Guide / Tutorial Nutter’s explorers guide to the Galaxy

a metal-rich moon (Which looked exactly the same as an icy moon does on the System map, by the way...

Oh, that's interesting. Do you recall what sort of planet (Class V Gas Giant?) it was a moon of, what the local star was and what distance the planet was from the star?

The ordinary metal-rich worlds (as distinct from high-metal-content) seem to form almost exclusively as the closest worlds to the star, though I have seen rare occasions where there's an HMC world immediately before a MRW.

Do you only get paid for exploring things nobody else has explored? Or does everyone get to explore everything and get paid for doing so?

Everyone gets to explore everything and gets paid for doing so, whether its been previously explored or not. But the first one to explore something gets the highest payout. Anyone who comes afterwards and explores it gets a lesser payout.

If it says unexplored then you get FULL payment!

Ah, I thought if it says unexplored it just means its unexplored to you ? I'm sure I read in the archives that the first one to explore something gets the biggest payout too ?

That was the intention, but currently everyone gets the same regardless ...
A simple test would confirm it, I'm only 1,800ly from home now ...

Yeah I just had a quick glance at the proposal and how its supposed to work..

"Players can sell the information that they discover through these methods

  • Players will have to travel back to sell the data they acquire while exploring
  • The first player to sell/discover the information recieves a greater reward
  • Information may become redundant from time to time as the galaxy moves and it can then be resold"

So eventually the first player to survey a system or find something will get a higher payout... eventually... hopefully :)

Rudewords.

Just found what looked to be a Water Giant with another Water Giant orbiting it, far away from a giant star.
"I'll be clever. I'll scan the little one first, just to be sure that they're water giants, then I'll come back and scan the big one by itself to get a value for it."
"beep beep beepity beepity....Class I Gas Giant."
"Oh well, best scan the big one then, if the moon is a gas giant it's unlikely the big one will be a..."
"...Water Giant."

Rudewords.

On the plus side, it does tend to confirm what we thought, and what the description indicates: far out from a giant star.
This one here is 180 Earth masses, which is pretty ginormous for an Icy planet precursor.

For the neutron stars, habitable zone depends greatly on the temp.
Neutron Star (Temp=1,300,000 K): Probably under 2 AU.
Neutron Star (Temp=3,300,000 K): 7 AU!
This is the list of some terraforming candidates or earth-like worlds that I found.

Also, I don't think that there's a distinction between a water world and earth-like.
For a water world:
If it's too hot, it will be high-metal content.
If it's decently hot, it will be water-world
If it's within the habitable zone, wit will be a canadidate
If it's right-on, it will be earth-like
If it's too cold, it will be rocky ice world

It's parent was one of the other metal rich planet - definitely a moon rather than a binary planet.) interesting system. Three stars, a single and a binary, And no other planets at all except metal rich. Never seen another like it. I'm away from my computer so I can't get any other info. I'll post the system name etc tomorrow.

I died while exploring in hauler due to pirate shooting my thrusters and destroying me in the process.... I was out about 250LY out from nearest outpost and pirates attack me near every system i jump into... i had no cargo but all they wanted was my goodies... i had scanned all systems on the way and i had some very nice systems scanned and lost all... very very sad... lost like 15 hours of flying...

Unlucky Commander :(

I've just arrived back home, over 1,000 systems scanned, HOWEVER only 7 pages of data!

Logging off, will come back later and hope the 50 pages arrives, otherwise expect a very unhappy Nutter!

On my first real exploration trip. Reconfigured ASP for max jump range and went to California nebula direction. Found various black holes, giant stars, roaming inside the nebula systems.

Now heading over to the horsehead/witchhead area before going back.

The view from out here into the galactic disc is spectacular in Oculus, and its just really a nice way to play.

Weirdly enough I ran into not 1, but 2!! commanders in the same system out there. Totally crazy.

Only gripe I have is the X55 configuration in system and galaxy view. Need to find some hints on how to configure the X55 to allow better navigation there while having the Oculus on. Right now using mouse and semi-randomly clicking around to try to click the stars.

Any hints?

Nutter. How many do bodies in a system do you tend to do Full Scans on? if any

Well, I finally decided I'd had enough trading. I rebuilt by Cobra last night for full scanning and headed out. I was down by Fujin so I though I'd just pick a direction and go. Ended up at MAIA in the Pleiades and man is that system full, found my first black hole, my first water based and ammonia based life-bearing gas giants and hit my own personal speed record at just shy of 900c. Now I'm wondering where to go next, I'l probably just pick a direction and head off out into the black again.

Fly safe Commanders.

Here's my latest data set.

It has the value for another Ammonia world, more Carbon stars, some data from Carazvan and misc. extra on valuable planets and stellar remnants.

Also over 21.5 million credits, ~3700 systems scanned and still Ranger. :( That's well over twice the ~9 million credit threshold for the previous rank increase.
If Ranger is equivalent to Dangerous I'm guessing at 27 million threshold for Deadly equivalent and a 100 million threshold for Elite. :( I hope to be wrong.

i'm on my first trip, now about 1500ly away from lhs 3447, at horsehead nebula, on my way to monkey head nebula. i have 2,5 mil worth hauler, with jump range of 28,5ly. no shields, no weapons, only discovery scanner and surface scanner, everything else set for max jump. never had problems with fuel scooping. my hull is on 92% just because of some npc interdictions. met commander in pleiades nebula, he was on his way to california nebula. unfortunately, i haven't seen any O type star yet :/. i hope that it'll change soon.

That's a pretty good first trip!

Talking of NPC interdictions in deep space - has any noticed an increase in them over the last week or so? I know FD said they had toned them down the further out you were from civilization but they appear to be sneaking up again. I saw 4 other NPCs in one system last night about 250 - 300 LY from the nearest outpost. A Master dropship did me some damage before I zapped him. It's scary getting hit this far out.

well, the last npc i saw was about 400 (edit:more likely 300-350) ly from nearest inhabited system. beyond that, i'm alone. :)

like isaid i was killed about 250LY out. was attacked every other system i jumped into... and i saw NPC in near all of the bigger ones... sometimes even in ones with just one star and no planets. i was interdicted 3 times everytime lost some of my % and finally i was caught near star and my thrusters were already at 50% so i wasnt able to outrun... had data worht 1/4 to 1/3 of a million CR... very very sad... now running cobra just in case :p
