Guide / Tutorial Nutter’s explorers guide to the Galaxy

Hi explorers.

I'm Nolh. I follow this thread for weeks now, great job !

I found an interesting system tor gather data about giant class I (7), II (3) and giant water life based (2) orbiting a carbonated star. It's HIP 87820

I sadly can't post screenshot due to my newbie statut on this forum.

Awesome list. One recommendation though. I'd be careful with the no-weapons advice. I'm 7k LY out right now. If an update came within the next week or two introducing something hostile out here, or really anywhere in my path, running from everything would...suck. So I'm willing to lose a few LY of jump range as insurance, you know?
I believe if the Thargoids want you killed you need something else rather than a couple tacked on weapons on a non-combat-fitted vessel in order to survive.

How do you guys deal with the massive delay in the galaxy map? I seem to only be able to plot out 3-4 jumps at a time. It's very annoying if you're only doing scans in passing.

Tigga in my experience it's best not to wait, it's quicker to accept the path it will quickly give (me anyway) for 50~75ly and just do it. Waiting just wastes time you can spend actually jumping. I can travel about 1500ly's in an hour, with topping up with scoop if I'm not scanning stuff.

"Good news, everyone!"
(really :D )

I'm back from what has been my most successful trip in terms of getting useful results; in no special order I got data for;

4 new neutron stars
a black hole
a Herbig Ae/Be protostar
an Ammonia World (they're valuable!)
a Helium-Rich gas giant
a Class V gas giant (only had one before)
a candidate-for-terraforming HMC planet I can estimate the value for

And found a system (COL 359 SECTOR VT-Q D5-63) with 3 candidate-for-terraforming water worlds (binary pair with the third in close orbit), a fourth water world and a candidate-for-terraforming HMC planet.
Also a system with what looks like a 112 Earth mass Water World I'm going to go back and scan, and lots of other fun systems.

Nearly got 'em all now... :)

@PSB, cheers, I'll see what's close. I think I know where to look for them now.

I came to the same conclusion when I sold the data for the two I'd found, seemed the system was way more valuable than I though, be interested to see the actual range though if you've got it.

I'm sure these ammonia type worlds were way more common in Frontier and FFE, I guess we've had 20 years of science to refine the model :). I seem to recall in FFE they were of great interest to the Thargoids, so maybe there's more to come about that which explains the value, or maybe it's just the rarity and value to the xenobiologists :)

It was just under 17000 credits for a 0.4 Earth mass Ammonia world, which puts them between Water Worlds and Water Worlds (CFT.)

Latest data linked here. I think from looking at the results that Neutron Stars use the same value formula as Black Holes do.

Interesting shot of the Witch Head. The position puts stars in the eyes of the 'face'

Space is green in the Spirograph Nebula:

Last trip took in the Spirograph, part of the Orion and then the Witch Head Nebula. Total of 250ish systems scanned for a return of around 1.7 mill Cr. My first trip out was in a 21 Ly Adder the next in a 25 Ly Cobra now I have got a D5 in my Asp for 36Ly I'm off again!

I've said it before and I'll say it again... Great thread!

Hey guys, I've been exploring for quite some time already, but I do have a question that I'd like to have answered. When someone explores a system, that system will appear as explored, and with exploration data available for every other player, or each and every player can explore the same system and get the money from it? I ask this because I've been exploring the systems around the main starting areas, and I'm surprised that other than the systems with landing stations, the others are mostly unexplored.

Are T Tauris worth anything?
I found a sweet system with 14 of them orbiting each other.

So a few things really...

1st- My personal thanks and appreciation to Nutter for taking the time to do this awesome guide! I found it to be a huuuuuuuuge help to me!!!

So last night thought I would take a break for bounty hunting and try exploring, having a Viper I knew I was not going to far LoL

Fuel scooping---> Thanks to the video, I'm getting good at this but... a few times I over heated by getting to close. So i faced my ship away from the star and went full engine with boosting but could not get away from the star.
Is there some trick to get away or is this the server problems?
At one point I had my ship at full speed, went and made myself a drink, smoked a cigarette (10-15mins) and come back to still being to close to the star being stuck at 80% heat. I was able to jump out but took huge heat damage.

