Newcomer / Intro Objective not at designated location

So I accepted a mission to go kill 5 pirates at Ross 142. I hyper-spaced my way on over, and found 1 star; no pirates. There is nothing else in that system. No station, planets, nothing. I opened my UI, and went to the Contacts tab, and there were no contacts shown. I can still see the mission I accepted in the UI, however. Is there something I need to do, when arriving at a mission location, to trigger an event?

Wait. And fly around looking for USS' (Unidentified Signal Sources)

Stay in supercruise and just cruise about, look out for USS, both visually and occasionally on your left hand nav panel. If there is a Nav Beacon, it may well be worth dropping out of supercruise and checking that out - this would be a good place for pirates to hang out too. Some of these missions have several hours to complete and it can take a while to find them.

I havn't actually done a 'look for pirates' mission so I'm not sure how you actually ID that someone is the pirate that you are after - check for affiliation and whether wanted or not I guess. Maybe someone else can help.

If there is a nav beacon, that's a good place to find Wanted pilots that you can take down. Like Mr Bridger, I'm not sure how you pick out the pirates though.

So I just chill out until one of those signal sources comes up, or do I need to fly around the star, until I get in range of one of those? How do I go about looking for one? Thanks

Just fly around a bit and wait for a USS to appear, then go towards it, drop out of supercruise when you are in range then get prepared to be killed by the pirate.

Go into super cruise and you will see round circles while flying. Target one of those and fly to it the when your hud says safe to disengage super cruise come out of super cruise and you should find some targets, or not. Look on the left hand consol and see if you can see a nav beacon , head there in SC drop out and wait scanning the ships in there to find a wanted one.
