tried to be constructive not dismissive.

With due respect to you Mr Brookes the quote above is actually a problem for Frontier to solve and not those that have "bought into the vision" of Elite Dangerous. Frontier have stated that there will be an Offline version of the game , ie no internet required to play it. People that have backed the game and continued to test it "Online" as testers do were quite happy to find bugs/issues happy in the knowledge that come release they could unplug the internet and play.

From my view point Elite Dangerous has been trailed as Elite (1984) updated for (2014) hence the 30 yr celebration. I would guess the vast majority of Kickstarters Alpha backers are people that played the original. They want the game to be PvP and PvE for todays generation and years to come but they want it also to be what is was 30 yrs ago, offline and single pilot doing what they want to do. If that means Frontier need to make 2 games within 1 then thats what they have to do.

Give people the experience they backed with hard cash and time testing dont forget we all want this game to be a success.

Hats off to the Devs for what they have given us, this is not a moan at them or you Mr Brookes, just an honest observation.

People thinking different seeds etc.. are wrong. Why do it? It is 100% offline the shipped game.

You would need a different seed for every single copy of the offline single player game. Everyone would have to have their own content-unique world. If the offline static game used the same seed for everyone then all it would take is one player to plaster it all over the internet and YouTube that the Thargoids are located at such and such, that Raxxla is at coordinates so and so, and reveal any other nuggets of info they've either datamined from their saved game or descovered directly. That kind of thing could be disaterous from a sales point of for a game that is priding itself on the unknown. Not to mention spoiling it for many players!

The more I think about it the more an offline mode seems to be a pandoras box.

There are two trolls in particular in this thread, (I won't name them, but they know who they are), who need to stop acting like the local village idiot for a few seconds and gracefully bow out of this discussion.

There are legitimate concerns being discussed in this thread and your continual arrogant, condescending and patronising stick poking is only making you look like fools.

Right now it looks like I will stay here until Monday.
Then, when the current emontions have settled down a little, I will decide whether or not I will ask a refund for the game, at least the parts that I purchased in the store.
It depends on the reaction from Frontier to all of this.
If I will ask for a refund I will say goodbye here and I doubt that you will read from me after that ever again.

Have faith Windsaw.

Online is the future....you seen Steam or gamer reviews?

An online function is a rating staple now and online only games are increasing day by day.

Get used to it....and...I'm not being flippant.

You're probably a damn site better at Elite than me....stick with it.

Just so i can get my head around this and act in time (if i need too). I've not been in the testing stage so don't have the game, but i paid for the Kickstarter all expansions edition.

Now the game is available from 16.12.14

Does that mean that even if i don't download it, if i haven't put in my refund request by 15.12.14 (or before the game is available for me to download) i still won't qualify for a refund?

With the lack of clear comment on situation about Single Player Off line mode after this latest newsletter, i can feel a number of people getting stuck in red-tape land.

So as someone that got involved because of the Single Player off line mode (i only play off-line games or games that don't require constant online access, Minecraft etc) and will not be able to use a product that requires always online or intermittent online at the games chosing, should i put in my request for a refund now before i hit that legal red tape 'get out of jail for FD' zone?

This is all very very gutting.

The offline thing isn't a make or break deal for me, but phrases in the Newsletter about things being left on the cutting room floor concern me greatly. The DDA has been the stick used for a long time to thump anyone that questioned the development schedule and what we saw in-game as a feature list and to just sit back, shut up, and be patient. Is it still that? Which of the myriad features listed therein that are not present and which won't all be available at full release will just fade to the cutting room floor?

And no, I don't want my money back. I want a game I thought to be the most visionary I'd seen in many years to reach those goals and descriptions, and not be hobbled by a rushed release and negative reviews.

OK, I've had enough of this. People who have no clue whatsoever of how the internet works, complain about the location of hosting (because geographical distance is, like, really important for an electronic network, much more than whether the server is perched right on top of the massive transatlantic trunk line, like, say, Ireland is), complain about their game needing to occasionally go online to exchange less data than it took to load up this webpage and post their complaint. Because they want to play this game on a train (which is a perfect spot for a dogfighting sim, sure).

Learn how computers work, then adjust your expectations.
