I think that landing gear should always have some shadows cast on planetary surface, no matter the lighting situation.
Many otherwise beautiful screenshots I have seen fail where the gear meets the ground and look 'off' because of it.
To my non-game-dev mind there should be some 'simple' fix for this but I realize it could be quite complex.
