Guide / Tutorial Nutter’s explorers guide to the Galaxy

You do get lensing with some of them, I think it depends to an extent on what the background is like as well, Maia in the Pleiades has one that's quite easy to see the lensing on, but the ones in HIP 63835 aren't really visible. Neutron stars have to be shown a similar level of respect regarding how close you get as well, just in case you come across one, but at least you can see them, albeit as just a point of light :)

Ok. Could be that NGC 6357 nebula is so dim then.. maybe BH mass also adds to their visibility/lensing? those 3 BHs were "only" few solar mass. Yeah, neutron stars are another quite scary things too, especially if you don't expect to jump to them :p on this trip seen/scanned 3 of those

Think you could post the linear ones with the function fit next time you update?

The star and neutron star/black holes functions can be found here https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=81653&page=10&p=1374861&viewfull=1#post1374861
It contains fewer points as it's from earlier data from Jackie however I've done some checks and they seem to sit on the same line:

Stars: 1200+18.13*MASS (the points off the line from Jackie skew the data a bit but all other stars lie exactly on the line)
Black Hole/Neutron Stars : 17914 + 270.48*MASS

Interesting Observation and informed Guess (possible explanation for most offset points):

I've noticed when selling system data that a few systems were selling for 0CR value (these were generally within the inhabited area). I think what may be happening is that any data that's already been sold to a station/faction/universal cartographics is being subtracted from the value which it would otherwise have.
Correlating this with the information I have from stars: that unexplored stars give 1/6 of the full value and stars explored w/o detailed surface scanner give 1/2 of the full value this might explain most of those points in the graphs Jackie has been posting that are off the curves or lines.

I think you're right, it's something along those lines.
The super-exciting revelation I thought I had earlier was that for some types of object the 'wrong' values seemed to be 4/5 of expected and for some 5/6 of expected, but then I looked at the exact numbers again and got confused.

Just got my detailed scanner. Whew!

Question: I know there are expeditions to the core, and the other arms, but does anyone go out to the far distances above and below the galactic plane of the ecliptic? That "z" axis gets overlooked, I think.

Except for the central region of the galaxy where I think many explorers will go due to the many many neutron stars off above and below the main plane the z axis range is actually pretty small (+/-1k max) before the distances between systems start becoming too large for any ship to jump

Ok I'm turning round, I have definitive data on black holes on board - I will also be taking in another 10 - 12 black holes on the way back... I'm in turbo mode (Scoop, Jump, Scoop...) so hopfully I can get back by tonight.

This is something I'm quite conscious of, I've previously had a bit of 2D-vision forgetting how deep the galaxy is now compared to Frontier and have started making a conscious effort to look up and down when picking the next system to go and scan :)

If your going to go high or low off the plane then you are going to need a ASP for Max Jump range - 32ly setup, even then, you can quickly run into trouble with distances, I got cut short heading to a very interesting nebula, 43ly jump was required, looking further along the route it soon became clear 150ly jumps were needed. All that said, there are systems that are over 2,000ly from any other system - so currently will be impossible to visit!

When I came back from the horsehead nebula last night I ended up a couple of hundred lightyears below populated space due to rubbish route plotting :D

Is it just me, or does anyone else get a little nervy when exploring down? I cant explane it. Im fine with forward to the core, I love to go up, but going down is like diving into the deep, kinda scary. One day I will just go down, but ti gives me buterflys

It's a lot clearer lower down, around 1,700ly down it gets sparse unless you are near the core!

OK, after 3 days of trading I have a pretty good set up for an explorer, 500k worth anyway, so now that I have the gear, what would you say is a good way to get started. what areas have you guys not gotten to yet??

Can you tell me what your setup is (Ship & Mods) give me an idea of what is possible... How long do want to go out for?
