Even though PC power is increasing, FD have lowered the graphics again and again. We've had screenshots after each patch showing the downgrade to what we had before.
So as this thread's been brought back to life again?
What is the current state of play with the nebula graphics? has it been ramped back up again? Or still "optimised"?
I'm heading out to take a look. It's difficult to get a direct comparison with the horse head nebula now though - as most of that region has been permit locked since those early screenshots.
And has the word "Console" come up over and over?![]()
as most of that region has been permit locked since those early screenshots.
Some game companies put in PayWalls....FDev put in GrindWalls LOL
I think the permit locks are more to do with aliens...![]()
You mean they're being nasty and won't hand them out? Maybe we should just 50c our way there and circumvent the hyperjump restriction?![]()
Wow, that's quite...shocking to be honest. I didn't know what they looked like before, but that's so much better. It's really disappointing seeing what this game has looked like/could look like. Really seems like every single update downgraded the graphics at some place.

The previous high res images of the nebulas is just that. Images.
The new engine has built 3D approximations of the same nebulas, so that we can watch them from different sides in space and still get a good enough result. Not as high detail as the photographs, but good enough for the game. I would like FD to make high rest image renderings of the nebulas from at least 6 sides, preferably 14 sides or more. That way we would have simulated "photographs" of the nebula from every direction that could be used as place holders for the real 3D nebulas in game.
This high level of detail rendered placeholder for low level of detail distances, is pretty easy to do, but require detailed data of the actual nebulas.
Without the high res "photographs", the depth of reality and immersion is lost. I can watch the real photographs and realize the fantastic vast deep distances and the insane amount of space and detail these things really hold.
I dunno... they're both visually appealing, but I honestly prefer the more "wispy" version over the one that looks all clumpy like cauliflower. But, to each their own, I guess.
I'm so glad someone more prominent in the community has noticed this, might get fixed now. I was pretty disappointed when I reached the Seagull Nebula. There exists a fix temporarily, however it will only allow one nebula to be rendered. However, it will be rendered in full quality.
This thread is from mid-2015, so I don't think the issue is going to be fixed in a hurry. However there is a reply here from Frontier where they explain what is going on.
And I think they've jumped to false conclusions simply based on your area. Check out the Seagull Nebula on the map. Notice how there's not any other nebula nearby to confuse the engine into thinking it should be low quality (other than Thor's Helmet, which I was definitely further than)...
I noticed it again at Rosette and all the waypoints through the Crab Nebula Expedition. I stopped taking screenshots because it was so depressing. Even the Crab Nebula looks all blocky and low resolution.
