General / Off-Topic Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris is Burning

Paris is going to be swarming with Poles and Romanians for this.(Single market rules require that work be advertised EU wide, and Poles Romanians will undercut any French bidder)
However, there will be need for very specialized workers for this type of construction site.

Actually they do, it offsets their tax liabilities.
The Pinault family said it would not ask for a tax exemption.

For Pinault it is a net contribution.

The Pinault said they were touched in the heart by this tragedy and also seeing their 17 year old daughter crying in front of the television.

The very rich also seem to have a heart from time to time

The others will follow ?

'The cultural and natural heritage is among the priceless and irreplaceable assets, not only of each nation, but of humanity as a whole. The loss, through deterioration or disappearance, of any of these most prized assets constitutes an impoverishment of the heritage of all the peoples of the world.' (from the Operational Guidelines for the Implementation of the World Heritage Convention)
It is true that some jewels in the world must absolutely be preserved.

A spectacular picture here.

that took many ages to develop, can never be replaced but vanishes in the blink of an eye .. that is species of insects / the environment.

in fact it has happened, we have been there, we lost 90% of our knowledge and praticaly returned to the stone age for centuries. btw, that was thanks to what now is the christian church.

What's done, is done at the end of the day though. Our ecosphere might yet be savable, like the knowledge was and the roof will be, eventually.
A clean / green renaissance? Caretakers and sustainability-skilled-stone-masons, bring it on.

It would be nice, however allegedly there's more research effort going into how you pay a private army to protect you after ecological and financial collapse than collapse avoidance itself.

Mercenaries are never to trusted, they can and will turn on you when things go sour, what you want are people who will give their lives for whatever it is you're selling, like religion, the circle is now complete.

Mercenaries don't turn on people, that sort of reputation is very bad for business. They just walk away when the money dries up, hence the research. Blackwater have always been very loyal to their paymasters.

The most exploitable type of soldier are the ones who think they are doing whichever gods work. If you know how to push their faith buttons they'll do all kinds of truly sickening stuff and not only call it morality they'll expect a reward, sometimes (conveniently for the people in charge) in the next life.

History is full of it, and i know how they work, you can't trust them, they also run tail as soon as they are outnumbered, because they only fight for money. Those who fight for a cause are much more dangerous than a rent a soldier ever will be.

What we see is a jaw dropping amount of wealth pledged without so much as a second thought to the restoration of an anachronistic folly. Over a billion for this compared to 150 million for Live Aid.
It's a slap in the face for the people of Europe and utterly at odds with the idea of France as a secular nation.
Just more grand standing by L'empereur "Je suis L'Europe" Macron.

I could understand the people of France being concerned with how their tax dollars are being spent, but when it comes to wealthy individuals stepping up and deciding how they want to spend their own money I fail to see the problem. Do you (and everyone else on this thread) like people telling you how to spend your money?

On a more practical front: restoring a national treasure has multiple benefits to its country of origin, while donating vast sums of money to poor people has almost none.

You have me confused with other posters, I made no comments regarding wealthy individuals.
As stated earlier ruins would draw as many tourists as an intact building, see Stone Henge, the Parthenon, the Colliseum, etc.
