No Single Player offline Mode then?

You could also leave your house tomorrow and be hit by a bus and no longer be able to play Elite. If you bought the game and get to play it for a few years or more (with no monthly subscription ) before the game is shut down, then I would say you got your moneys worth.
I get my moneys worth of I get what I was promised.

Look, I know what you are saying and I can understand your viewpoint.
But as it is, I draw a very strict line between what I purchase and what I lease. Especially the things where I am involved in emotionally, I always purchase, because I can't stand other people to be able to control the things I pay them money for.
This may sound strange to some of you (especially the younger ones) but this is how I tick. To me this isn't limited to games. I spend money for something, I want to own it. Sometimes it is unavoidable not to, but I take care that this happens as little as possible.
There are plenty of single player games that cost the same or more then Elite that are over after 40-50 hours.
But I can play them again.
And often I do.
In fact I consider every game that I do not want to play again not necessarily a mispurchase, but not a very good one.

I'm sure when they pause to take a breath they will realize there is no way Frontier could release a game that doesn't at the very least log on and verify it's user's identity when they play.
no one want's this game to be pirated all over the net and a fully offline game would enable this in a heart beat.

Then surely Frontier should have realised this sooner than us and told us well before today?

I feel the same. I feel awful that they had to announce that today, and I feel disgusted by the really genuinely nasty comments aimed at David Braben and the company. Some nasty people on here alright, I hope they get their refund and disappear to be honest.

There isn't a single title of the last ten years that I could have played without an internet connection to learn how to get the damn thing working, regardless of DRM or anything else. It's kind of a given.

What we are dealing with here is an extreme sense of entitlement. People seem to think that because they paid for a fraction of the development cost of something (not the final product mind you) they are absolutely and 100% entitled to call the shots on the whole process. To think that is the case it is ridiculous at best.

Fronting some money to a company that has a "plan" on something as volatile as is a computer program is no riskier than participating in the stockmarket.
But but they said they would make me rich! yeah a lot of companies hope for that but reality then slaps them (and you) in the face and have to go to plan B which in this case was... well... offline won't really work with what we got going on so we'll table it.... definitely..? indefinitely? who knows, but again at no time did anyone EVER not get something for their money.
I paid a small bit during the kickstarter campaign.. that was my way of ensuring I got something for my efforts, once the deal was done and the game was on its way I stepped it up with multiple contributions through content etc. And for that I got the best 3 months of gaming potentially ever.. Even before I joined the beta I got to spend time on the forums and discuss ideas with others on a game that I care a lot about. To me that's real value but others don't really see it so and that's why for the last few weeks or so these forums have gotten to be a bastion of pessimism and now this.

I guess it's back to drinking my glass half full of Kool-Aid for me while I eagerly await 3.9, gamma and then release.

If this is True, I would like a Refund.....and I will never buy a game from this company again. Nostalgia can take a flying LEAP! SH5 (UBI) All over again....Lea sigh.

Since I'm Pretty sure I will never get a Refund, I will be advising ANYONE asking me if they should buy, that they shouln't since this company Still, after all these years, hasnt got a clue. I waited so long for elite Frontier to get fixed and they never did. I should have known....

Thank you, I'm requesting my refund now. Was just about to upgrade to the Beta backer but will now get a refund of my pre-order. Way to kick loyal fans in the face.

Edit: I have now requested my refund, I hope it will be processed quickly so that I can wash my hands of this. So disappointed.

I hope when you kick yourself for your kneejerk reaction that you regret your decision that you lost all your pre-order goodies.

Just so i can get my head around this and act in time (if i need too). I've not been in the testing stage so don't have the game, but i paid for the Kickstarter all expansions edition.

Now the game is available from 16.12.14

Does that mean that even if i don't download it, if i haven't put in my refund request by 15.12.14 (or before the game is available for me to download) i still won't qualify for a refund?

With the lack of clear comment on situation about Single Player Off line mode after this latest newsletter, i can feel a number of people getting stuck in red-tape land.

So as someone that got involved because of the Single Player off line mode (i only play off-line games or games that don't require constant online access, Minecraft etc) and will not be able to use a product that requires always online or intermittent online at the games chosing, should i put in my request for a refund now before i hit that legal red tape 'get out of jail for FD' zone?

This is all very very gutting.

