Obsidian Ant video - ARX: Thoughts On The New Currency And What It Means

My immediate answer is 'I dunno'...but they do have games with in game monetization..personally, I don't care..if the game changes in ways I do not like, I will stop playing it...not a fan of the way Guild Wars 2 changed...for subjective reasons...so, I am just watching the same thing occur again...and waiting to see how things will work in the long term.
Unfortunately, I do care. :(

Well yeah it is a double edged sword for frontier. With the option to earn them in game, especially if theres an amount of change manipulation going on, some people will put aside the desire to get the new shiny and just wait until they get the free option. I do that for the bulk of the purchase itches i get in swtor for similar reasons.

Also the company goodwill has to be absolutely pristine for this not to collapse. If you're even remotely aware of your pet issue, the fss, frontiers communication, the ground mission reticule being bugged for 2 or 3 major patches now, whatever it may be, the free option suddenly is the only option.

Frontier aren't that smart with product offerings, just look at how bland their deluxe editions are for jwe and planet zoo, and look at what they're offering on the steam store for dlc, complete junk (there might be some 30% resentment there but its still bad showing for new players). The only way this would be received positively is if it turned out even slightly cheaper than it is now. Ie, the same price as now with some change to tempt you, not make the minimum spend $5 instead of $4. That would just be rude.

I feel lucky to be sitting here safe that i can life without cosmetics now, and im still burning off all my thankyou purchases from the past. There's only so many gold / chrome / wireframe paints you need.

So if I understand you correctly, you're paranoid about "watching the same thing occur again" without knowledge nor examples of it happening previously, yet such information is easy to obtain via Google?

"I don't like this because of some imaginary perceived slight based on my paranoid speculation" appears to be the scenario here :ROFLMAO:

Also: Arx can be earned in-game - those that actually play the game will get cosmetics for free.

Speculation: are the ones complaining about Arx (earnable non-the-less) those that don't actually play the game (therefore won't earn Arx)? Only FDev have the answer.

P.S. you still haven't answered my question:
I like this train of thought - which games changed their monetisation policies, and how, since Tencent became involved?

(I've already checked)

Custom colour interior packs for our ships may of smoothed this new ARX system in a bit... Ship hats and google eyes anyone?

Flimley

I am hoping I'll be able to set myself in-game targets to achieve by earning points for stuff in the store. I'm not a habitual cosmetics customer (I used to be Frontier, hint hint) so I don't feel I'll be affected by any lumpiness of the points packages (I just won't buy them if it isn't a sensible looking purchase), and I'm not particularly a socialiser (I play in Open but my playstyle isn't dependant on getting close enough to other players to see their livery) so this whole thing is only upside as far as I'm concerned.

Lucky me ;)

Yeah, there also often seems to be a fundamental misunderstanding about how stock market investors (such as Tencent here) “make money from their investments”.

While this is seemingly enough to justify the introduction of Arx for some (and if balanced right would be for me as well), until we know the rate at which these can be earned I'd be careful using it as a positive argument for Arx.

If the cheapest item on the store is, say, 1000 Arx, but I can only earn, say, 50 Arx a week, then (at least as far as I'm concerned) the ability to earn them in-game may as well not be there at all. Would be nice if FDev could shine some light on this sooner than later, although I guess we'll know in a couple of months at the latest.

Edit: And just to add - the fact Arx will be earnable in game does NOT justify having to pre-pay fake currencies in bundles that will not match your shopping list. I really dislike this approach and while many are used to it, for better or worse, it will likely put me off buying items from the store.

I'm in a similar position as Karrde Sun, where I already bought most items I want for my fleet, so will find it easier to keep my wallet closed if they mess this up.

I've bought plenty of bits and bobs off their website and knew exactly how much I was spending, transferring into the game is just way more convenient.

However, any time a company introduces their own scrip into a game/theme park/venue it's always to obfuscate the true cost of what you are buying. If they truly believed in the value of what they're selling they wouldn't need to do this in the first place.

I also have a really hard time believing we would earn any meaningful amount in-game otherwise why would Frontier do this? It's the old free to play strategy that relies on being opaque. Don't like it one bit.

Please for the love of god do not remove 1:1 purchases. If I have to buy a 1000ARX pack and 500ARX pack to buy something that is 1200ARX I will not be spending any more money on ship cosmetics. Give me direct purchases or give me death!
Hate to say it, but this scenario is pretty much what I'm expecting. Fdev didn't decide to go this route because they thought it would make them less money than the present system.

ANOTHER VIDEO ON THIS???

Why so much interest on this Arx stuff?

Is it a game changer? No

Does this add new gameplay? No

Does this add some new game feature? No

Is it a new game concept? No on console this already existed.

Am I excited by the fact that this is the main content for September release? Absolutely NO!

Nothing to see here

Is it a game changer? yes. I've multiples of thousands of hours in Elite across 5 accounts. I've spent literally hundreds of Euro on paint jobs and kits etc, and now, anyone can get all that just by playing, which is what I was doing.

Does it add a new game feature? yes. You can now play more and earn more arx.

Am I going to be refunded the hundreds of Euro I spent? In all fairness, with the hours I put in, I'd have earned enough Arx!

Your comment suggests that this will undermine the value of your previous purchases if it is too easy to earn the points in-game, I hadn't considered that angle as justification for keeping the in-game earnings at the lower end. I think to expect previous cosmetic purchases to somehow affect your ARX balance when they arrive is unreasonable, but I wouldn't be buying any new skins between now & implementation (if I were the type to buy any) :)

yeh me neither...

From a purely 'game play' point of view it is a great idea. IF there were no previous foundations in place. What we have is near 5 years of people paying hard cash for their paint jobs, and now Frontier want to give them away for free or, if you don't want to earn them via game time, you can still buy them with cash.

I know if that had been available, I'd not have spent a penny/cent int heir store.

Nah, we're very fond of banning from the subreddt illiterate and/or sitewide-rule-breaking fools though :ROFLMAO:

Important issues get traction on Reddit. "Bring back ADS" and "change paintjob breaks immersion" don't, such is life 🤷‍♂️

I don't think there are any important things on a gaming forum.

Fair enough that you like it.. I respect your opinion.
Still it's not a game changer as long as cosmetics do not affect the game mechanics
