So this is a new one...

Start game through steam
Game starts
Rift is waiting for game
Game starts on monitor in 2D

This has only just started happening but reloads / reboots haven't helped.
When I go to the options menu in game I have to reset to hmd headphones.

Works just fine after that but seems to be defaulting to hmd off for some reason?

I have just downloaded new update for the Rift, could it be that?

ED launches fine for me, through Oculus Home or through the standalone launcher. Perhaps there's an issue with the Steam patch.

On Oculus Home, the game starts the launcher window, then it appears to pass on through and start the game as if you pressed on the 'Play" button.
All works fine though.

I recently had an issue where my computer booted up with an old radeon driver v16.6. It should have been v17.1.2. No idea why as it shut down normally the day before and started normally without any indication. No idea how this can happen. OR isnt supported in 16.6, so it didnt work. Took me a while to figure out and I only noticed the update notification in catalyst, checked the version and thought wt...?

Just a thought fellas - go to 'services' (it's in control panel, or just type 'services' in, next to your Start button) - look for 'oculus VR runtime service'. It should be set to run automatically, kick it if it's not running. Any help?

Same here! This behavior just started within the last couple of days. Now I have to go to settings and set the HMD when I start ED...

Service is running fine. Oculus software is starting automatically.

Works like a charm since day one. I am using the Frontier launcher (game bought at Frontier store as well). No steam connection.

To anyone having this problem, Steam recently changed how VR interacts with the Elite Launcher:

What you do to fix this issue, is now pick the "Launch Elite in SteamVR" option.

This option now detects an Oculus headset and will launch the game just as it always did **without launching steamVR**.

I do not have SteamVR installed, and the option does what the normal launch used to do.

This game with the Oculus are giving me all kinds of problems. The only thing I can get on the Oculus is an endless loading screen. I've tried loading it up in desktop mode and setting the 3D mode to HMD (Headphones), updating my .Net file, I've been told to validate the files only to have the options menu on the launch screen not work...

It works in desktop mode but it would be nice to play this in VR :/

Go to the options menu in the ED launcher menu and choose 'Graphics'
Under 3D, select the option HMD with headphones.

That tells the game to output to the VR device.

If you're talking about the main menu when initially booting up the game. I've tried that. I go to 'Options', then to 'Graphics', then I change the 3d option to HMD (Headphones) and select 'Apply'; the game screen on the monitor (client) goes black and in the Oculus after about 30 seconds of saying "Please Wait", it changes to "Sorry, Elite Dangerous: Commander Deluxe Edition is taking a while to load. If this issue persists, please take off your headset and check this app on your computer.".

I've also been told to validate the files by using the options menu on the launcher screen (the one with Buy Now offers on the right side). But the options menu doesn't work when the game isn't active. A drop down menu flashes on the screen whenever I click it but not for long enough to interact with it. If I click play and start the game up. The options menu becomes active but the validate game files entry disappears.

Maybe something to do with my graphics card settings? I don't know I'm running out of ideas and I think customer support is too... their latest suggestion was to make sure the Oculus was plugged into the right HDMI port :(