Technically as a Kickstarter backer you will not be entitled to a refund. However, no-one yet knows what stance Frontier will actually take on this.

You would need a different seed for every single copy of the offline single player game. Everyone would have to have their own content-unique world. If the offline static game used the same seed for everyone then all it would take is one player to plaster it all over the internet and YouTube that the Thargoids are located at such and such, that Raxxla is at coordinates so and so, and reveal any other nuggets of info they've either datamined from their saved game or descovered directly. That kind of thing could be disaterous from a sales point of for a game that is priding itself on the unknown. Not to mention spoiling it for many players!

The more I think about it the more an offline mode seems to be a pandoras box.

Erm, but this will happen with online too. Just look at the current crowd sourcing of commodities.
You think if you find the location of Thargoids in an online game that they won't exist for another player in exactly the same location?

They may have their reasons, but I doubt this being one of them.

What if the offline player starts having technical difficulties - could be extremely difficult for FD support to help. Then those players would be right back here calling out FD, demanding a refund and their heads on a plate.

But, that's no different to any other single player game. You just choose not to search for such game cheats.

My answer above applies to you too if you get a refund.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
Again, folks, let's not get into personal arguments, back-and-forth bickering, and trolling. Discuss the subject of the thread, not each other. If someone is breaking forum rules then report the post and leave it at that.

Thanks.

It would appear Diablo 3 appeals to peeps in the developed world with modern internet ISP's whereas, going by this thread, Elite Dangerous appeals to those in North Korea.

Wow - the more I see of this unkind, arrogant, entitled attitude on here, the less interested I am in multi player.

It would also be very likely said difficulty would be on the online version.

Have faith Windsaw.
Online is the future....you seen Steam or gamer reviews?
An online function is a rating staple now and online only games are increasing day by day.
Get used to it....
I have seen this.
I am aware that there may be a time coming in a couple of years when I will stop buying and playing new games altogether.
It doesn't even bother me much.
I have so many old games that I probably won't be able to play them through in my lifetime. More than enough.

and...I'm not being flippant.
You're probably a damn site better at Elite than me....stick with it.
Maybe not.
I never made it beyond "Competent" in the original Elite although I have played it for ages.

Well said... 100% agree.

Shields up.. have a feeling your going to get blasted.

The thing is what use are pre-order goodies if you dont have access to the internet for extended periods and can't even play the game?

!All this secrest will be online sooner as you think .... there are enough 24/7 Players which very fast produce endless of Lets Play Videos...I suggest in a half year all major Secrets will shown in a lets play. One week after releas of Alien you have seen the Whole Story in You tube...the same will be here....and it is not depend if it offline or not...
And about the SECRETS of Galaxy....Try to check the Traveller rules (Pen&Paper Game)....with Only 24 Digits I can code you an complett Solar system. Also with a little bit more I can code you your Cobra..... There are no Secrets if you know Traveller....

Wow! I'm blown away by how quickly some of the community appears to have turned on FD.

More than any announcement this saddens me the most :/

I'm also confused by some anti-online comments for a title that's download only. I get the point, but surely the trade off between a live evolving economy, dynamic changing events and unpredictability are worth loosing off-line solo play for, aren't they?

Wow!...

It's not download only - box edition to come, at least as a kickstarter pledge.

The comments are not anti online. They reflect that since the very start FD have advertised/inferred/promised the game as playing with an offline mode. People pledged to the kickstarter after seeking clarification on this. Even worse the game has been "Advertised" as such in the online store, so people have bought/pre-ordered the game on this basis.

Some people have limited/flaky internet connections so for them the offline mode was the "light at the end of the tunnel." Which hasn't turned into an oncoming train, it's been snuffed out. Without warning, without any indication, and with a justification that some are already questioning.

I pledged during KS, the offline mode was a factor then, as like some others who've already posted, my job at the time kept me in hot/dry/sandy places for 9 months of the year. The net connection cost upwards of $160 and was often slower than 1995 dial up, when it worked.

Now I work in back in Blighty, with a 100mb cable connection, and so, while I could adopt the "I'm alright Jack - selfish attitude". Unlike some I can still empathize and understand why this has upset so many.

Judging by the way this thread has blown up it's got the potential to bite FD hard, hopefully the damage limitation is going to work when/if they decide to start it.
