Guide / Tutorial Nutter’s explorers guide to the Galaxy

Thanks Jackie Silver :) and awesome discovery! any idea how much it's mass adds to reward?

oh... and I just now found one of those "Permit" systems where you need permission in order to jump to (Lagoon Sector FB-X C1-41)... Another alien home system for future expansion?! :D I've heard/seen some other ones but I think they are elsewhere(?)

Think I'll be taking some weapons with me when I get an Asp which I intend to kit out for exploration only (love my Viper and Cobra too much). Never know when Thargoids will pounce on an unsuspecting lone explorer...

Up to you, but atm it's loss of jump distance for nothing. With everything else on their (FD) plate I don't think Thargoids, or any other aliens are incoming for a few months yet.

I'm getting to the point where I can identify most good stuff right after firing the Space Horn. :)
A design bug, IMHO. If it is unexplored, we should not be given enough information to deduce stuff about it. Well, other than 'obvious' things like if you have hit an ice planet, then anything further out will be ice, too.

Why do you think that? Why would the d.scanner not be able to give us visual information about the bodies it pings? A worse design would be forcing players to fly to an scan every body to find out if it was even worth their time.

Hiiighly disagree. If exploration were any more difficult nobody would do that.

And, reminder, most on this thread(?) are using advanced discovery scanners, those already cost 1.5million and at least I still half of the time only get nondescript white ball on my system list and it very well could be water or earth-like for all I know/knew.

it´s sum of 1) what level your DS is 2) what is the system setup, how much there's overall interference for DS to recognize objects and what they could be.

It sounds like what you are saying depends on what you describe as explored or unexplored... :p

It's just I have this paranoia that when Thargoids are added they won't be announced through patch notes and many a explorer will find themselves interdicted in witch space than attacked by Thargoids. For all we know, next patch could be when Thargoids are added (extremely unlikely). It will probably be a few months, perhaps during a RL festival like Halloween or Christmas before they are added, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

This is a 112 Earth-mass Water World. Mental. Yours to see at HR 5998.

I think you should add this to the exploration records thread by Patau, that's a record that should stand a long time. I think the previous one was mine for 24 earth masses (back when water worlds were called earth-like)

Heh, good idea. It's a monster of a planet. With a radius just under 18000 km I make its surface gravity about 140ms-2, pancake time for earthlings...

Made it to Ranger with 9 mil I think (i have 1137 systems visited)

Nice, I'm on 1636 visited atm....and 12000 lights years out still !! Looking forward to cashing the data in when I get back. Still loads to visit though...

You ain't joking either....

I hope we will one day (hopefully sooner rather than later) get extended statistics for exploration. Do you guys write down every kind of Star/Planet/Object you encounter?

Exactly what Jackie Says - I tend to pick a place to go to then go through the above process to cover my costs of exploring :)

Do you guys have any pictures on how the different Planets look like on the System Map/in the HUD when you have targeted them? I'm now able to identify some types of them by looking at the map or the HUD representation but by no means all of them. And while I still think that learning by doing in this case would be more fun, I guess that my opinion might change drastically after a few more systems, meaning that a chart for this would be awesome ;)

Just curious, is it a bug that selling data far away from the source doesn't increase the reward, or is this intentional? I don't want to make a very long distance trip (1000> LY) and sell all my data, only for them to fix this if it is a bug. That'd be a huge loss.

I don't think it's been implemented yet, so sell wherever you can, has to be >20ly from source and you will get same payment everywhere, although your rep will go up with what ever faction you sell to.

That's a surprise. I thought you sell to Universal Cartographics and not to the station, so the rep is not affected.

Does anyone know if reflective armor offers greater protection against heat?
I was considering going with renforced armor for my next trip, just for peace of mind when out there more than anything else.
