Can you tell me what your setup is (Ship & Mods) give me an idea of what is possible... How long do want to go out for?

Hauler, 3C fuel scoop(it works well actually, can fill up in about 18-20s with 95% heat ), 2A FSD, DSS, BDS, Class D everything else including shield, plus I do have 1 PL (a pea shooter i know) but hey Captain Kirk doesn't leave the Enterprise without a phaser. Even with that though I still have a 25-28 LY range on the FSD.

Have a +1 (wish I could give more) Rep, as a casual player I don't have time to discover all the minutiae of this glorious game, so you've saved me heaps of time noobing/noodling about.

For recommended equipment, perhaps we could add Point Defense to empty utility slots? They add no mass, carry lots of ammo and they are cheap. So if we are interdicted on the way in and out of populated areas, they have a chance to help without appreciable drawbacks.

Ok Thanks, well TBH the shield is not required nor the weapon should get you up to around 30ly - I went on a huge loop sol - witch head - NGC 7822 - Elephant's and SADAR all in a hauler without shields and weapon :) (over 4,000 ly)

Get rid of the weapons. Save the weight. The shields are optional. There are NPCs out there that are "clean" but will try to intercept you. So your shields will probably save you if you can't evade the interdiction.
Setup is good though. My first trip in a similar setup took me to the Coalsack Nebula. Not that spectacular, but a good first exploration experience. Fly safe
 
I've noticed a lot of the periphery systems have cartographic data mapped already. Probably someone has tried to map out the most distant outposts. This happens more on the plane of the galactic ecliptic, though. I don't think Seymour The Adder feels comfortable more than three jumps away from the gas station... so I'm probably not going to try for the Magellanic Clouds. :)
 
For the record, I'm currently at 3403 systems visited and 18,082,380 credits exploration profit and still ranked Ranger. Fah. I'd hoped it might be 18 million.

I have a chaff launcher and an ECM fitted to my adder for exactly that reason.
 
A tip for finding distant binaries if you only have the intermediate discovery scanner:

Select the star and look along its orbit line till you find a star right on the line. Fly towards it. Once you hit 150C +, angle your flight to one side so you can still see it but it is near the edge of your canopy and watch for it moving against the background. If you can spot some parallax, then it must be a nearby object.

Im a bit reluctant to get rid of them, are you absolutely certain I am not going to need a laser? I don't want to get out there 3000LY from the nearest starbase and then need it.

I am absolutely not getting rid of the shield generator though.
 
I did some 800 LY pretty near habited space without any weapons mounted on my Adder.

Been interdicted (due to ignoring risks) a couple of times, all times managed to avoid interdiction.

If you warp in and there's a contact in the system already, throttle to zero, exit supercruise. When you get back to supercruise, the contacts are gone.

Very rarely you'll get a freak event when you're going 200C, an eagle spawns at a stellar some Ls away, it boosts towards you, does a 180' and manages to interdict you, despite your speed, and him having to slow down to what, 20c maybe?

Anyway, I'm carrying a 1.5mil scanner and some 800k of gear on my adder. I sure won't stop for a fight with anyone. All power to eng/sys and tail it!
 
You can always run away IF you get interdicted and IF you fail the minigame. - I only tend to get interdicted in/near the populated systems - as son as you leave them you mostly see exploring NPCs if any
 
You won't get trouble after about 500ly out these days (used to encounter pirates everywhere in the galaxy), though it's loosely possible that FD will increase that range.
I carry weapons (energy only when exploring), submit to and destroy any NPC that interdicts me.

Well if you stop to shoot anything your going to go pop, so get rid of the temptation... Shields to protect you from what? Run Forrest... Run!!

Perhaps I'm thinking exploration is more robust then I think it is, I keep thinking I would use the laser to blast open some rocks to get at the alien artifacts inside.

In regards to shields, I was thinking impacts and other things like that, since you can't just repair your ship mid flight without extra gear.
 
I have an addition:

You missed that it matters where you sell your data. Reputation wise, selling to federation will increase rep to them etc. :)
