Oculus sensor tracking and greyout flashing issues with Elite Dangerous (Oculus 1.13 & 1.14)

Same thing happened to me - you have to roll back your USB 3.0 drivers in order to have windows detect anything plugged into them.

In my case detection was not a problem. My controls were acting crazy, input lag, stuck directions etc, and I got ally crappy performance from my rift, including the greyouts. If I played in 2D, my FPS was locked on 144 (limited by g-sync). No detection would have saved me a hell lot of reinstalling, tweaking, and banging my head to the wall :D (I was considering getting a new CPU even :D)

Hey all, wanted to reply saying that the problems are back, even with hyper threading disabled on my 3770k. If I get time I'll try some stuff this weekend, maybe go back to hyper threading enabled and the affinity fix or the process priority fix or something.

It's really sad, this totally used to work great. Now it's grey flashes, micro loss of tracking, and in open mode with multiple players, outright game crashes.

I am starting to think that the problem is tied to network traffic. I tried playing on daytime and the flashes were minimal. Played zlast night and it was flash nightmare.
Pitty that neither FD or Oculus know how to tackle this problem

Have you all recently installed Win 10 creators update? I had and tried turning off game mode after seeing some discussion on the Oculus forums. I had a short test last night and didn't see any flashes or stutters. Will do a longer test tomorrow.

I don't have the Creators update installed but get the grayouts frequently and without end.

Dunno if this has been mentioned but it "fixes" the grey outs/flashes, albeit a temporary fix but has worked for me and others:

https://forum.sector3studios.com/in...vr-issue-log-included-fixed.7622/#post-114955

Indeed i tried this as i play in vr via steam so i have the file (it appeared they grey flashes were there but not as frequent )

On the other hand i was going through the device manager in windows 7 and i noticed under oculus vr devices the dk2 sensor power management option (power management tab) was ticked ie the "allow the computer to turn off the device to save power". So I unticked it

To me the grey flashes seem to be some short of a timeout issue where tracking is lost temporarily and the power management maybe it

I havent tested it in game yet but i will do and report back

I spoke too soon with my fix. Flashes back worse than ever. Support contacted, who suggest some re-installlations which have not fixed things.

ED pretty unplayable in VR right now. :-(

Also support said very few people are seeing this despite this thread?

I'll add my voice. Tried quite a few of proposed solutions (short of reinstalling everything, which i wont do), fiddling with thread affinity, hyperthreading, sleep modes, voodoo rain dance...
Fact is it's happening in Elite Dangerous and not in other games i play in VR. Also the problem appeared on latest patch 2.3.02. Before that (plain 2.3.0) i was able to play for hours without any issue.

SO I stumbled upon something that has so far been a workable solution for me!

It's so stupidly easy...

step 1: unplug HMD from inateck usb card
step 2: plug HMD into 3.0 USB mobo slot
step 3: plug sensor into inateck usb card

BOOM - no more flashies, and no more sensor errors.

I've turned hyperthreading back on, and tested for a couple hours today without any issues.

I hope this helps some of you out there who have been struggling with this.

I had to unplug my sensor from the USB 3 and plug into the USB 2 on the motherboard to get my VR working better.
Oculus HMD connected to a power USB 3 hub that is connected to the inateck card.

Seems to work well most of the time now.

Gents fyi

I did the steam trick as above by editing the vr settings file (for those who have it) and the power management in devices , and cahnged the sensor to another usb 3 port and i get no grey cutouts anylonger

I just tried the power management one on it's own and still got the grey flashes.

I've just unticked all the USB power management options and (fingers crossed) no grey flashes, I will report back if they reappear, I have removed the steamvr.vrsettings hack just to see if this is a more permanent fix.

GREAT NEWS - IT IS NOW FIXED IN Runtime 1.15 Public Test Beta!

No more flashes, grey-outs, jumps when keeping Affinity as ALL Cores on everything!

E:DD is sooooo much smoother too and slightly higher FPS. HAPPY CHAPPY ;)

WAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

They only say they added better support for 3 Sensors. Sod that! They fixed the Oculus!!!

Excellent news. I'll have to try the 1.15 beta tomorrow.

nope this did not work, the steamvr.vrsettings hack is the only way to stop the grey flashes (I await 1.15 public release!)

Sounds great...but let's wait and see for ourselves
When is stable 1.15 release due ?

The last Release was about 1 month from being Test to Release. There's no harm in using the Test and it's available in Settings on a switch.
