Oculus coming tomorrow - what should do first?

So here I am, Oculus strapped to my meaty face. I read the instructions and tweaked the thingamajiggers and altered the whatsits from the stickied forum post. I'm sitting in my diamondback explorer out in the middle of nowhere, probably trying to smell dashboard and flick my headlights off and on again.

What is the first thing I should do that's gonna cause my pants to supercruise away from my butt?

Everything.

I especially enjoy canyon flying.

Or base assaults.

Or flying through the struts on starports.

Buy a fan and put it in front of you. You'll need it.

As above, do everything it is all vastly improved in VR. Cruise through an asteroid field and realise that those rocks are actually slowly rotating mountains.:)
If you haven't got it already I highly recommend getting Voice Attack, it makes ship control so much easier, especially in VR.

Never a truer word said. My CV1 keeps steaming up and hence loses clarity.

I'd agree with that although with the number of buttons and switches to hand on my Warthog it is not strictly needed. That being said, who wants to be having to remember which switch to press when you can simply bark the commands. Very useful in the heat of battle especially.

Ok all suggests were solid.

Just tried it and here's what I did.

*loading screen showing my DBX "man that's pretty"*

*now i'm in my cockpit seat... "oh sweet mercy"*

*looks at my feet and realizing i'm wearing stupid feet shoes*

*launches and has a moment of panic as if playing for the first time and have no idea what to do*

*hits supercruise and realizes just how soothing it is to be in a ship in supercruise*

*lands on planet and proceeds to hit jumps and boost in scarab while screaming like a girl*

One thing that's rarely mentioned..make sure you either drink from a straw or are VERY conscious of where you put any drink glasses, lol. I've done one spill on my desk and managed to salvage everything, but never again!

I got lots of lots of sealed tumblers with straws so we good. My desk is now really cluttered.

Yes, my Rift delivered a constant flow of enjoyable moments too... and your first experiences with Elite pretty much assemble mine.

Elite became a completely new game, the moment i played it in the Rift. I always wanted to be in a space adventure and i pretended to be, each time i played Elite on a monitor.
Now i launch that game, put my HMD on and i am right in the middle of the adventure. No more pretending... each landing on an alien world is awesome, each fight a tense situation.
Its even awesome, when you orbit a sun just to scoop some fuel.

VR is so great, even if the resolution is low at the moment. I can hardly go back. Simulators are VR only for me now.

[edit] and yes, i am using a covered coffee mug as well :D

Fly around an Ocellus station, in and out of the rings and in between the cooling vanes and solar panels. Realise you are a piloting GOD now ! Swoop close to the hull and -- BANG ! "Shields offline" -- ARGH forgot about the rotation. Quickly, go somewhere safer. There that moon looks good. Fly down low into that canyon. Skim the surface, gaze in awe a wonderment at the huge cliffs surrounding you. Fly into the shadow of one of the walls - BANG -- Ooops cutting it a bit fine there ! -- pull a tight turn around that bend and hit boost. Oops, miscalculated - BANG - "eject eject" -- BOOOM!

Rinse and repeat.

That's basically what I've been doing since I got mine.

That sounds great, but i'm so afraid of crashing my ship in the rift because it all seems real that I fly like an old man. I'm riskier in my SRV but I honestly treat like like an ATV and don't care so much.

VR is so great, even if the resolution is low at the moment.

I assume pilots are wearing their suites with their sealed helmets for life support, so it's easy to pretend there's some visual deterioration that naturally comes with such outfitting. Not to mention pilots are likely prone to blurry vision and other ocular issues over time. All this adds up to a way to role play away the Oculus Rift's fuzzier resolution.

The first thing you should do is WAKE UP!

Since you clearly state it isn't arriving until tomorrow you cannot possibly be sat with it strapped to your face. You are therefore dreaming.

In answer to your original question, the first thing you should do is open up the box.
