Newcomer / Intro Noooooooooo !!!!!!!!

*Reads story, gets to silver part...* *Shakes head knowingly* *Puts hand over mouth in disbelief, shock, and understanding* *Eyes Widen at mention of boost* *Suppresses a smile and a shudder at same time* *Mention of iceberg sends chill down spine* *Laughs at comparison of asteroid to Nebraska*

Lol - thats pretty much me while reading your story. It sucks...but funny. I feel for you I do, but that was agreat read. Especially because I had a similar experience mining lol.

Thanks. I facepalm meself at the shear stupidity of it all for a measly couple of tons of Silver, and the "oh it's the Five O, better run than get a fine".

To add insult to injury after i paid the insurance, i notice that i've been hit by a fine of 5600 credits and my rep has dropped from friendly to Neutral. Though the latter could have me collecting bounties on pirates aligned with that faction.

You'd see the same as forwards. Remember, you're traveling at the relative speed greater than c, not actually doing it in your ship's frame of reference. Even in the ED universe, reaching c is impossible.

I won't even begin to pretend to understand the physics behind a theoretically vaguely possible means of superluminal travel!

But it seems to me that even if I'm travelling around the galaxy in some kind of frame / bubble that exists outside normal space-time, and viewing/interacting/scanning items in normal space-time frame, then light must be reaching that bubble - which isn't possible either if it is (in the perspective of the normal space time frame) travelling away at > 1c.

...or to phrase it another way, if a real frame-shift drive were practically possible, I doubt it would work/look anything like Frontier have presented it.

Hence the reason there is no Blue-Shift or Red-Shift. Right?

Sure, a lot of it is done for gameplay purposes. The basic concept is taken from a real theory, that still has to be validated.

I don't know if the theory suggests that the space-time bubble would be closed to the outside during travel or not. I try to rationalize the game as during each frame shift, you have a brief second where info can get in and out before the next shift.

For all we know, the real thing, if possible, might be like the FTL in Asimov's Foundation series, where calculations must be done before each jump, and the actual jump is done blindly.

Boosted into asteroid? Check. Boosted into back of station? Check. Remapped boost? Check.

If only it had been a mistaken button push, rather it was an on purpose "Crap it's the Five O", "Punch it Bishop", "We are Leaving!"

I think every pilot has at least one asteroid with their name on it (or entrails) :)

The first time I died was when i was trying to do some mining. My laser cut some metal of the asteroid. When I was going to open my cargo hatch to scoop the metal, I accidently hit the boost button. Bang, and i was dead. I have never mined since.

With me the most dangerous thing is stations. "All right i'm in the mailslot and... omg i boosted NONNONONONO!" And then there's the automatic few deaths when getting a bigger ship and not being used to this thing called inertia. Let's leave it at, "holy crap my ship is doing space donuts!" to "Wait right, I said RIGHT!!!" As my overaccelerated clipper careens off course into a departing conda. Facepalms to be had, and that ache of 3-5 million in lost cargo and ship/module insurance! Elite can be unforgiving but I still love it.

In the ED universe, reaching 460 metres per second is imposible!

There should be a thread (if there isn't one... how about this thread?) for "The Stupidest thing you've done in ED"

Mine is probably: was trying to dock quickly as I had a cargo full of "stolen" / illicit goods, and as I reached the letter box there was a dropship crawling in so I had to squeeze past while speeding in to avoid being scanned. With all this going on, I forgot to request docking clearance, so warnings started screaming at me as soon as I got through the letter box.

Panic. Tried to turn around, but it's awkward at slow speed, so now I'm blocking the letterbox too. Double panic. Finally get back out, and am going really slowly for some reason. Landing gear is still down! Triple panic. By the time it's retracted, I've already been scanned and a huge fine awarded... Gaaaaah!