Earning credits---> So I'm use to bounty hunting, 30mins time and about 50K in credits. (rough average) Last night I spent about 2 hours doing the explore thing and made just a little over 8K credits.
Am I doing it wrong? LoL
I by no means have anything close to a explorer set up but Viper with class C equipment or better, did I just get unlucky and spend to much time in a system with no value in exploring?

No complaints at all, just being curious is all as I would really like to bounce back in forth between bounties and exploring :D

Had much fun, thank goodness for emergency shut downs as I went or tried to fly thru a plant ring for the first time, all I can say is... wow

Oh and if any other new players are reading this....

Good hunting and happy exploring!

Thanks for the replies and information!!!

A good rule of thumb is to ignore all asteroid fields and those white moons orbiting every decent sized planet.
They take forever to scan and you have to fly super close to them.

I wana know same thing as rackabones....when a system is explored and data sold, does that data then become purchasable by everyone?

Sounds like you were fuel scooping while not in Supercruise to me. If you are just under normal engine speed it would take that long to get away thus a massively extended heat up and cool down phase.

It was the intention, however currently as far as we can tell.. this is not the case.

Thanks for the replies and information!!!

Thanks, I started the thread, with the intention of keeping it up to date, the community has added a lot of info to this guide, so please scan through and dish out some much deserved rep :)

The problem with ships like the viper is that they run hot, my ASP runs at 33% heat most of the time, where as depending on the loadout a viper may run a lot hotter!

If your ship gets over 90% heat just but hitting the frameshift drive then consider some more efficient mods to keep the temp down. :)

btw if I sell my data at Empire, does it improve my relations to Empire? or is the cartographics corporation thingie faction neutral?

Also, how you guys do your exploration? do you guys surface scan everything?

I'm now finally around Lagoon nebula, and frankly, I have passed passed many systems just scanning system quickly with my advanced discovery scanner and then the main star with detailed surface scanner, moving on as I still have long way to go... is this bad or should I do more surface scanning? heading for NGC 6357 which is stil faaaar away and it sounds ridiculous to surface scan so much... thus far I've bothered to surface scan probably 2 out of 5 systems (those that have clearly had well paying objects/planets).

Yes, it improves your reputation with the faction you sell it to, though not as much as it used to.

Absolutely not. If I'm out for money, I scan only things which are worthwhile.
Though I respect people who take the time to do a thorough job!

This basically comes down to:
I scan the system with ADS.
I scan the star I arrive at. (~1200 credits)
I scan any small planets which are within scanning range without moving. Generally they'll be High Metal Content (~ 2500 credits) or Metal Rich (~ 5500 credits).
I scan any large planets and stars which are within scanning range without moving.
If I spot anything which looks like a Water World (~ 13000), Earth-like World (~ 29000) or Ammonia World (ha ha, ~ 17000) I'll go scan it wherever it is.
If I spot a White Dwarf (~ 11000), Neutron Star (~ 19000) or Black Hole (~ 20000+) I'll go scan it wherever it is.
If I spot something which might be a High Metal Content / Candidate for Terraforming (~ 19000) I'll go scan it.
If I feel like it, I'll chase down extra Metal-Rich Worlds (~ 5500) and Class II Gas Giants (~ 5500).

I'm getting to the point where I can identify most good stuff right after firing the Space Horn. :)

In other news...

This is a 112 Earth-mass Water World. Mental. Yours to see at HR 5998.

And I got the values for some HMC / CFT planets as hinted above.

(edited to add)
A caveat to the above - I sold exploration data at an Alliance faction station in a Fed-controlled system. I gained rep. with the Feds. :( Yuck!

Exactly what Jackie Says - I tend to pick a place to go to then go through the above process to cover my costs of exploring :)
