Newcomer / Intro NPC as our wingman

Hi,

Can anyone tell me if we can hire a NPC as our wingman and let him fly one of our ships?

No, unfortunately NPCs can be hired only to pilot the ship-launched fighters. Or if you take the controls of the SLF, they can pilot your ship for you.
But they can't pilot another one of your ships.

I'd love to see this coming to the game! We could issue orders just the way we do now... we can already hire up to 3 NPCs... it all adds up!

Wouldn’t it just mean that everyone would be flying around with a wing of NPC’s? I don’t think much would change except lag, delay, congestion, frustration.

Well, Frontier probably has reasons to not include this feature other than troll people who'd want it. :)
 
I think everyone thinks about this at one time or another. To fully consider it, I think about how it would actually play out. Initially everyone thinks it would be great to have escorts for their trade or mining ship. The unspoken assumption is that it would be great if I was the only one with escorts. But of course it wouldn’t work that way. All npc’s would be in wings. All (or at least most) players too. That would mean landing pads just got 3x or 4x more occupied. Instances, which can already hard to get all your friends into, are more full. Everyone’s cpu/gpu just got a 3x-4x workload, and it would be worst in combat with all the moves, shots, projectiles, chaff, explosions, fighters, etc. One commander could almost singlehandedly lock out an outpost. I could give many other examples.

Benefits? Yes, it would be cool. But since everyone would be doing it, in the end it wouldn’t give anyone a real advantage or additional safety as originally imagined.

So, yeah, when I think about it, I don’t think it’s a great idea. As I stated increases in, lag, delay, congestion and frustratation would outweigh any coolness in my opinion.
 
We already have CZs full of NPCs and players and it just works. Having NPCs as wing mates could be a real advantage for miners against other NPCs or even players. Training crew members takes times and I'd love to see what they can do with some specific builds I have for some ships.

Just RE: players - don't forget that it's not an advantage if both sides can have it. Being ganked by eight ships instead of four doesn't really sound like fun. :LOL:
